Very glad I found this I started to practice with my canes and I have found that I need practice very badly. I got very proficient with a wooden sledge hammer handle I use to swing around. That was a long time ago because my hands are very tender now they hurt just handling the cane a little while. I have canes because I need them so I have done a lot of sitting around. I now see I need to get a specialized fighting cane too the one I have is not going to cut it too narrow does not allow for technique. My wrist is weak too that arm never uses the cane just twirling it around a little I realize I need a lot of work. Hope the extra exercise will net in weight loss.

Any object can be a weapon, the issue most victims have is developing the mindset to actually hit some one with the sole purpose of harming them enough that could or would kill, and or incapacitate them. I've read and interviewed black belts in various forms of martial arts, who got their asses kicked during an altercation. Because though they go to the dojo everyday, the bulk of their parctice is holding back. I mean a gun is only usefull if and when one has the mindset to actually utilize it without hesitation. More people are harmed even though they had martial arts training or a weapon in which they never practiced real life senarios. Knowing what to do and when to do it becomes moot, when one hesitates and or doesn't do it. I've carried a cane for more than 50 years, and have utilized it defensively on only a few occasions. Twice one dogs that were not leashed in a public park and twice while being confronted by person(s) I personally deem as someone who was about to harm me. The two dogs died, and the two individuals went to the hospital. Anyone can learn to twirl a cane and practice kata. However the physics involved when the cane actually strikes an object or person will cause the cane to react in such a manner that the holder unless practiced hitting objects has learned to respond to the various responding actions and developed a mindset which is contrary to our teachings in life as to respecting other's in such a way as to not cause harm.

I recently saw this and wondered why all the twirling of the cane. Anyone trained in close quarter hand to hand, such as bjj or Krav Maga would simply move close, pin the arm and the cane would be useless. It would seem better to use a very plain sturdy cane, like the one you use to move hogs and cattle, then use it like a bokken in kendo or skidoo’s as a striking weapon to attack the throat with a thrust, attack the head with an overhead strike or attack the wrists. You could also attack the body with a diagonal stoke. I would love to see two of these guy actually spar to see how their techniques hold under force on force use.

The horn catches my wrist when I try to twirl the cane
@samscott26619 жыл бұрын
+nabrudigam you can "open" the horn by rasping or sawing and then smoothing it by sanding. That's what I always do...
@nabrudigam9 жыл бұрын
+Sam Scott Thanks Scott. I thought about that but the wood is pretty thick. Seem to me I'd have to saw off quite a bit. Like about 5 inches.
@samscott26619 жыл бұрын
I go to lots of "junk stores" looking for old canes to re-work. Cutting the horn is usually always needed. A jig saw does the job...

I like the cane for self defense. This guy does not understand self defense however. Just the basics, any weapon is an extension of your body!

I carry a cane because of my knee. I am older than Master Shuey (78). I find even what Master Shuey calls basic cane technique to be too fancy for me to use in self-defense. I never reverse the grip on my cane because it is a cane, not a tonfa. I also practice at much lower speed than his fast moves since my main self-defense style is Taiji.

PLEASE TRUST ME ON T’Ai Chi Ch’uan. Cane would be perfect for Tai Chi. Develop your OWN KATA, make it six or eight moves, as you work at it concentrate on SLOW and allow the Kata to adapt, change or find its "own way". Secret is PRACTICE, AND SLOWY ALLOWING THE FORM TO MOVE AND GROW

Good reply Walter. We older folks with different abilities need techniques that we can actually apply and count on,

I studied Hapkido and Arnis de Mano for many many years I am 67 now and still walk pretty good but I live in NYC and the trains are pretty crazy,even the cops are being mugged,The cane is the only thing I can openly carry legally! Not a big fan of spinning the cane with an open hand if you hit something you may lose it, straight strikes and a solid grip is the way to go!

Nice to watch but not strong enough becasue you don't use your hips at all. You should try practice your exercises on some objects as well bacause strikes on the air are not real at all.

so someone shoots on you, takes you down with basic jiu jitsu skills an your now grappling? actual altercation you got 1 shot with the stick before most fights go to the ground thats a fact. i'm not a BULLSHITO student but off your feet stick no good
@bigtony48294 жыл бұрын
one shot is enough if you do it right ...You can also use it like a kubaton and lever pry and throw your opponent .it also can block a punch or kick resulting in injury to the attacker ...
