Those Northeast hardwoods really put on a show in the fall. Cool area to watch trains. I'm glad you got to see the the curve.

I believe the train going uphill at the curve was trash cars for hauling garbage. hope you get over to Strasburg to check out the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum and the steam train across the street.

We didn't have time to do Strassburg. Hopefully, we can return in the not too distant future and see more of the state.

That low belly car is used to haul really heavy objects like giant transformers. I think they also use them to haul nuclear containment vessels.

I'd love to see something like that on the move!

I can tell you guys that a pair or PRR T1 steam engine tenders sacrificed their trucks so that car could have the trucks you see on it. They are probably the only remaining T1 trucks that were not scrapped. Not sure on that one. But I am sure they are T1 tender trucks. I can also tell you the car is called the "Queen Mary". It was designed to haul large generators and there are pictures of it on the Internet doing just that. Just search PRR Queen Mary to find them.

Hey Mark! I wish I knew you were there that day. I was 200 yards west of the park on the hillside. I had a red rain jacket on. The first train was 63V, municipal waste. Then an office car special. The coal train, actually 2 trains combined, was NS 590. The train you filmed from the parking lot was 64K, loaded ethonol. All the locos on the rear of the trains were SD70ACu's , rebuilt by NS from Union Pacific SD90 MAC's. I could have taken you to some really great locations on and over the mountain. Great job on all your videos, been a subscriber for a while now. Keep up the great work!

Thanks. We thought about trying to get above it, but being unfamiliar with the area, we decided it was good enough. It would have been nice to meet you!

Very cool video from a neat area. We see you seen the smelly garbage train go past. Enjoyed watching Mark and you brought back memories from our trip out there last year. Have a great rest of your day.(Steve)

Is there any tuna in Altoona?

I will confirm what narpets said. Some of the time, that unit would be the only car on the consist, maybe a caboose for the security team if it is carrying any DOD stuff.

The stone building is a watchman's shanty and tool house built around 1900

Train with UP loco is eastbound. All trains that have helpers on the end are manned helpers.
@MarkClayMcGowanКүн бұрын
We only have manned helpers out here on specific trains in specific areas, so it's an unusual sight for me. Thanks for the info and for checking it out!
@samallan661615 сағат бұрын
I believe they call the stone building the watchman's 'shanty'. A watchman would walk the curve and look out for rocks and other debris which had fallen onto the tracks. If anything was found, there was a signal box or phone in the shack to call the dispatcher and report a problem.

The eastbound unit coal train have DPU's added mid train usually at Conway with manned helpers added West of Johnston before climbing the grade , cut off at Altoona. Some coal trains are destined to the coal fired plants in central Pa or to the port of Baltimore and shipped over seas.
