Ever tried sweet spaghetti... made with BANANA KETCHUP... and HOT DOGS?! This sweet spaghetti recipe, aka Filipino spaghetti, is much loved throughout the Philippines and is a famous comfort food. It's like a spaghetti and meat sauce but sweeter, due to the main component of the sauce: bananas! Yep, banana ketchup is sweet, savoury but delicious, giving serious umami vibes without a tomato in sight. Oh, and did I mention there are hot dogs in this recipe too?!

It's true that there was a shortage of tomatoes in the Philippines during WWII. It was the Filipina food technologist, MARIA OROSA, who invented ketchup made from banana as an alternative to tomatoes. Years later after experimentation of the condiment, Filipinos discovered spaghetti using banana ketchup. The sweet spaghetti was a big hit that it became a common dish in birthday parties for children. It will definitely offend many Italians, but sweet spaghetti will always be a Filipino kids' childhood magic

I love pasta and am very particular about it. But as a Filipino, whenever I eat at Jollibee's or make my own Filipino spaghetti, it feels like a temporary escape from this unjust world, not caring what someone has to say. It's like our version of that final scene in Ratatouille. Not caring about what's right and what's wrong, just pure delectable experience.

This video brought back memories of when my mom and I would buy Filipino Spaghetti kits from the grocery store and have it as an afternoon snack in my teens. My maternal grandma's secret ingredient for her spaghetti was: Reno brand Liver spread! (liver spread is like a chicken-liver pâté). Liver spread added a rich, meaty taste to her spaghetti sauce and costs less than having to buy more meat for the same effect. My mother and I use liver spread when we make Filipino spaghetti and it gets lots of compliments at parties and gatherings (even from people who aren't fans of liver spread)!

In difficult times, with no money and high inflation, filipinos still want to celebrate milestones/events in their lives. Pulling off their budget, finding cheaper ingredients to substitute , comes the birth of filipino spag. It has evolved and still evolving to remain affordable yet tasty.

Just a comment about the hotdogs. I am a Filipina and We dont usually use CANNED HOTDOGS. For one, We dont have canned hotdogs here which are locally made. We use the hotdogs in the frozen section of the grocery jist like in other countries . The hotdogs that We usually use here though are the red ones unlike the ones in the US for example where hotdogs are brown in color.

I know that everyone has a different take on Filipino spaghetti… When I make my version of this recipe, I usually don’t put banana ketchup.. I just add regular sugar or coconut sugar … Yes. Coconut sugar , not too much though. I , then add Al Dente spaghetti to the mixture of sauce and protein and toss it around .😮 I wanted to see if using this would produce a different level of taste .. It tastes great 👍🏻 A good balance of Savory and not too sweet spaghetti..

Thanks 🙏 for featuring a Filipino childhood treat :). Personally, I was never into it when I was younger. Didn't and never have the "acquired taste", Never liked it and never will. Kids, in particular, are huge fans. I remember watching a youtube vlog adding/using not only generous amount of banana ketchup but also a can of condensed milk PLUS generous amount of brown sugar.

I am a FILIPINO and i APPROVE this! Put a chopped Bell pepper, a small can of liver paste, evaporated/condensed milk and some cheeze while you simmer (thats why your Filipina taste tester said it should be melted, and this is also topped with greated cheeze by the way🤭). season it too with pepper while rendering the ground pork and also while simmerring the sauce and it will be perfect!

Your asian carbonara is amazing, Vincenzo should stop complaining and just try it. As for the Filipino spaghetti, I will try to gather the ingredients (I have no idea if there's banana ketchup available here in Brazil) and if I can find them, will DEFINITELY give it a try, because I absolutely LOVE those asian takes on italian pasta. Spaghetti Naporitan is one of my absolute favorites

You can add condensed milk maybe quarter of a can or 4 tbsp if you dont have banana ketchup will taste almost the same.

Growing up, my abuela would add Eden cheese into the sauce while boiling. It will add that creamy yet sweet flavor of Filipino spaghetti sauce. Then, top it up again with cheese.

I'll gave it an 8 out of 10 for using canned hotdog (we use TJ). Here in Mindanao (Philippines largest island) we don't use canned hotdogs. We also used an equal amount of ground pork and ground beef to gave it more flavor. No cheese toppings as we viewed it as a waste instead we melted the cheese into tha sauce (as what Wilma said).

Not necessary a canned hotdog but usually the regular red hotdogs available in the groceries and supermarket. Sometimes a can of corned beef is a substitute for ground beef or pork.

To add even more sweetness (or perhaps to throw in more vegetables), my mom likes to add chopped red and yellow bell peppers to the sauce while it is simmering down.

I clicked as soon as I saw Filipino Spaghetti on the title. Consider me pinoy baited but I like it. The red hotdogs would’ve been better but any hotdog would do. The minced pork could also be simmered in pineapple juice to add some more sweetness to it. It looks yummy 😋 great job! Thanks for this!!

What some of us do is either add sugar and evaporated milk or just condensed milk to give it that sweetness and creaminess. And even add cream cheese to the sauce.

I don't think we use Canned Hotdogs for our spaghetti here in the Philippines. I think it's not even sold here. Though we use hotdogs but not those ones. Our hotdogs here are colored red.

I'm a 50 year old Filipino and My grandmother always made Filipino Spaghetti when i was a kid. She always used Banana Ketchup for her Filipino Spag for every ocassion. I remeber I'd taste the hot dogs first before mixing it with the sauce. The Filipino Spaghetti was originally made as kiddie meal for chiledren's birthday parties.
