About 5 more weeks and then I'm leaving, we lost the battle against cancer. This song will accompany me on my journey. I met my wife at a Mark Knopfler concert and this was the song that was played during our wedding, now it will accompany me on my final journey.

When time comes around and you know the ending something can be said for this as long as personal pain and suffering for all is tolerable it aids acceptance but never closure as a good life lives on with your loved ones this I believe is heaven The private space you have in the minds of loved ones. What more can we ask on our journey. Peace to you.

A twelve year old boy was playing this outside Newcastle United’s football ground just over a week ago, Mark Knopfler saw a video of the lad and sent him a signed vinyl copy of the song wishing him all the best and told him to keep at it. What a down to earth legend.

@@michael5089 Oh damn that looks terrible 😦 Apologies all, I'm so sorry. Can't say for sure as this was a big night for me 🍻🍹& lots of great music. Have a fair idea though as 2nd time re random comment, last time it was stupid fat possum 😂 Appears I have left ones device on the bed late one night after a few drinks, music & falling asleep. Probably not waking to ones child in the room beside me who has likely come into my bed after waking to the 2 brat white dogs who live at the house behind us that bark, yap & howl all night if left out especially if there's lots of possums around on our shared fence. "Stupid fat possum" jumped on our roof near her room one night & was quite loud = the 1st comment/time I looked like I left a weird comment & hopefully this is the last. I was listening to this earlier & she must have been angry at the dogs for waking her up & found I'd left this beside me & wanted to tell you all about them. I'm so sorry & will delete the comment. Thought the OP's comment was awesome. Kudos to Mark, the young talented dude & whoever introduced this brilliant song to him, great taste. Btw not a dog hater, got a Border Collie x Kelpie - much cooler & quieter dog though 😂 Honestly these dogs are so annoying but sadly owners are worse & wont change. I'll just try to remember to stash my device better on nights like this lol gotta laugh if you knew the madness here some nights with this - close to emergency services & frequent sirens & their dogs are the kind who bark & wail to sirens, good times but at least this was a good night for me 😉😁

I watched this about a million times and 3 things are burnt into my mind during this masterpiece : 1) The lead violin...her gentle smile at 2:05. 2) At the end ....freeze at 4:47 and 4:48 and see the adulation on the cellist's face as she looks at Mark plucking the final flamboyant D note on the top E string ....and 3 ) The quiet smile between Mark and the drums says it all.... Incomparable genius !!!

Many years ago, in the distant days of Blockbuster, I rented "Local Hero" to watch with my mother. She was dying, a long and terrible death. I'd seen the movie before, remembered it fondly, and figured it could lift both our moods. It succeeded beyond anything I'd hoped. At the end, we both were crying while smiling as Knopfler played this tune into the credits. My mother and I hardly ever agreed on anything -- taste, politics, life choices -- but we agreed the movie was wonderful, magical, enchanting. She died a few weeks later. I tried watching the movie again some years ago, but it just didn't feel right. I couldn't make it to the ending. But I listen to the "Going Home" theme fairly often. It always brings a smile to my face. And some tears.

I've always liked Dire Straits, never been a massive fan. Though, I do have Brothers in Arms on vinyl. Yes bought in the 80's. I've also had a guitar since the mid 80's but never took it seriously. Now I'm retired I decided to get the old acoustic out of mothballs. lo and behold it still sounds tuneful. But I was still pretty crap at it. Only the odd riff. But at the start of the pandemic I set myself a goal, (as I wasn't going to spend much of my retirement out and about}, to learn to play properly. So I bought some kindle books on chords and other guitar magic and set about my task. Whilst checking out the guitar teachers on KZbin ( which may I say has helped tremendously ) I came across this video of Mark Live in London playing Going Home. That was it I was hooked. I can play it pretty much all the way through now, with the occasional (fingers crossed) incorrect note. At the beginning of the pandemic I set my target and my reward would be a new guitar, as the old one I've had since the 80's which was given to me by a neighbour. That new guitar is now wrapped up under the xmas tree and I can't wait to break it out and practice Going Home on it. So thank you Mark Knopfler for giving me the inspiration to keep going though out this dreadful year. A merry Christmas to everyone and hopefully a better new year.

Great read Dave. A few years ago I was delving around in KZbin looking for a song. I stumbled across a Mark Knopfler interview where he spoke about his guitars and how hard it is to be a good guitarist. From that moment I bought a guitar and started the long road to being competent. I go back to that interview quite regularly as it reminds me about where it all started, for me🎸

You said it! We take our hats off when we go into a church, out of respect for God. The Holy Spirit is the inspirer of music that transcends simple definitions like happy or sad. Mark has been blessed in this way several times ("The Walk of Life" is another DEEPLY spiritual song) I believe we have a chance of hearing such things when we finally "go home"... That's the message through music that helps us SEE

@@sidpheasant7585 No. This is delusional religion. There is no such thing. The Devine thing is earth’s energy, it’s all around us and we can sense it, understand it and use it like Mark Knopfler. But no, instead you people worship something fictional. That’s just really sad in my opinion.
@sidpheasant7585
@sidpheasant7585 Жыл бұрын
@@wolfdog7265 Nice that you are sad for me on Good Friday. I appreciate it. However, it's always a bit bizzare to me that you critics love words like "worship" and "religion" - you all insist on emphasising the ritual(ised) aspects. I used neither of those words in my post, and as we know Jesus was firmly against over-ritualised worship; and He also emphasised that the Paraclete/Holy Spirit was like the wind blowing where it will! Of course that does not mean random - far from it, but it does mean a beautifiul, free, active, innovative process that is full of surprises. Nothing dull about it wahtever! Admittedly I did refer to a church, but only because you said "hats off". Otherwise (and quite rightly) my emphasis was on the Holy Spirit and on seeing. And of course what is involved there is energy (as was the case when I experienced a Born Again event - that was entirely tangible). You call it divine (agreed), but then somehow limit it to planet Earth (which I disagree with). But there is indeed something all around us and we can indeed sense it. It happened to me as I say, but the experience ENTIRELY complied with what The Bible suggests, which is why I bring Father and Son and Holy Spirit into it. But it may well still be that what you are talking about is actually - more or less - what I am talking about. Neither Jesus nor the Holy Spirit are fictional, and the Holy Spirit is in fact highly active in our world - the core point being that through Him we have truth and love, and things add up and have meaning. And again that is basically what you wrote!

Mark Knopfler is a guitar genius with his “finger Pick” style, the pianist is very good, also the drummer who is missing a tooth, but is brilliant, the girls with the violins and viola accompany very well.

I'm still so touched by this song, man I love the versions on A Night In London. Probably Knopfler is going to remain my favourite guitarist of all time. Played this song at my grandfather's funeral on my new Strat which my friends had gotten me for my 30th birthday. And I love how it makes people feel genuine emotion, just look at all the people here in the comments talk about their loved ones. What a legend.

It is Gorgeous, and the first piece I practiced playing to get my fingers working again after my hands were injured, I got singed quite a bit. God bless you Mark. Keep playing and smiling. To some, even myself it seems like it was the dark ages when one could take a train to NYC and go to the Village and see Dylan and The Dead before they were very popular. I have been lucky enough to have seen my first concert at 12 years old. That was Buddy Holey at the Augural Ballroom in Providence R.I in 1958. I put another one in my bucket list by seeing one of Mark's first US appearances and The Shaboo Inn in Ct. I have been lucky enough to have seen him in several incarnations for 8 times. He still remains my favorite performers. I wish you all luck in achieving your music journer. However you will have to pay more than a 5 spot!

When I was young in the Navy in the early 80s we were at sea and on repeat was Dire Straits on the ship radio. At the time I thought ‘not again’ but when you have been through various conflicts over the years, songs resonate. I was always happy to be going home to see my folks and ‘come back to earth.’ Songs like this and ‘Brothers in arms’ represent that era and are emotional for some of us.
