Doug brignole is the man with the most and above all the RIGHT knowledge about which exercises to do for which muscle group. Doug has 40 years of weight training experience and is a scholar in human body biomechanics. It's ridiculous when you see most fitness youtube channels doing exercises for muscle groups they think they are training, but reality is usually different. If you want to finally make some progress after all these years of training, follow Doug Brignole for a while and you know that you were actually training wrong (wrong exercises) all these years. Doug talks about bodybuilding, so exercise with the goal of growing the muscles as much as possible.

Yes! About time Doug got on one of the bigger platforms. Huge fan of Doug. This will rub the ‘Bros’ a bit, but listen with a open mind, this information is not revolutionary but just common sense. Hope Doug continues to get more exposure. Great podcast gentleman I have not tuned in a while but when I saw this , clicked play instantly. I’ve adapted several of Doug’s recommendations about 2 years ago. Biggest changes I made was reduced or removed barbell work (Squats,OH press and Bench press) and replaced or do more sets of other exercise like leg ext for quads and curls for hams and laterals for delts. For chest I totally fell in love with cable presses standing or seated but with the cable’s set in the right path not starting overhead like traditional crossovers. Lat pull ins both vertical and horizontal have been incorporated. Great stuff. No more shoulder pain and back stiffness. I am still looking great. I have great legs and when people are like you must squat a lot , I am like nope, leg ext and curls primarily. I was doing those all the time even before Doug’s methods, so when I read his book I was like , well I have already been doing that for legs and it’s been working for me for a while. When I would squat, it would literally be last exercise with just a plate for like 3 sets of 15-20 reps just to do them.

You definitely should have him on again, and also talk about his Rep ranges and Diet, because it's interesting when he was younger and competing he touched on the fact that he had a great Zane like Physique training like everybody else at the time, 20 sets per body part, 10 to 12 reps etc, But several years ago with the focus on one exercise per body part he got into very high reps per exercise and adding more weight each set dropping down each set. And actually, i thought the reason you were having him on the show was going to be about talking about diet since he had been a High Carb Low Fat follower for years and years until something like 4 years ago, and he had a bad Doctors's exam regarding plaque, and he switched to a Higher Fat moderate protein and lower to moderate carb diet. Great and informative. Thinking I had to do compound exercises has kept me from weight training. I was afraid of injury or just not being capable enough. Doug's perspective gives me hope I can go into the gym and get stronger/bigger.

Unless your are severely limited in some way, this sounds like self limiting dialogue more than "truth." Barbells are infinitely loadable, and the same movement patterns can be accomplished with a 1 lb broomstick, or without any resistance, or even with external assistance strategies. I'm not picking on you, I'm just encouraging you to review that inner dialogue to determine if it is really true or if you have put artificial roadblocks in your path to success. Some people might have to do airsquats first. Or hold on to a cable lat bar to make that air squat even lighter, or even do some kind of machine that takes even your body weight off entirely. You just have to start somewhere, and don't put such limits on yourself before you even begin! Most importantly--get started.

WORDS OF WISDOM
@totlguy3 жыл бұрын
@@chosento2988 Thanks. I hope Mr. Good received my message in the spirit that it was intended. With so many folks the biggest problem is they impose these artificial limitations on themselves out of fear of some perceived catastrophe, or maybe more importantly, out of fear of success. Sometimes our entities are "comfortable" and invested who we are with these limitations and the uncertainty of regaining control of your health and physical capability causes more anxiety.

We really need a lifting template based on Doug’s info. I’m currently nursing a fucked up knee and sore lower back from my last deadlift session. Pretty intrigued by this info.

I did 15 x 5 or so sets of 225 incline barbell benches over 2 years ago and my shoulders have been injured since!

Doug's info has been very helpful. Another individual who brought sanity and myth busting to "lifting" decades ago was Arthur Jones, an even more "unconventional" breath of fresh air for the industry.

Makes sense. I never get a pump in my quads from squats. Soreness in hams glutes and sometimes quads, but I need too low of weight for too high of reps to challenge my quads only. Not like the crazy burn and pump I get from leg extensions

I stopped all barbell training and only train Armwrestling movements for almost 6 months. Life is easier now.

I must have a similar metabolism to this guest. I got my leanest spending most of my time sitting around playing video games with lifting as my only exercise. I do love outdoors cardio though, mainly because it just feels great to get outside.

How many grams of carbs were you eating when you did this?
@MeganBennettBurks3 жыл бұрын
@@varunkamal91 I was experimenting with a version of what sometimes gets called the anabolic diet at that point. So virtually none most days (did strict carnivore on low carb days) and a ton on the weekends (I can't recall exact number but definitely pretty standard American diet levels). Interestingly I find it easier to bulk just doing strict no carb. But really it isn't impossible for me to gain or lose regardless of diet. Just a matter of ease and some other factors.

Wow I may be late to the party! But finally someone that makes sense and knows is biomechanics!! Bravo for bringing him on. As a woman I am being told I need to do all the compound lifts (which I enjoy ie deadlifts) but they don't make that much sense when you understand biomechanics.

wonderful! And I have the book.. my only critique is that many of those exercises depend on a dual cable freemotiion machine.. need more options for people who onlybhave access barbells or dumbbells

Good interview. As with others, I was reminded of seeing Doug B on Ric's Corner. And then there was the "How much can you bench?" comment regarding flawed takes on strength and that took me back to 1985.

Very interesting, Doug Brignole makes a lot of sense ..... just as Arthur Jones did in the seventies. However Bench press still makes my pecs sore , high bar squats make my quads sore, and close grip pull downs make my lats sore. Perhaps the answer lies somewhere in the middle
@FlowStateFitness3 жыл бұрын
Following Doug for years. Think he’s spot on 95% of the time but he underestimates the value of peak voluntary contraction vs average voluntary contraction. All his leverage and biomechanics talk is about keeping more continuous tension but there are certain movements that lend themselves to a higher peak contraction with less mean voluntary contraction

So does he have a training program I can purchse? I have a lower back injury that get aggrivated wehn I deadlift so I like the concept of no barbells.
