Welcome to the Dark Era of M. Night Shyamalan's fascinating career as a writer/director! After giving us a trio of damn near flawless classics like The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs, I can only assume Shyamalan's pact with the devil expired, causing him to shit out films like this, Lady in the Water, The Last Airbender, and After Earth. Shyamalan truly is a filmmaker with some serious range.

@@BadassRaiden you can like Lady in the Water but don't act like it was actually a good film. I like The Happening but I know it's bad. That's part of its charm. Lady in the Water was a silly bed time story. I mean, they used cereal boxes to tell a prophecy...

@@roni2971 I don't get why so many people like The Visit either. It has so many glaring issues, it's not competently made. YMS has a good breakdown about all of Shyamalan movies.
@BadassRaiden
@BadassRaiden Жыл бұрын
@@alexs1640 a silly bed time story doesn't mean it's not a good film. The film itself was executed fine. Comparing it to The Happening is laughable and pathetic. That actually is a bad movie, meaning it's execution was poor and dismal. For starters the biggest difference between the two films is the acting. The characters in Lady In The Water acted believable, regardless of how ridiculous the nature of any one character might have been, like Reggie. The acting in The Happening was horrific and you're right, that is part of it's charm. I also happen to like The Happening, but I can recognize that Lady In The Water is actually a decently executed film. Regardless of whatever rotten tomatoes says, cuz I know it has a low score there - it's actually a good film. Plenty of people like bad shit, and hate good shit. The example I use all the time is the lovely Keeping Up with the Kardashians show, that lasted a mind boggling 20+ seasons. Meanwhile excellent shows like Stalker with Maggie Q and Dylan McDermott, and Forever with Ioan Gruffudd didn't make it past the first season, despite having hardcore followings - simply because they weren't able to compete with the ridiculous viewer count of dumpster fire shows like Keeping Up With the Kardashians. You can't get past the fact that Lady In The Water was a silly bedtime fairy tale, that's your problem, doesn't make it not a good movie. You know what does make a movie not a good movie? Bad acting.

This was honestly one of my favourites as a kid but not for the reasons intended. My sisters and I would relentlessly quote the ridiculous lines in the movie, and some of the goofy deaths would get dramatic reenactments. Despite the darker subject matter, I've gotta say, ideal age to watch this is like 10-14 Though I do genuinely think there is a world this could have been a decent movie, the biggest problem is that they cast for a quirky comedy instead of a horror movie. A lot of the time its not as much the writing thats a problem but the delivery

I hope you are recovering well after enduring this movie. I'm still trying to figure out the acting choices and what Shyamalan's instructions were to the cast because it was so bad and I can't buy that it was parody... it just doesn't add up!
@stephenconger2029
@stephenconger2029 Жыл бұрын
It's a parody. But not of a genre. Of humanity. Of carrying on like we have a clue when we have absolutely no idea what's going on about. That's what the "show house" is about. The fake books and computers, it's a nod to the facade of knowledge. The real twist in the happening is that nothing happened. No plants, no terror attack, just a suicide in a park and then hysteria. It's a much darker film than anyone realizes.
@shumlina
@shumlina Жыл бұрын
@@stephenconger2029 I dunno about all that, but even so it still doesn't explain the bad acting lol! I do like a lot of Shyamalan's movies though. Signs is one of my favourites because of its themes of fate and religion, and even how it vibes with some eschatological theories about aliens being demons. also, I highly recommend a Canadian movie called Pontypool if you haven't seen it. I believe it came out in the same year as The Happening. The acting is great, and it plays with ideas about knowledge and mass hysteria in a really unnerving way.
@stephenconger2029
@stephenconger2029 Жыл бұрын
@@shumlina I walked out of the theater confused and wanting my money back. But I couldn't get the scene of Wahlberg sniffing the fake wine out of my head. It just kept bugging me. Like a message. It was so awkward. Many years later I gave it a go again. And again. And I concluded the twist in the happening is exposed in the first few minutes as the woman kills herself and her friend describes the horror that she sees, we don't see any of it. We just see the one woman kill herself. My theory is that everyone else that kills themself from that point forward was there, or heard about it from someone there or previous event. Add up the facts. Not everyone kills themselves. The maps look like pathogens on a petri dish, when they should look like allergy outbreaks. Wind predominantly heads east in the US it shouldn't have left the coast. I think he brilliantly played us we hated it and that's what he wanted. And he's not correcting anyone.

This is a "so bad it's good" movie, 100%. I think if you had known how bad this movie was and that many people watch it as a so bad it's good movie like The Room, Troll 2, anything hy Neil Breen, or my favorite: Birdemic. The Happening isn't on the same legendary tier as the 3 movies + "filmmaker" I just mentioned, but I'd still put The Happening on the A tier if the other movies I've mentioned are S tier. I think if you rewatched this with a friend, drank some alcohol, and didn't try to take this movie seriously, I really think you'd have a good time. I'm also legitimately surprised that you've never heard about the really bad movies Shyamalan has done. He's notorious for having a really good start to his film career with Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs. Then he just started making ridiculous garbage. Some plain bad, others so bad they're good. After Signs, M. Night Shyamalan made The Village which was mediocre at best, 5 or 6 out of 10, and it had moments that were so bad it's good, but overall, not a good enough amount of moments to classify as so bad it's good. After that he made his 1st so bad it's good movie: Lady in the Water. It's a ridiculous movie with a decent ratio of so bad it's good moments. I'm tired of typing so bad it's good so I'll abbreviate it for the rest of my comment as SBIG. Back to Lady in the Water. It's not my favorite SBIG Shyamalan movie, but it's pretty funny. Then he made this masterpiece; The Happening I'd give it a 7 or 8/10 if it's watched in the mindset of SBIG, if it's watched unironially and seriously, then it's a 2 or 3/10. After this, Shyamalan made possibly his worst movie, Avatar: The Last Airbender, the live action one. This also has some SBIG moments and can be watched as an SBIG movie, though it's not as funny as The Happening. If you're a fan of the Avatar cartoon, then steer clear of the Shyamalan movie because it'll just make you mad. But if you've never seen it, then it's a decent SBIG movie. After Avatar, Shyamalan did After Earth with Will and Jayden Smith. It's too boring for a SBIG viewing, 2/10. Avatar and After Earth really ruined Shyamalan's career because they were Total bombs, as were his 3 films before avatar. All 5 were panned by most critics and his scores just got lower and lower each film. He took a long break after After Earth and couldn't get any work until Jason Blum threw him 5 million to make The Visit. That was his comeback movie and Split after that got him back to form. Though he's repeating his history of 3 good movies then 5 bad ones. The Visit, Split, and Glass were his 3 good to slightly mediocre movies and now he just made "Old" which is a really goofy and sometimes hilarious movie. Also, Zooey Deschanel and John Leguizamo aren't bad actors. Shyamalan just has his actor's deliver really bad dialog and directs them to deliver it in very stilted ways. The bad acting is Shyamalan's fault because these actors, as well as many other actors that have given bad performances in other Shyamalan films, are talented and have done good work in other films. I mean, Marky Mark gives a legendarily bad performance in The Happening, but it's definitely a SBIG performance. The most iconic lines in this film are from Marky Mark lol.

I mean if this twist could work not that it would because the guy says it early on that *"It's the plants!"* Okay so the earth is the threat? Honestly I just think the twist would work because it's the plant life that's making people off themselves but honestly but if I had to fix this twist, I would write it to where you keep the twist that it's the plants that makes people commit suicide and shit but then write in a second twist in their where it's oh it's not the plants as you turns out it's actually some sort of supernatural force, or some sort of government bio weapon experiment gone wrong, or it's a plague disease that's making them commit suicide or some shit.

I actually saw this movie in latin spanish when I was yunger and the spanish voice actors made the movie better, like their voice expressions added more feeling to the movie. By the way M Night Shyamala has very few good movies like "the sixth sense", "devil", "signs" and other, and yes he did "split" and the precuel to that "unbreakable" but he also did the secuel to "split", "glass" ruining the trilogy. And he also did the movie for the tv cartoon "avatar the last air bender" hated by everyone. Something has happened to that guy that he cannot make good movies anymore, consistently. In this movie for some reason everyone's acting was bad and funny thing is that they are really good actors. The main girl, she is a very famous actress and for some reason her acting in here was horrible.

This movie is a huge guilty pleasure of mine, the execution is so bad it's good, and the concept is really really unique and cool. If they didn't fuck it up so bad this movie would be genuinely horrifying.
