6 years ago I watched this video not knowing an ounce on painting. I remember how excited i was learning this technique and how hard it was for me to do it. I still have the painting where I did these flowers based on this video. Here I am now, painting with my mind. This video brings me back to when i was a teen, so i decided to do them again and go back on your video like old times. Thank you dear Marjorie.

Hello, Thanks for your comment. I'm self taught too and painted furniture commercially for years. The method I figured out allows me to freehand roses quickly. Before that, I was painting the front first had an awful time shading and highlighting. My You Tube Video just shows most of my method but it's really pretty fast. Glad it helps. Good luck painting, Marjorie

I also like how complete your presentation is, including the image of the brushes made the process of getting started less intimidating. A (or rather THE) stroke of genius: A nifty technique I would perhaps most expect from folk art. Very inspiring. Thank you kindly! I took your terms for the brush rather literally and am now paining a mural with my feet. I drench thick old woolen socks in the basic color, the heel in darker color, the toes in lighter shades. fine results and it goes in a jiffy. (Also the best leg exercise I have done in a long while.)

@moonshinetears . Hello, thinks for your comment. An angular shader is a huge help with this method. The strokes are made by putting pressure on the brush to make it flare out (like rose petals). I don't twist the brush to make the strokes, I press down on the brush and make the point flare out. You could use a regular shader but the petals will be formed differently, without the longer bristles to flare out. Hope this helps.

Hello Jenny, Thanks for your compliment about my painting. About the brushes....I have painted professionally for about 20 years and if I could save money on brushes I would love to. I shopped around before I found the right ones for my style of roses. They have to be very flexible and also firm enough to carry the load of paint. Cheaper brushes are either too stiff to make the turns or too floppy to hold up under the paint. If I could use $7 brushes it would make me very happy.

Late 80’s I bought the folk art 1 step painting cards that had step by step instructions with colors used, brush types and the cards were laminated so you could paint on them and practice and clean them off. They were standard size of a sheet of paper but very durable. They were much more affordable back then as that was still a time when women were homemakers and took care of the children. Such supplies today are so expensive with rampant inflation that continues to rise. I do feel fortunate that I learned this back then and have been fortunate enough to play around with many products as my husband was an auto body sales paint representative. And some of their monochromatic paints that are the size of a baby food jar would cost you $750. My husband is not a painter and has no interest. I was a commercial painter, got burned out and started doing wall murals and it does come in streaks for me. My best work is when I’m playing. When it feels like it’s a chore under someone else’s expectations it’s just not the same. Now I paint as an outlet for the crazy times we are in but I don’t have the perks of the supplies anymore since my husband retired and I no longer do commercial painting.
