I have changed the makeup of my bag considerably after watching your videos. I ditched the long iron "ego" clubs and put in the hybrids and a three wood. I have also practiced 180-220 yards shots quite a bit. My scores have come down. I may as well play the 14 clubs that give me the best chance of scoring and make the game as easy as possible. Thanks Mark.

I think a 3 wood is an “ego” club. Most amateurs can’t hit it consistently when they should be using a 5 wood
@playingbadgolfwell97322 жыл бұрын
@@vitamind2387 I think it really depends on the loft. I have a 17* high loft Taylormade 3-wood which is essentially a 4-wood. Its only 2-3 degrees stronger than a traditional 5-wood and I find I can play it from a number of lies. However, to each his own. As you've mentioned, not everyone can play a 3-wood and I'm sure there are other clubs that other players game that I couldn't play consistently either.

Just like you, I went from more "player" style irons to what is considered game improvement with the Cleveland XL Launcher irons that you reviewed. Love the way you put the clubs in you want to and work for you! So many of us could learn from that and not be afraid to move away from “the norm and tradition” - just taken out my 4 iron and put in my 5iron from my previous set (same lofts) but it’s a bit chunkier and gives me a bit more confidence 🤞hoping it will give me the distance I want and will gap in between my proper 5 iron and 4 hybrid

Have 13 clubs, 2 CBX wedges 48 and 54. More options at the other end with 5W 7W 4H and a 5-iron hybrid. I had one of those chippers a few years ago - and I always played it around the greens, maybe too much. I left it one day near a bunker - and never saw it again. I finished the round with my 48 wedge chipping and never went back. When I struggled chipping - the C Wedge chipper was a life-saver. (I could have used it yesterday!) It does look great in the black satin. My 54 wedge is black satin and I love that look.

Oh wow. Interesting. Enjoy. In hindsight my first set of irons last year needed to be just 6-PW and then all three Smart Sole 4 wedges. However, my CBX2 54 is probably my most important club not named driver or putter. I also have the 46 and 50. I do game the Smart Sole 4 S hoping I never need to use it. I’d say 90% usage is from the sand.

I've got the chipper in my bag and it saves shots, especially in the winter. Granted its not the most glamorous club, but when you roll it up to the hole from a wet, soggy, winter lie and you're watching your mate duff a lob wedge its just as satisfying. I suspect it might get replaced in the summer, but who knows, it might stay in for the old bump and run. Keep it to yourselves though, I don't want to lose the advantage!!

I’m at the point where I’m considering a new bag of clubs. You’ve certainly given me a lot to reconsider, I was thinking of a ‘standard’ set, driver, 3 & 5 wood, 6 to sand then wedges. Now I’m having a rethink! I don’t have a fast swing, so now looking down the hybrid and game improvement route. Thanks Mark, you’ve helped a lot there.
@leighlin0072 жыл бұрын
My main hybrid is a Cleveland HiBore 4i (22 degree) and this doubles up as my go-to club for those tricky little shots just off the green, from bare, muddy and fluffy lies. Over the winter it's saved me at least 3-4 shots/round compared to my abysmal efforts using a wedge or iron to chip or bump and run. So I don't need to play different wedges and/or irons for different distances. I just use one Hybrid and change the length of backswing to cover different distances. It just makes things so much easier. But I love the idea of the more lofted chipper to get over even more longer areas of grass before the ball lands on the green, as the Hybrid still has limitations in that respect. Anything that makes certain golf shots easier, and lowers my score goes in the bag. Thanks Mark.

Some of your bag ideas are similar to mine. I too have a 2nd P wedge due to my strong lofted TM M4 iron set - 43 and 48. I also just got that exact same Cleveland 52 degree to even out my gaps (replaced a redundant 50 degree). Now have 48-52-56-60. To get down to 14 clubs I don't carry a 3-wood. Always been bad off the deck with them and love hitting driver off the tee anyway.
@rdj3video2 жыл бұрын
Justin gets it. Driver off the tee even if I’m forcing myself to get comfortable with a club that can never really be tamed. I have a 42 degree set PW, and then a 46, 50, 54 (all CBX2) AND the Smart Sole 4 S (58). Really no room to try fitting in this chipper which I did try for about a month last year when I had a different setup. 3 Wood is the club I would move in and out of the bag as I have a 5W, 7W and 5H. All Cleveland Launcher XL. Don’t need to get rid of a 3W, just don’t always need it in the bag. Any replacement for the 3W would be something in the 27-29 degree range that makes me comfortable OR that darn chipper.😂 The black satin look is pretty cool. That’s also the color for my CBX2 wedges.

After 15-years or so, I've completely reconfigured my bag. Although it really hurt, I took out my well-loved Ping BeCu ISI irons and replaced them with Srixon ZX-4 irons (5-PW); replaced my 56* SW and 60* lob wedge with a Cleveland Smart Sole 4 58* sand wedge; replaced my gap wedge with a matching Cleveland Smart Sole 4 50* gap wedge; added a Cleveland Smart Sole 42* chipper; and replaced my Ping B60 putter with the Odyssey Eleven putter. There's really nothing in my bag from the previous season (including driver, woods and hybrids). Generally, I avoid changing clubs like the plague. But I'm convinced the new clubs are much more forgiving and have been instrumental in lowering my scores (and handicap).

When you went through the wedges I was about to race in to the comments and drop in the “C” bomb. Astonished you didn’t have it in after the review the other day. Agree with your last comment around egos and what’s in the bag. Exactly the point of golf is to get the ball in the hole in as little shots as possible. The card doesn’t ask how you get there. Taken me a while to accept this especially when you play with bigger hitters. Been experimenting with different clubs also and have gone back to a couple I took out and now can’t remember why.

I’ve mixed up the bag a bit this year. I’m going driver, 4 wood (for off the deck, softer fadey flight) 2 iron (off the tee, low bullet, windy shot), 7W, 24 degree hybrid, 5-Pw, 52 & 58 wedge, putter. Relatively fast SS (115-120) but I love the extra height I can get from my longer clubs, plus I’ve got the option of knocking down my 2i, hybrid or 5i into the wind depending on distance.

Great to hear Mark advocating for the need to tailor your bag to what you need and what works for you, because I’ve been doing it for years. I have always been excellent with fairway woods and have struggled with irons … I initially replaced my longer irons with hybrids, but the flight and trajectory were not as consistent as I would like, so I ended up opted for more fairway woods and my handicap has improved as a result. Bag now is: Ping driver; XXIO 4 & 7 woods; Calloway Epic 9 & 11 woods; 6-PW & GW Ping G410 irons; and Ping Glide 55 & 60 degree wedges; and a TaylorMade Spider X putter. Sound strange to you that I’ve got 4 different brands of club? … I’m 61 years old and playing off 9 because I’m happy to employ the clubs that work for me, while others don’t even consider deviating from the norm.

I've got more brands than that in my bag. LOL I've got a Taylor Made driver. A Ping 5 wood. A Cleveland 7 wood. A Callaway hybrid. Mizuno irons. Kirkland wedges (incredible for the price) and Ray Cook putter. If I can't hit a club, it comes out of the bag. Even with all of those brands, I only carry 12 clubs. Do you feel the pro , youtubers and product reviewers have the ability to have a better rounded golf bag to suit them as they have the ability and exposure to more clubs. You can take 3/5clubs out on the course and see what you like at brand new. However unless something is secondhand or 8-12months old very few pro shops support this. As for wedges other than a few indoor hits very few places let you try wedges out. (Hate the game not the player)

Definitely a lot of good to take away from your bag setup that would benefit most amateurs. I’ve completely changed my outlook on clubs and now have the “ugliest “ set by traditional standards I’ve ever had, but it’s also my favorite set. Love my mongrel bag and Smart Sole is a lifesaver in rough and sand. Off 5.6 and loving the sun. Great selection mate, Cheers

I do love how you have taken the ego out of your club choices!

I would game a chipper no problem. Currently experimenting with my 22 degree hybrid for chipping, but the more upright shaft on the chipper might be better.

Yes, not only would I game a chipper, ive been carrying the Cleveland chipper for almost a year. I feel Mark snuck a look into my bag. I carry the Zx4s irons, a Cleveland cbx wedge, and a 3H & 4H.

I agree Mark. Golf should be fun and enjoyable, so if my handicap drops I'm going to use game improvement irons not forged blades or similar. I like the hollow body irons also. Can you suggest hybrids that are not draw bias as the ones I have tested as a lefty tended to go left to right.

I also have a cleveland chipper and I agree, it's great

Always fun to see what you have in the bag. Rather than a chipper (I have 2 in the cupboard) I've cut down a 48 wedge. So easy to chip and pitch with. Try it?

I am so proud of you for choosing the chipper. Your content with Coach using that chipper was awesome. He should do the same or expect a portion of the army to join the parfield group. Lol. Cheers mate.

Always loved the Q-Star Divide when it came out. I just loved seeing the ball flight. To my eyes it’s easier to spot. The Chipper thing I get since you’ve got the slot in the bag. I can’t wait to see how this experiment goes! 2 Hybrids and a Chipper… sounds like you’ve got a working title for a song. LOL. Depending on the conditions I might take a hard look at that chipper idea.

Love the philosophy! "Get it in the hole with the least number of strokes." That is certainly what the game is about.
