I think Mark Williams was spot on when you look back over the the top 7 or 8 players over the last 20 years or so, I think they would all still be winning titles today if they were at their prime.
@frankberryfilms12 күн бұрын
Absolutely. People go on about how the standard is higher now... it is far better the deeper you go down the rankings, in general, but at the very top there is nobody new who would stop a prime Hendry from winning. That's evident from all the old heads still doing the business in the top-16

@@frankberryfilms Hendry cemented the standard that is there today ,it’s not really much better it’s just there are more players playing at that level now .
@graemejack90402 күн бұрын
@@frankberryfilmsabsolutely agree, 100%! So many people write off Hendry’s achievements based on the argument that the standard of the game was “ so much lower back then “. I’ve been making the same argument that Mark makes here that yes the standard further down the rankings is unquestionably higher now than it was then however the standard at the very top isn’t! Some of The players he names are still in the top ten now and the others are more than a match for any of the current top players! Hendry won everything in the same era as Davis, Jimmy, Ronnie, Higgins, Williams, Hunter, Ebdon etc. He won it all in his 20’s pretty much. Yes players like Judd have better cue power and can play shots that Hendry never could. Selbys safety game is easily the best the sport has ever seen etc. I think the biggest difference between Hendry and every other player ( especially the modern era players ) was his mentality! His mental strength, absolute commitment to being the best, constant practice regime, hunger to win and to obliterate his opponents, his strategy of not being friends with other players and being a presence that other players feared. His ability to consistently play at his top level match after match. His ability to play his best snooker in the highest pressure situations! Nobody has ever had bottle like Hendry! He won 29 consecutive matches at the crucible!!! 5 years unbeaten there playing the best players in the entire sport! All in his mid 20’s! His winning streak of 36 consecutive matches winning 5 consecutive ranking tournaments when he was 20/21 years old!! For me that’s what sets him apart from today’s players and why if that Prime Hendry played now he’d still be no:1 I think the reason he was only at that level for a decade or so was because it’s impossible to maintain that intensity for longer periods of time. It takes a toll. Mentally, physically etc. It cost him his marriage and had other negative impacts. He had missed out on the whole social side of everything. He started to resent spending all that time alone practicing etc. He became friends with Williams first then others and lost that aura of superiority over them. He’s only human after all. People forget how good he and all the other players were then. They should go back and watch him in his prime! The 1999 World Championship semi final where Hendry won 17-13 is arguably the highest level of snooker you could hope to see. It’s the two greatest players of all time, at the peak of their rivalry where they really didn’t like each other playing in the highest pressure situation in the greatest competition/arena in the sport!!

Is he really not able to simply work on his backswing/cue action? Sometimes it just seems like he doesn't bother trying, but maybe he should just knuckle down and make time for 2 or 3 practice sessions a week where he focuses on just that. Yips or whatever you want to call it, it's not some mythical magic that's unstoppable, it surely just needs training out. If Stephen reads these, whether or not he feels it pointless to bother with, it would make for a great little mini series for the channel - a little diary of videos with him trying his best to retrain that arm. It would surely produce some improvement and at least help with his seniors and exhibitions or whatever else.

Love the channel. Love snooker and football. English people as a whole don't seem to see snooker as a sport and therefore don't realise the sheer Messi-esque talent they have had in the sport for 30 years called Ronnie O' Sullivan. A genius. Stephen is insane aswell. Snooker has to be the most difficult sport. If Stephen dedicated himself to snooker like O'Sullivan did, when things got really tough, and seemed like he wouldnt win again (like ronnie 2009/11) Stephen would still be top 16 with Williams and Higgins but would require intense tunnel vision snooker dedication. Its proof that to be the best, talent can give you everything and take you miles away from any competitor like it did for Stephen but to compete for 30 years like the class of 92 (heard that phrase before....) you also need to sacrifice your time and go down the psychology route, go down the safety training route, dedicate your life to the sport, accept years of ranking tournament failures and use that as motivation to work even harder just like mark williams, ronnie, higgins did to get back and compete. Mark fell out of the top 48 in 2008. Stephen doesnt need the hassle and he probably retired in 2012 cos hes minted and dubious of psychological intervention, especially with the yips etc. Even to this day no one apart from O' Sullivan has got near his triple crown haul. Jeeeeees I wrote an essay there sorry lol
