I was at a college exhibition game at Busch stadium in 98’ to watch my brother play. Attendance was low so most spectators were able to get really close along the dugouts and behind home plate. Before the game, Mark McGwire showed up to take BP. No one had any idea he’s was going to show up. Let’s just say he put on a show that had everyone in attendance gobsmacked. Its difficult to describe. I had aspirations to play professionally as I was a decent hitter at the time and was being scouted by a few colleges. After that day, I remember thinking that I would never have the kind of talent it took to make it to the majors. McGwire’s ability to hit was so far beyond anything I had ever experienced that it made me question my own abilities. Even if I had taken steroids I could never come close to him.

@thickerconstrictor9037
@thickerconstrictor9037 Жыл бұрын
@@joshpotts6316 I would be curious to see the accurate distances of those home runs. They had no way of actually telling how far they went back then and they literally were just guessing. They had to come up with a distance in seconds and without the technology that we have today it was literally nothing more than a guess. I read an article that was really fascinating. It looked at supposed 500 ft home runs from the 90s. And 3 physicists did a study on the homeruns to determine the actual distances versus the claim distances. They had exit velocity angle that the ball went and they also had detailed schematics of the ballparks so they knew the exact distance they traveled and based on the angle and everything they could figure out how far they would have continued to go if the bleachers weren't there and it just showed that we are absolutely horrible at guessing distances. Mark McGwire hit one-off Randy Johnson that was supposedly 538 ft. They came up with that distance in less than a minute. When they figured out the actual distance, and bear in mind these are detailed studies from physicists, it went 574 feet plus or minus 5 ft. Jose canseco hit one that was supposed to be 540 and it went 443. Andres galarraga hit one that was originally estimated at 579 and then 529 was corrected. Actual distance was 480. McGwire hit one to dead center in St Louis that was estimated at 575 and it went 475. They actually found out that in order for the ball to travel 575 it would have had to be hit at 150 miles an hour off the bat at an angle of 20 degrees. The hardest hit balls have been like 122. in fact from 1988 to 1996 they did not record one true 500 ft home run. The one Mark McGwire hit in Cleveland off the back wall went 496. The one Piazza hit in Coors Field went 515. Glenallen Hill hit one that went 500 the hit the apartment building across the street from Wrigley. It's insane to me that everyone believes those old estimates over 550 ft or 600 ft from like a hundred plus years ago. The fact is they don't want to admit that those are just Legends and exaggerations but what is more likely? That baseball players over a hundred years ago actually hit balls 552 600ft which means they would have to hit the ball at 150 + miles an hour off the bat which is 30 miles an hour faster than even the best hitter today baseball players over 100 years ago actually hit balls 552 600 ft which means they would have to hit the ball at 150 plus miles an hour off the bat which is 30 miles an hour faster than even the best hitter today or that people exaggerated the distances? It's obvious that they exaggerated the distances or they found the ball after it bounced and rolled. Kingman hit one that was supposed to be 5:30 but you can see in the video it bounced well short of where they claimed it to have bounced. Statcast today isn't perfect but it is much much much closer to accurate than what we had back then. They might be off by 10 or 20 ft now but the problem is people have idea in their head of what they think of 500 ft home run looks like because they watching home runs that didn't actually go 500ft so when they see the ball go that far they think it's 500 but in reality they just had never seen one really go that far

McGwire was all over the news after he hit a ball way over LF Light Tower & out onto Washington Ave. That’s a hell of a shot when you see it in person. The farthest shot I’ve ever seen otherwise was Henry Blanco during Spring Training for the Cubs, there was like 25mph winds blowing straight out to LF and it went over the light tower but still didn’t leave Cashmen Sporting Complex. That was a BLAST and McGwires was still 77-111ft further Edit: Washington Ave. is 650-700’Ft from Home Plate. It was so far they didn’t even have a figure for it. They just did a guesstimate.

Same for Several homeruns for Babe Ruth. McGwire though was a cheater
@thickerconstrictor9037
@thickerconstrictor9037 Жыл бұрын
@@firebird_spleen4190 who gives a shit if he was a cheater it was amazing to watch. Baseball was better with steroids. And you actually believe that babe Ruth hit balls as far as people said they did when you are listening to stories that were told from over 100 years ago when they had no actual ability to measure accurately. They literally just guessed or they picked the ball up after it bounced and rolled a hundred feet and then measured there. Did you know in order to heat a 550 ft home run you would have to hit the ball 150 miles an hour off the bat. The best strongest hitters today only hit the ball about 110-120. There's no way that any baseball player fifty to a hundred years ago was hitting the ball 30 miles an hour faster than the fastest exit velocity we've recorded. And it's sad that you people actually believe that it's more likely that they were not exaggerating than the actual science behind it. A perfect example is when a team of physicists, yes physicists looked at home runs from 1988 until 1996 to get their accurate distances. They got exit velocity, launch angle, wind conditions, and they got specific dimensions of the ballpark from blueprints. And they figured out extremely accurate distances versus the estimated distances. McGwire hit one that's supposedly went 538 but the actual distance was 474 Jose canseco hit one that was supposed to be 540 that supposedly went 538 but the actual distance was 474 Jose canseco hit one that was supposed to be 540 but was actually 443. Andres galarraga hit one that was supposed to be 529 and only went 480. Mark McGwire hit one that was supposed to have gone 576 but only went 475. And they figured out that he would have had to hit the ball 155 mph at a 20 degree launch angle in order to hit the ball 575. No human being has done that or is doing that. Know how to guess properly they exaggerate and everyone believes them and it's been proven that they exaggerate and people still are gullible enough to actually believe it

@JohnMegaton2062 Жыл бұрын
@@CSDonohue11agreed. Take all the roids or amphetamines you want, you still have to center the barrel on 90+ mph fastballs, filthy sliders, and hammer curves every day. Cheating is what Houston did in the freakin World Series. THAT is an unfair advantage. Ironically not one player on that team was punished but guys who were alleged to take steroids are blackballed. I’ll be anxious to see how many players off that Astros team make the HoF with a cheated World Series on their record versus guys who worked their butts off to get better being left in the cold. It’s a hypocritical joke. Steroids are essentially a medical supplement that only benefits a player if he works his tail off in the weight room. It’s not “cheating” at the game.

There really is a science to hitting. You can call it an "art". Batting stances affect hitting and that is why most baseball players' stances are different. Shifting your weight into the ball is another. Bat positioning is another. Choking up or down on the bat is another. You have to find out what works for you.

It's so funny how gullible people are. You think that before any type of technology to accurately figure out distances quickly, that these estimations were correct haha that he hit supposedly 525 were 450-475 tops. Hahaha

Honestly I can see why they took steroids because look how far you have to hit for homeruns. MLB should move in the outfield walls at least ten feet.

you know, people have this steroid thing tattooed on their brains. It is like a reflex and I think it is a shame that we have adopted this rather hateful habit. These guys were the greatest show in the USA. I remember watching them play and just getting a thrill every time they came to the plate. And what is the truth? Better recovery after rigorous weightlifting? ok. But these were among the first guys to get into the weights and to seriously lift. And Big Mac was right: It is hand eye coordination and reflexes and leverage. I don't know haters, I think the crowd loves these guys and they are loose and happy here. Why did we have to take away all of that love and fandom? Baseball has never been this much fun since we decided to put hate into it. And you guys never stop hating. Never.

lol, what a fool. All of these guys are great hitters. You can’t reach the majors without being one. When you add to that 30 pounds of muscle from steroid-aided weight training, you can swing faster, and the ball travels farther, and it leads to more homers. Period.
