I grew up about 35 miles north of Boston and wore dungarees. These were what we wore after school, so not to wear out our school clothes. Also were cheaper. And we wore sneakers - girls only wore "girl" sneakers, never "boy"' sneakers. Girls wore skirts or dresses. In the winter we wore "ski pants" heavy multi-layered, we took them off and hung them in the coat room at school.
