Mark Bell's Power Project

Dr. Benjamin Bikman is an associate professor at BYU who’s research focuses on the role of ketones and insulin in the body and their effect on metabolic disorders such as obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and dementia. Dr. Bikman has a PhD in Bioenergetics as well as a postdoctoral fellowship with the Duke-National University of Singapore in metabolic disorders. His lab, The Laboratory of Obesity and Metabolism has two primary focuses: Identify the molecular mechanisms that explain the increased risk of disease that accompanies weight gain, with particular emphasis on the etiology of insulin resistance and disrupted mitochondrial function, and reveal novel cellular processes that are responsible for fat development and accrual, with a particular emphasis on white/brown fat and the contrasting effects of insulin and ketones.

In Oct. 2019 I was nearly 250 lbs. and felt terrible. I had brain fog every morning, no energy, and sat in front of a computer all day at work so just didn't move much at all. I started listening to Ben Bikman and implementing a low carb high fat diet. I started walking on a treadmill 20, then 30, then 45 mins per day. In Feb. 2020 I broke the 200 lb. mark and decided to pick up the intensity. I started running in March and signed up for a half marathon in June. I ran the half marathon in July in roughly 2 hours 15 mins. At that point I was about 175 lbs., but my body was changing a lot. I then decided to try doing a triathlon, so I signed up to an Olympic distance triathlon and started swimming and biking. I did my tri in Oct. 2020 one year after I started my journey. I am currently 165 lbs. and will be doing an IM70.3 in Monterrey, Mexico in April 2021. Is it easy? No, especially not at the beginning. Is feeling the way I feel and having the energy I have better than pasta (spaghetti is my favorite food)? Emphatically YES! Today taking a few days off from training for my body to recuperate is harder than training. If you're the guy I was, I would highly recommend looking into more of Mark Bell's content and also look up Ben Bikman, he's all over KZbin. Thanks for getting this interview lined up, guys.

It was insightful hearing him back up some of his personal opinions with his core family values, all while sticking to the science. Keep up the great work with this podcast guys, really great stuff!

Great info, and what a great speaker! Some of this info seems to contradict Stan Efferding’s vertical diet recommendations, with the multiple meals that include white rice all day long - it seems like this would risk developing insulin resistance. I’d be curious to know if vertical dieting is dangerous for insulin sensitivity. And I’m also curious of what the nuances are for cases where the vertical diet is just fine and why. Should we limit carbs until we’re down to 10% BF and then gradually ramp up white rice as needed? Or is the vertical diet just inherently dangerous and just a risk one would accept in the pursuit of performance? I’d love to be a fly on the wall for a discussion about this between Bikman, Peterson, Efferding, and Israetel.

Wasnt there a study that showed that a steak raised more insulin than oat meal? Mike Dolce brought that up in hes videos. So the morning routine of only fats and protein in the morning is useless for keeping insulin down...
@sarahzastrow1616
@sarahzastrow1616 2 жыл бұрын
That's not what the study showed. They didn't compare absolute amount of insulin produced in each food, rather, they compared types of foods. Unfortunately the "protein" type list included BAKED BEANS which are loaded with sugar. If you compare the absolute insulin produced from 1000kj servings of steak vs oats, you'll see steak is FAAAAR lower than oatmeal. Hope that helps!

Isn't it a lot more rare for your body to use fructose to turn into glycogen to place in muscles than carbs from oats, less processed breads and even dextrose? I heard fructose just gets stored in your liver and your body won't use it to fill muscles.

I know he does it for ethical reasons and takes supplements, but Jon Venus is pretty jacked for a vegan. I guess supplementing is essential in that case regarding anti-nutrients in plants. As far as fat and carbs, nuts would be coming from nature. But I guess in the animal realm, it would be the dairy.
@sarahzastrow1616
@sarahzastrow1616 2 жыл бұрын
Nuts are a fat source with 50g fat, 21g protein, 21.5g carbs, and 12g fiber. 50g x 9 cals per gram of fat is 450cal, 21g x 4 cals per gram or protein is 84, 21.5g x 4 cals per gram of carbs is 86 cals (although you could subtract just over 1/4 of cals to account for the fiber) Nuts are undoubtedly a fat source.. And he touched on how milk is the exception in nature. Babies need to grow fast and milk is the perfect source to give them the energy they need to rapidly grow..

@Mark Smelly Bell @Mark Bell's Power Project I wonder with Covid though, we know fat cells don't disappear when someone loses weight, so with someone who was obese but loses fat mass and still has all those same fat cells, are they still better-positioned to tolerate a viral infection? 🤷‍♀️ As far as becoming glucose intolerant, long-term carnivores like Kelly Hogan and Dr. Lisa Wiedeman don't have a reason to add carbs back in. I guess it depends on how someone plans on eating long-term.

Just thinking - our ancestors were going after meat by hunting, but they would probably graze some berries or anything they find before that meat gets in the cave and into the fire. So the most logical path during the day would be carb carb carb - protein - sleep. I mean it is not a rocket science.

Ben is an interesting case of the dichotomous cognitive nature of human beings. On the one hand he's vigorously science- and evidence-based, a high-caliber researcher making important discoveries and contributions in the field. On the other hand, someone who believes in completely made-up inane fairy tales. How does cognitive dissonance not get the better of him (actively went against food dogma but credulously accepts religious dogma)? How does he reconcile the two? And “faith“ is simply a non-answer, an excuse for not having a valid reason. What can't one believe with faith? It is not a reliable path to truth and is the polar opposite to science.
