Drummer and composer Mark Guiliana (David Bowie, Brad Mehldau, Meshell Ndegeocello) walks us through a some tips and tricks for emulating drum samples with an acoustic kit and a few toys in a drum lesson with live-band examples featuring bassist Jonathan Maron. From preparing the snare drum with a cymbal to deadening a floor tom with a secondary head and stacking cymbals on top of each other, these are just a few ideas to help inspire you to find new sounds from your old kit.

From Brian Eno: “Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.”

Not so sure that really came close to an "electronic drum sound," but the sound changes definitely sound good. If you want an electronic drum sound I highly recommend using guitar and/or bass effects pedals connected to mics. I first saw Tony Hajjar of At The Drive-In/Sparta fame do this and the sounds you can get are killer. I also believe Steward Copeland of The Police used them as well.

You are my new drum-hero mark! Just watched your Drumeo lesson here and Drumeo has had a fair share of improv lessons but maybe not what I always would call pure improv, yours was pure free jazz improv, it may be that because I’m new to drums , improv and your take on improv attracts me because of your everything is music philosophy, I’m good at rhythms and detecting and dissecting a drum part in a song but because of some birth defects my coordination sucks so like now I have a dd65 kit and i use it with superior drummer, I’m more comfortable assigning the kick to one of the drum pads than to a pedal and even then my reaction is often too late so I love people like you who much like me sit behind my iPad finger drumming or now my dd65 drumming and just hit stuff, not thinking too much about bpms and written patterns, just exploring, cause everyone including me can hit stuff, I’m just not too good at hitting multiple things at the same time and making it sound rhythmically, you’re an inspiration for me and for people like me who loves the drums but are maybe not great at keeping the tempo or patterns in a song cause our legs and arms it not talking together 🙈looking forward to exploring you and your music and musical philosophy more mark!

+Nicolas Zart give an hear to Amon Tobin's album Bricolage. I think that was the first decent bridge between advanced electronic music and real jazz culture (it's an old album seen from now but still). I think it's exactly this context that brought the new generation of drummers where they are..; Electronic music and its own sickness, plus their advanced (jazz) drumming technics = bam!

Not what I expected but that's good too. When miking the bass, run one mic into a sub woofer. If can be from a home stereo from a thrift store with an RCA in, just get a dynamic mic and some cable adapters. Make sure you wear earplugs because those deep sonic waves hurt long after you finish recording. Run a snare mic through an amp with reverb and some distortion. Both of these can be miked at the amp, or just left in the room for the room mics. If you're putting tape on your heads, try insulation foam tape from the hard wear store. Also, around Halloween, you can get 'Moon Gel' like window decorations. However, if you leave it on too long, it will stain the heads, but so what. Lots of skulls and spiders. Guitar pedals also can be fun. Again, get a dynamic mic and XLR to unbalanced 1/4" cables. I found a good deal on a used DBX subharmonic synthesizer. Not as powerful as I had hoped, but it does alter the sound into a digital medium. Any analog outboard gear hard wear is gonna have a unique effect. I have the Moog 500 series Ladder and Delay. Also a spring reverb unit, compressors, & gates. The 500 series units are a lot of fun. Many are affordable, especially if you build the gear yourself from kits, and you can add even harmonic distortion to give your kits a nice sizzle quality.
