I believe Bob and Alf Pearson recorded it first in 1931 way, way before Ella did in 1958. So did The Rhythmic 8 also in 1931. Ella's version is beautiful though.

you have to give respect to a man that survived the scene and has such a massive body of work. I guess I respect him like a fisherman that has made it out and back for 35 years. Sure, he's got some fouled lines and may have had some engine troubles, but god damn it he can sing you a story that will make you shut up and listen. He is a wonderful and talented singer, but, I think he is more of a story teller. I admire both. Thanks Mark for doing what you do. My hat is off to you.

I met him after some shows. My favorite was the first time, Blues Funeral tour November 2012. I had just really gotten into Lanegan after he released Blues Funeral and it got some radioplay in my country, so I bought the CD and the rest is history. I was front row, the band came on out this stage lit with a dim red light which would remain the setting for that evening, they opened up with Gravedigger and just ripped through the set like this bulldozer powered by his gravelly voice, my mind was blown. At some point someone front row shoved a beer to Mark's mic stand (he had recently gotten sober) but he simply ignored it and kept singing like this tormented creature clinging to his mic stand, it's still so vivid in my mind after 10 years. After the show he did a meet and signed stuff where you could stand in line, shake his hand and say thanks. I said "hey great show man", Lanegan responded in a really hoarse voice with THANK YOU, we shook hands, he signed my stuff and was just too kind. Rest In Peace.

Met him many times as well. The last time was for Blues Funeral in Chicago. 1st time was with Queens at the Shelter in Detroit backstage. He softened quite a bit from my perspective as far as fan interaction goes. He learned that it’s really important. Miss his new music, but there’s tons to discover.
