MR is an absolute gentleman. I'm a 38 year old hopeless kook who started surfing when I moved to Newcastle 14 years ago, I bought my first board from MRs old shop on Hunter St. He was so respectful and patient with my kook ass which I've since learned is not to be taken for granted in the surfing world. He spent ages with me explaining the sort of board I should get as a learner, no snobbery or too cool attitude whatsoever. I had no idea what a world class athlete I was talking to. He treated me just like he would have any local

Such a class act.

Just the most stylish and dynamic surfer ever. His board is never still, switches from rail to rail constantly, he works his whole body, arms, hands, torso, head. Completely unique.

MR is my Hero. Shaped my whole surfing journey around the world 20 year surf trip. Lived in mereweather for 6 months. Went into Ray Richard’s surf shop and got pictures with Mark. I could go on .

Ahhh good Ole MR. AKA The wounded Gull❤🎉 His style was a huge inspiration to me as a grommet just learning how to surf at age of 9. Dude could shred what they were riding in there time.

Great surfer and a gentleman in and out of the water. I enjoyed surfing with him in Hawaii back in the 80's, and to get compliments from him on my surfing made it even more special. A true humble and kind-hearted brother. Legend 🏄♂️ 🌊💙 Aloha

@@RealSurfStories MR was one of my favorites and I saw him out at Lani’s on the north shore and it was like a day out of a surfing or surfer magazine and Shaun T was out and I got there very early and by the time I was paddling in they were all paddling out! Sometimes the early bird 🦆 does get the best waves 🌊 with the locals! Aloha Kevin ❤🎉😂

I got a new twin fin that was just 5’6” and I was 5’10” at the time and I used it in CA and BajaCA in some crazy waves!🌊 but then again that’s me…

It was before the years when the crowds got really big, and we were on the pier in the front row, gripping the railing and looking down as they tore up the north side right heading towards the pier. Everyone was hooting and hollering. Still gives me chicken skin thinking about it. 😃

Why does 70s 80s surfing look way better to me. MR might not be my favourite, but look how much speed and the bottom turns this guys gets and does. Glad I was watching these guys when I was young nit the new stuff. Speed is the key I also love his honesty about surfing pipeline, you could not say that now you would get roasted.

Nice footage. What's with the protest songs? Oils were more from the 80's. MR started in the 70's. Weddingcake Island is a great song.

Thanks for the feedback. Love the Oil. Most of this video is the 80's and the pace of the rhythms fit the surfing and the era perfectly in my opinion. The messages in the lyrics about that magic country a major bonus.

Actually the Oils started in the 70s and played Northern beaches of Sydney as their home base for years

@@jebhod01 Agreed. It is uncool to disrespect the Oils. I was hoping for more of their tracks. I had their music on all the time in my teens.
