Awesome tutorial. One of my favourite bass lines, really funky and percussive. You demo'd the use of the left hand so well I think I have almost got it! Thank you :-)

+scaz38 Nice one, I'm actually starting to bore myself with how much I bang on about the left hand hit. It's good to hear that the information is coming through and I'm helping!!!!

Big time.. It's such an integral part of this percussive playing style. Keep them coming, your lesson really have helped me.

+Cambridge Bass Lessons the left hand slap comes to some and others with more difficulty. i appreciate it. thank you. Mark King is so much about stamina once you get his stuff down.

I agree with Paul Sav below. Your videos are quite good and useful. However, the very first time I watched your videos, It struck me that you should play the line in question at full speed on the first few times through to set up context and then play it super slow to give the particulars. Keep it up, sir.

Manik have you ever done a tutorial on the song "Watching You" by Slave? One my favorite bass grooves that I've struggled with. I would be your number one fan if you could break this down and do a lesson for me. I'm a self taught intermediate player in a cover band- the least experienced but hardest working! Mastering this song would bring me/my confidence to another level. Thanks for even reading this message. I'll be following along all year.

I haven't got time at the moment but will have a look in the future. Is there any part in particular that you want to learn? I listened to the track and it has a lot of different parts!! That makes making a tutorial harder as it takes more time to explain!!

Cambridge Bass Lessons No rush. I've searched high and low and can't find anyone who has yet to approach it. I'm a beginning/intermediate bass player and I'm struggling with it all. Whenever you get to it is fine. Your style of teaching makes it easier. Willing to pay if necessary. Thanks for the response. Doc

Great tutorial thank you! Have you thought of doing one on Micro Kid? There's some fills in there that are baffling and sound so unique! Cheers, John

Sure thing John. Which fills do you mean?
@johnhufton57877 жыл бұрын
Cambridge Bass Lessons Its the sixteenth fill between 2nd verse and bridge on the Standing in the Light album version. Having said that, the bass in the whole track is phenomenal!

i think you should always start yr vids with the bassline at full speed! thks paul

I agree. At speed then slow down then speed up and play at speed again.

10:03 scary Ron Manual type stare 😨.....but seriously.... great tutorial, first time I've seen you. Been a Level 42 fan since I was about 13/14 1982/3 and just building up my you tube collection on them. How& Why did you start bass. I have an old westone bass, what gauge strings would you recommend for it, and is it futile to attempt this style of playing on my machine?
@cambridgebasslessons8 жыл бұрын
Hey Manik, I use 40 60 80 100 gauge strings. You can play this style on any bass just as long as the action isn't too high. I started playing bass because my friend was a drummer and suggested I played bass in his punk band. I bought the bass and he kicked me out of the band so I decided to get lessons and the rest is history!! Cheers, Davey

Hi, are you going from the studio version or the live version? on the studio I'm pretty sure it's pinched false harmonics for the intro, that's how I've always heard it and played it..
@cambridgebasslessons8 жыл бұрын
+alexcar66 I was asked to do a tutorial of the way I played it on another video, I know it's not exactly the same as MK's version, you're right about the false harmonics!! Cheers, Davey

Davey is your action on the MM fairly high for the Mark King slapping?
@cambridgebasslessons2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian, Slapping is always easier with a lower action. I have it as low as it can possibly be without any fret buzz

What gauge strings do you use Davey?
@cambridgebasslessons7 жыл бұрын
Depends on the style of music Kevin. If I only had one bass I would use 40 60 80 100. Since I have a few basses I'll always have one with 35's. The super light 30's are good fun and great for string bending but harder to come by (Amazon) . I was recently in Australia and had trouble finding anything under 45. I'm not that keen on those unless I'm playing reggae bass.
@kevinlynch22487 жыл бұрын
Cambridge Bass Lessons I also use a couple of different gauges: I have 40 60 80 100 on one Jazz Bass & on the other two Fender Jazz's I have 35 55 70 90 & I prefer those. I used 30 50 70 90 for years & then switched to the slightly heavier 35 55 on the recommendation of a friend.
