I have to say, get a bass, all of Level 42's albums, maybe some other bands (Primus, for example if you like slap bass), and just play. Some people might benefit from these videos, but from my 30 years of playing, just play the f'ing bass. If it's not for you, try harder or try something else. It's a big fret or fretless board (which makes no difference). Just play it and listen to your favourite bassists.

Why didn't you do this lesson using the JayDee bass you have leaning against the wall?
@cambridgebasslessons7 жыл бұрын
I only use the 5 string when I need to go lower than E. Thanks for watching : )
@LostInFunk7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. I have since watched a few of your other lessons(all excellent BTW so thanks) and have seen the tasty looking 4 string JayDee you own.

can you do the left hand mute thing on a 5 string bass it would help me so much because i found some difficulty on doing it on a 5 string bass
@cambridgebasslessons8 жыл бұрын
Yes you can Matteo, the neck is a lot wider so you don't have to hit the bottom B with your left hand hit. My preference is to use a 4 string for slap bass, players like Mark King, Stanley Clarke, Victor Wooton, Marcus Miller do most of their slapping on 4 string basses. Have you tried the same technique on a 4 string?
@matteomarasco86558 жыл бұрын
+Cambridge Bass Lessons the fact is that i fon t have a really good 4 string bass so i m playing mostly my 5 string. thanks for the answer :)

unfortunately I can't play this on my cheap bass... the distance between E string and 12th fret is around 6mm...
@cambridgebasslessons7 жыл бұрын
If you can't lower the action (any more) try super light strings by Rotosound. Might help
@cryoshock81377 жыл бұрын
thank you very much for your advice. i will try it out. :)

If the bridge can't be lowered enough you have to "shim" the neck ie unscrew it and insert a small amount of material sufficient to lean it back away from the body

i do not like the way that jaydee is leaning against that wall. if your gonna go the extent of ordering then waiting for it to be maid, at a not at all reasonable price, the lest you could do is buy a decent stand. the way it is now the neck is taking all the strain and it could bend in time or fall diagonally in ths side
@cambridgebasslessons6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for being so concerned about the Jaydee Calibas. It's actually on a stand and not leant against the wall, it does look that way though. Are you a member of the RSPJ ? Royal Society for the protection of Jaydees : ) I know acquiring a Jaydee these days isn't easy. I've had that one since 1989. I should play it more!! Cheers, Davey
