Our club shoots a 10 shot offhand match at 500 yards on a Buffalo steel target. It’s cut from 48x48 plate. Single shot, iron sight, lead bullets. Cartridges from 38/55 to big 45’s 6-7 out if 10 not uncommon has been won with 10/10. Those rifles will shoot no doubt about it. Close misses you had would have all hit our target. Nice work

Carrots are a real thing. The night before I did my final rifle qualification for the US Army Infantry school at Ft Benning back in the early 90s, my Senior Drill Sergeant said he had a secret weapon to help us shoot Expert. Quigleys shooting skills are phenomenal. But to the decerning movie watcher his true superpower is ranging the bucket. A heavy bullet at that range and velocity is arching like a horseshoe and has to be sighted to an exact range or no dice.

Except that the entry and exit holes are pretty much parallel to the ground. If the bullet arced like you claim, the exit hole would be in the bottom of the bucket.

699 scope wouldn't help much ,that gun doesn't have the ability to consistently hit the bucket at that distance, then there is a little problem of holding the rifle steady enough to hold on target, then of course the open sights make aiming at the bucket impossible at that distance and so after a number of shots he fluke'd a hit but couldn't repeat, there are people who can do slightly better but the fact remains hitting the bucket is a fluke....now try the 782 yd bucket shot which is just another 327 yards farther....of course you'll need a scope just to see the bucket but little facts like that aren't necessary for a movie and possibly best left out

Great shooting. Many decades ago during basic, I remember being told (and experiencing) that at 400m, pretty close to 450yds, you can't differentiate between torso, head and limbs when using an open sight, it is true. So, a small bucket is about the size of a big head, like mine, and the shooting of near centre of that bucket is very impressive. At my best, when shooting evey day, I'd have managed an occasional shot like that (after quite a bit of sighting in), so, watching you do that was just great. I doubt if my old arthritic body and weak eyes could manage that prone these days, so, I can only hope that we don't get invaded by bucket like aliens anytime soon. Thanks for the video.

Really enjoy your videos, especially when you are talking more and giving descriptions of your shots, that being said, I know you let your shooting do the talking most of the time. Cheers!

husband speaking age 82 - I was in the U.S. Air Force 1963 -1967 and on the rifle team for all four years. I was on my High School rifle team also. in 1965 the AF team was in Monroe, Wash. and we were shooting the M-1 Grand. My longest shot was at 800 yards, iron sights, our target I believe was 4 feet wide. Our last match was to be at 1000 yards but I had to leave to attend a funeral and did not get to shoot that last distance. Our team shot both the 22 rifle indoor and outdoor - usually 50 yards. I was ranked a Master by the NRA with both rifles in all 4 positions. My last match was to represent 15th Air Force at the National Match in Blythville, Ark. 1967 and I finished 6th over all and was First in the sitting position. The most fun I had for the 4 years.

A fellow shooter had 45/70 sharps style rifle at the 200 yard range. I got to take about 10 shots with it. he was running red dot (13 grns?) powder with a 405 slug. I was shooting a 18" plate at 200 yards and was shocked how easy it was to connect with the peep sight. No wonder so many buffalo were killed with this rifle.

Hey from Knob Creek Road Kentucky. Good to see a well reasoned, true to life, version of "The Quigley Bucket Shot". Your estimation(s) of the distance with the Marston Homestead in the background of the foreground bucket seemingly isn't considered in most if not all estimations of distance in reference to "the shot". Most distances estimated seemingly are based on a time measurement. Be that total time of the scene, time of the rider or time of the actions of Tom Selleck. Admittedly, this technique hasn't ever occurred to myself and I will be referencing it from here on. On a side note , Brownells is now in possession of Tom Selleck's Quigley rifle. Hate for you to go through the trouble to find Tom Selleck so you can borrow it when he's no longer the keeper of it. Great shooting as always and great job with the distance.

Great vid mate . Long way to see a bucket lol. One of my favorite shots (only 1 a comp) is a fundraiser for Kids with cancer, that a couple in our WARA association run at major comps. 1 round, after our last detail at the longest range. (usually 900 yards) Its placed on the backstop mound, so usually 25-30 or so yards further than sight set for last range, gotta calculate that in . We shoot at a chalk powder filled garden gnome. 6 inch by 3 inch. Finish our detail, collect our gear, then move to the end of the mound, lay down and fire 1 round at gnomey. lol. With iron peeps its pretty much impossible to see the gnome, so have to find it with the spotting scope, decide what to use as reference, then let her go. Ive clipped it on the bottom 🤔i think(took the dirt out from under and tipped it over) but didnt break the target, so a miss lol. That gnominator patch is a prize worth shooting for. A bit of fun at the end of a weekend comp for a good cause :)
