Mark Williams Trade Rescinded. Can Lakers Find Another Center? Did Pelinka Make a Mistake?

Күн бұрын

In news that frankly was more stunning than the acquisition of center Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets late last week, on Saturday evening it was announced that the deal was off. Williams failed his physical with the Lakers. This sort of thing is exceedingly rare.
Did Rob Pelinka screw this up (and in the process cost the Lakers a chance to get a different center whose body they presumably wouldn't decide is a ticking time bomb? Did the Hornets try to hide the ball and hoodwink the Lakers into giving up (a lot of) assets for a guy they knew was damaged? Or was this just the process playing out as it should?
Either way, the Lakers are now short the starting center they thought they had on Thursday as the deadline passed, and don't have many options to try and solve the problem. Essentially, they're down to players available through the buyout market (the most prominent being Daniel Theis and former Laker (albeit briefly) Mo Bamba. Could those guys help a little? Maybe? Depends on how we're defining "help" and "a little." Are they difference makers? Absolutely not. (And because both Knecht and Reddish are back on the roster, they'd have to cut someone to make the room.
Maybe they roll with Jaxson Hayes and two-way centers Trey Jemison III and Christian Koloko, creating roster space for one of them to be converted to a regular NBA contract, since two-way guys aren't eligible for the postseason.
But mostly, it's just pretty clear the Lakers are going to have to finish the year with a different roster than the one they had hoped for, which means JJ Redick and his staff will have to adjust accordingly. Winning games like Saturday in Indiana feel even more important now, since the team could be a little weaker. Winning games like those, and like the one coming tonight against Utah (with Luka Doncic hopefully ready to make his debut in LA), are/will be critical for giving the Lakers a little cushion to absorb any slow start they might have in the Doncic Era.

SEGMENT 1: The Williams Deal is Dead
SEGMENT 2: Did Pelinka make a mistake, here?
SEGMENT 3: AD injured. That sucks.

Nobody is to blame?? Rob, et al, have known for YEARS LAL needed another big. AD has been begging for it! Here we have a non-competetive team who started the season with 2 bigs on their roster who they were willing to move and RP didn't know M. Williams was available until CHA called him, days before the deadline, after seeing the Luka presser?! Yeah... I'm pretty sure RP is to blame for not having a deal already in the works months ago... or at very least, not knowing which C's in the league were available. -DP

Jaxson Hayes is a vertical lob threat. Everybody is disrespecting Jaxson. He is better than any potential buyout candidate.
@LockedOnLakers
@LockedOnLakers 16 сағат бұрын
Hayes is definitely better than any buyout option, but he's nonetheless not an ideal starting center for a team with contending aspirations. Rotation? Fine. But not 25-ish mpg in that context. And in the meantime, that Hayes is better than any buyout speaks to the issue the Lakers will have just gathering up playable size behind him. Appreciate you watching. AK

@daro2487 16 сағат бұрын
@@LockedOnLakers if he keeps playing like he has the past couple of weeks, I disagree. Time will tell. We will see if Luka can turn Hayes into a offensive threat consistently. Luka might get Jaxson paid by making him look way better than he is. Jaxson’s best attribute is that he is a vertical lob threat.
@LockedOnLakers
@LockedOnLakers 15 сағат бұрын
@@daro2487 We will see and obviously, I'd love to be wrong. But the bulk of Hayes' career suggests he's not viable (much less ideal) as a starting center for a contending team. Which again, doesn't mean he can't contribute to a contending team. And I agree, he's played very well of late. But I need a larger sample size to be convinced. AK
@daro2487
@daro2487 15 сағат бұрын
@ yeah, that is true that he has been very inconsistent. I am praying Jaxson is turning a corner in his career lol. I just don’t understand the narrative that they need a “lob threat”. They need a shot blocker and rebounder that can occasionally catch lobs. Cause Jaxson is as good a lob threat as any center in the league.

Amongst the remaining options for centers, the best option(s) actually are on the roster. Either Hayes-Woods or Hayes-Kleber-Woods available by the playoffs is i think the best we can do.... One reason is they're all better than what might be available in the buyout market and also secondly, they would've all played with Luca!! Till playoffs, we have to make do with the 2-way guys...

Less haste, more speed might be the better approach with returning some of these players like AD in Dallas. I'm as excited to see Luka as the next person but they could have put his debut on the backburner for the next two games and then it's the all star break. The guy hasn't played since Christmas and every basketball journalist in the globe is probably goint to be inspecting his performance under a microscope. Putting his debut on ice for an extra couple of weeks, in the grand scheme of things, might have been the smart move.

I didn’t think much of the rescinded trade until the statement Charlotte put out immediately after when they blatantly lied about the course of events and then shortly after that learning that their trade with PHX is also currently still pending. Not sure if they also approached PHX but, both deals were buzzer beaters addressing 2 specific teams with urgent needs. Maybe they were hoping that they’d just take what they offered because they were helping them out. I’m curious to see how that unfolds.

The Hornets had to release a statement to make Mark feel better. The Phoenix trade did go through and is 100% finalized. Why would the Hornets try to pull a fast one on the Lakers when they know Mark has to go through a full physical? That makes 0 sense. It’s just not logical because you know the Lakers would find something if you are hiding something.

Two games up front to do some gelling and allow the coaches to observe the fit and develop updated schemes. Then you have the all start break (ultimately more time to rest/recover) and then you pick back up with the regular season. This is the move. Sorry but resting him two more games is a trash take. Not to mention, he’s pissed…and a motivated Luka sucks for the rest of the league. Let the man cook.

@ryanbanes6029 Trash take is that you just want to see him play. You think two games is gonna be the difference between 30 or 32 games? They have TWO MONTHS until the playoffs start, April.16th. He has strained that calf 4 times in 3 years..WTF is the advantage of not giving him another 12 days against the risk of an Achilles injury? AD was anxious to play. They let HIM "cook" in Dallas. Where'd that get them? Utah sucks. They play them twice. They'll beat them twice. 12 days. I mean, if he's totally ready, and they play him, they're only going to play him in one of those two Utah games anyway.

For the long term it is better they had to give up to much for a big man that has a worst injury history than AD, and it isn't like they were gone win this season. The western conference is so good that you need at least 2 good big man to have a shot.

Lakers MUST get MO BAMBA back....fits Lob threat with a 3 pt threat. do not mind his orig Lakers (and other stints) where he got very low minutes to develop. imagine 1st FIVE: Luca, Lebron, DFS, Mo and Hayes. 4 lob threats from Luca, 4 with 3 point shot...biggest first 5 and best path to beat Jokic (2 bigs coz lanky Not bulky, runs with 3s). best path to beat the joker, OKC and Celtics

I don't think there is foul play from Hornets or buyers remorse from Lakers. Maybe I am too naive, but I feel like just what we see makes sense. Hornets shared the medicals they had, Lakers saw them as adequate. Lakers looked at the player on detail and confirmed he is damaged goods and returned him. That's all

Hayes is a Legit Lob Threat however, I think We still need another Athletic Center to complement Luka/LBJ - Bring Howard/McGee/Cauley-Stein/etc. in for Tryouts Yesterday and take Them thru a Hour Full Court Workout Each in Front of Luka/LBJ and if none of Them are a Good Fit, Go with Mo Bamba and bring in Howard as a Consultant to get Our Big Men Ready!!! Koloko/Hayes are only 24; You still have kids in College that are 22/23!!! Develop Hayes/Koloko - They have the Ability to be Younger/Low Budget Versions of McGee/Howard.

Watched some video on Williams and he looked really good. It's unfortunate this didn't work out. Why did the Hornets want to give up on their 23 year old center? He's one of their best players.

Mark Williams played only 23 games this season out of a possible 48 games because of an early season foot injury. Last season it was a back injury. I don’t understand the Lakers GM being so irresponsible to attempt that type of risky.

This trade getting rescinded is actually a good thing. I think Pelinka was still in the haze of the Luka deal when he acquired Williams. The Lakers gave up WAY too much. Now they can make a deal this summer that won’t cost Knecht.
