So great to see people who recognize the genius that Mark Knopfler is.

Let's give some credit to the amazing Emmy Lou Harris for joining Mark on this song, album and the World Tour. She is a superstar in her own right!

This was probably the best song in a concert that was full of "best" songs. I remember just sitting open-mouthed as it came to an end. With Emmmylou Harris there, the blend of voices is nothing short of spectacular. There are so many good songs from this recording, but this - for me, at least - is far and away the best. It's musicianship, composing, lyric writing, and stage presence at its finest. And that's a difficult thing to say about a concert that was full of absolutely first-class music. I have no words to say just how hard this piece hits - I can't even say exactly why. Perhaps, having been a "journeyman" professional musician myself, I know that occasionally - even with very good artists - there are moments when everything comes together perfectly. For me, ,this song is one of those times. I've heard it played in other concerts, other venues, with many of the same musicians. But this performance just stands out above all the rest. Thank you.

We named our youngest daughter after Emilou Harris. We were moving to New Orleans when I got out of the US Navy and we wanted something for her that "Sounded French," so we named her Emily Louise and call her Emilou. (She just blessed us with twin grandsons!) Listen to her sing "Evangeline" with The Band on their "Last Waltz." That was when we really fell in love with her!

Emmylou is right up there with Dolly and Linda. This song details an entire season of Indycar racing, and your video wonderfully shows the magical effect of grooving to Mark Knopfler's music. Peace.

Can I recommend "This Is Us" from the same concert/album? It's Mark and Emmylou playing the roles of a married couple reminiscing about joys they've experienced as they look back through an old photo album. As a couple yourselves I think you'll enjoy it.

Heard this live so many times including on that Emmylou tour. It’s my favourite Mark solo track. The story in the words then the winning race in the solo. Beyond epic!

Great reaction to another one of my many favorites from Mark...and this whole album that he and Emmy Lou did together is fantastic! Yes it is the story of someone's season of racing all around the the US as many race tracks are mentioned. I liked your comment again about Mark's voice. He never liked his own voice and it has always felt to me that he is a 'reluctant' singer, ironic as his voice has such a warmth and richness to it that people love it! Do make it a priority to visit the US sometime, and spend a couple of months driving all over the nation, especially the vastness of the American West! Cheers!

Not sure if anyone else has told you this but Mark is actually left handed He played a right handed guitar because that’s was what his Dad bought him Bloke is a legend Try to find his song called Big River , he performs it with an actor/ singer called Jimmy Nail , the song is about the River Tyne from their youth , as an exiled Geordie about the same age as the two of them I nearly cried the first time I heard it 👍👍

Get to the USA it’s such a beautiful country! Especially the small towns and biggest cities! I’ve been to many and can never get enough!👌🏻🤘🏻 great songs can do that to you!💨 great voices and guitar but what changes this song and gives it that American feel is when that fiddle kicks in!

Mark was inspired to write this song by his good friend, Stefan Johansson’s Formula 1 Racing battles. I understand that Mark is a big fan of car racing. If you listen to many of Mark’s songs his voice also creates an emotional connection to his lyrics. Also, please check out Hill Farmer’s Blues Live at Cordoba. I❤MK

The song is actually based on the 1994 CART racing season. The circuit changed the sequence of races every year and the only year that went from Phoenix to Monterrey in the order described in the song was 1994. CART did the Indy 500 until 1996. There were no reported serious injuries in the 9 crashes during 1994 Indy race, but in 1995 Stan Fox was critically injured. Knopfler got much of his background information from Swedish racer Stefan Johansson who ran the CART circuit from 1992 until it folded in 2003. Johansson had a successful CART racing career even though he never won a race. I agree the song has allegorical implications, as do many other Knopfler songs.
