Hello and welcome to the final part of my build guide for the Tamiya MF-01X Ford Escort Mk2 on the MF-01X chassis. In this episode I focus on the bodywork, stickers (or decals) and fitting of LED's to the front and rear lights, including the addition of LED's to the four front spotlights. The kit includes light buckets for the two front and rear lights, but LED's are not included. The four spotlights are not really LED ready, but there is a 3mm hole in the centre perfect for 3mm LED's. I show how I fit the LED's to all of the lights, and the finished lights look awesome, I hope you agree! The sticker job is much trickier than it may appear, not too many decals, but many complex curves to bend them around, a little heat from my wife's hairdryer was needed! I hope you enjoy the finished Ford Escort rally car. Enjoy the build and I hope you find some useful tips along the way. Many thanks for watching, and happy RCing my friends!
Tamiya MF-01X Specifications:
★Length: 397mm, Width: 163mm, Height: 151mm ★Wheelbase: 239mm (L) ★Tire Width/Diameter (Front & Rear): 26/60mm ★Tread (Front & Rear): 138mm ★Monocoque Frame ★Shaft-Driven 4WD ★3-Bevel Differential Gears ★2-Piece Steering Tie-Rod ★4-Wheel Double Wishbone Suspension ★Front & Rear Friction Dampers ★Gear Ratio = 9.5:1 ★Type 540 Motor
Based around a tough monocoque frame with integrated gearboxes, this compact 4WD chassis gives a thrilling drive whether you take it on road or flat dirt surfaces. It features a rear-mounted motor, with gear-driven rear wheels and a propeller shaft taking power to the front. Both front and rear gearboxes have differential gears. The battery pack location in the chassis center secures excellent balance, while 4-wheel independent double wishbone suspension employs friction dampers. Off-road capable M-05Ra chassis uprights and hub carriers, plus rally block tires are also included.

Hello Mark, your channel has got me back into rc cars after all these years, my first car as a kid back in the early 80s was a grasshopper, that was all my parents could afford back then. Only problem I've got now is finding spaces for all these cars I couldn't afford back in the day lol. Thanks for the videos.

That was some precision work, especially the brush-painting while avoiding the edges of the lenses. The stickers were challenging too - those fiddly ones that line the return around the headlights must've seemed daunting! If there's one thing I've learned, from watching you apply stickers, it's that the judicious application of heat is your friend when it comes to getting the vinyl to conform to complex curves. The spotlights look excellent, as do the blue stickers on the rear end. I hope Rob is able to help you capture some footage of the Escort in action soon!

Hiya matey. Sorry I forgot to come back and finish watching this at the weekend. Anyway you have done a top job as always. Tamiya have included some really nice details on this. Love the lights and spot lights. So I know you explained about ohm's law before but is the basic idea that because the LEDs are in series it drops the voltage for each one to an acceptable level? The pre wired led sets that I buy are in parallel but with a resistor on each one. Would be cheaper to do what you are doing and buy a big bag full of LEDs. You should be able to run this thing in the dead of night with all those lights on! Enjoy the Easter break and hope you get Rob to come out and play. I see that you have another vid up so see you over there. Cheers 😁
@MarkBryanRC
@MarkBryanRC 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Pete, never any worries my friend! Thanks for the top comment again. Yep, you got it in one - each LED drops about 2.5v so 2 in series = 5v, ideal for the power output from the receiver. So you don't need a resistor. I've done quite a few like this and they are all still working OK. Definitely cheaper to buy a job lot of LEDs, works out to just a few pence each. Haha, yeah, the 6 LEDs on the front are pretty bright! Happy Easter to you too, matey - have a good 'un! :))

Hi Mark, well once again an absolute masterclass in the art ( and it is an art ) of applying Tamiya stickers. That in places looked like a total nightmare, especially around the 7:40 mark where the sticker went into the front light recess. It's one thing applying stickers but then becomes even more challenging when these stickers have to go into depressions, up and over humps and around curves. Wow, you did such a great job with this one and the car is an absolute beauty. Out of interest how many hours did this shell take to complete from start to finish ? It would be interesting to know. Exceptional work mate...👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. Have a good weekend and hopefully get some RC-ing in..🙂🙂.

Hi mate! Yep,as always you hit the nail on the head - these stickers are not for the feint-hearted, even with the number of Tamiya bodies I've done, it still took all of my patience. There is no way I could have got those suckers to conform without Mrs. Bryan's hairdryer! As for how long it took, not entirely sure, and as you know, filming the process slows everything down. But it was an eternity. I spent over 20 hours last week filming and editing the bodywork, but I started the week before! After all that effort it's so good to get a comment like yours. My weekend is going well, just catching some much needed downtime. I hope yours is going well too. Cheers, bud.

Mark, please forgive this mad mad question. Is it possible (with heat) to widen the wheel arches on this flimsy lexan shell...? Oh the window sticker really needs to to inside.. (OCD) I rallied my Mk2 Escort but without the £80,000 BDA engine for obvious reasons.

Hi, it's not a mad question at all! I have used heat to adapt Lexan before, but it's almost impossible to get a smooth and equal finish as the Lexan tends to distort with heat. The only way to widen the arches and achieve a good finish is to add separate pre-formed arches, you should be able to find some generic arches on eBay. For the truly OCD, check out "Mechanic after hours" youtube channel. Here's a link to his Tamiya Escort build where he adds the type of arches I'm on about: kzbin.info/www/bejne/roLUcnaDepyWfLs Haha I know what you mean about the sunstrip!!! Cool you were into rallying, I did a little motocross and motorbike road racing. My dad would love that BDA in his lotus 7 replica!!!

Great vid Mark,how long do you wait to do the decals after painting?.cheers.

Thanks, Col! Well, this one was pre-painted. But if I paint a body, I can put the decals on as soon as the paint is touch-dry, as it's on the inside it doesn't really matter. Cheers!

OMG - THANK YOU SO MUCH! I was in such a rush to try and upload tonight (I only finished building it and filming at 7pm)!!! I'm so tired after the week at work, and I had a few beers as a consolation, that I forgot to edit the title from the last episode! You are my saviour, my friend! Cheers! Argh, Mark, the stickers are always so nerve wrecking for me, even to watch on video! But I have to say it really was worth it, it's a beautiful car! I especially like the front, all the effort with the LEDs really paid off, very cool! I do like that Mk2 Escort, I had two Mk3's myself and they just didn't have that same charm to them. Yeah, as always on a Saturday morning, thanks for the good entertainment, and have a great weekend there, my friend!

Hi Mads, I can tell you that my nerves were tested during the application of some of those stickers! Glad you like the Escort, I agree the front end is the best part, too. Also, I wasn't a fan of the Mk3 either, a backward step by Ford I think! Thanks for the great comment and a smashing weekend to you too!
