I read a story one time where a professional performer sung or spoke a passage of scripture. The audience gave him a standing ovation and cheers galor because his performance was so amazing. Then he went backstage and a little old gentleman that was a stage hand or custodian walked out onto the stage and spoke or sung the same passage of scripture. When he finished, there wasn't a dry eye in the audience. The older gentleman walked backstage and the professional performer met him and said "sir, you got the greatest form of applause any performer could ever receive. You moved the people into silent tears. How did you do that???" The old gentleman said "you know all the words, but I know the one who wrote them.". And I feel like there are many that perform this song "because they know words" and perform them well, but Mark knows who the one wrote the song.

I grew up knowing Mark Lowry's name as a Christian comedian. I knew he was involved with the Gaither Vocal Band, and had done some writing, but somewhere along the way I forgot that he wrote "Mary, Did You Know?" It wasn't until I started an Advent Bible reading plan going through the songs of Christmas that I discovered this was his song. It's always been one of my favorites.

I met Mark Lowry as a kid; I spent a good hour with him and he was a kind man. My parents were obsessed with this song and played it all the time during Christmas, and had my sisters sing it all the time too (and learn it on piano so they could sing and play for them). I was fortunate enough to see MARK LOWRY perform this in 1990 something. You could've heard a pin drop. Men and women with tears running down their cheeks. It was incredibly moving in ALL the best ways possible. I will TRY to " cover " this SONG, but cannot come anywhere near to these performers💔

Can you believe as long as I’ve loved this song, just today did I learn that Mark Lawry wrote it, and the first time listening to him sing it. Obviously the Holy Spirit touched Mark’s heart to write it, because I couldn’t get through it without crying, not tears of joy and not tears of sadness, but tears the Spirit brings to your heart that fills it, if you’re saved you know exactly what I am talking about. The young man from Harlan, Kentucky sang this song on the tv show, The Voice. This was the last song for him to sing before the winner was announced. His coach on the show, Adam Levine, didn't want him sing it. He sang it and brought the house down. He sings it so beautiful. I'm not taking anything away. Mark Lowrey who wrote this.
