That's one of the things that I love about him, telling these stories. Like his "Sailing to Philadelphia"! Tells a true story about US history that l never heard! He taught journalism before he had success with his music, and that maybe explains why his songs tell us our stories. "Brothers ln Arms" is about the Falklands 'war'.

As a former French officer that got bitter about his government's policies, this song has always been talking directly to my feelings. It captures the horrors of war, the glory of the battles and the bitterness that this combination leads to. Soldiers some time realize that there's something fundamentally wicked in training so hard in discipline, honor, tradition, service and sacrifice to put what we are at the service of people who are the opposite of these values. Thanks Mark Knopfler for, in two words, underlying the beauty of France "the flower of the Aquitaine", the region I lived most of my life. If we should change our national anthem, I believe "Done with Bonaparte" should be candidate, as a warning to all politicians, gurus, clergymen or any other kind of power thirsty tyrants that we are done with them.

How cool that Mark writes a song that is an Anti-War song about soldiers who suffeed about 200 years ago under Napoleon Bonaparte. Yes , the "Little Big Man" committed horrors , as many other people with the sin of pride , but he is also the man who brought out his nation of the misery , straightened France as no one had ever done before by giving it laws that are still applied in all constitutions around the world.
