Great video Mark. I was somebody who used to try and hit those perfect positions at points x y and z, and also suffered from reverse spine. A couple of lessons have sorted me out and I have a functional back swing that has given me better strike and therefore more distance and accuracy. Nobody ever hit the ball with the back swing and just look at the number of different ones on tour. It just proves your point

I love Dans tip on shoulder rotation and position. This is also the reason I started hitting Cobra's one length clubs last season. I basically hit every club exactly the same except my driver and 3 wood. I love it. Makes the game easier!!! My handicap has gone from 12 to 6.5 in one season.

I love that spine angle comment. I used to sway my hips back and my coach got me to "stack my turn over the ball"...the result was more speed and consistency, but my "bad swings" came from that reverse angle. Now that I'm controlling that spine angle PLUS I've eliminated the sway I've gone from hitting a few fairways and greens per round to over 50% on both stats. Great coaching, Gents!

Everything you're talking about at ~7:30 with wrist angles , length of back swing etc describes me to a tee !! and this is what i'm working on this off season. My swing is too long because of all that mentioned, however working those angles out feels terribly wrong lol and hooks for days. But at least my club isn't touching my shoulder during my back swing lol Depth, also working to add depth. Great Video

when trying to learn to open my body up more I started the reverse pivot like crazy. Started to envision my right leg/hip as a screwdriver (righty-tighty) to keep the weigh back. Lefty-loosey weight shift/hip turn to the left starts the downswing.

Back swing thought, hmmmm. I'm a natural lefty that plays golf right handed, all my strength timing and feel is in my left side, arm, forearm and hand. Take away swing thought, I think of that spot two inches about my belly button, I take that spot and my clubhead back at the same time, with a very weak left hand grip to and at the top I want no cupping at all in the left hand. Still very flexible at 67 I think of a three quarter backswing which actually gives me a full shoulder turn and almost parallel at the finish of the backswing, at the top I plant the left heel and let the hands and arms drop, then swing and rotate hard to the ball, and with a weak left hand grip I hit a fade from left to right..Mostly along those lines. Really good video post Mark, thanks.

Here’s one, that a lot of people surprisingly need; If your backswing is faster than your downswing, you really really really need a lesson..... I think of my backswing as something to stabilise me giving me the best chance I can to make good contact, not necessarily something I need to hit positions with, however my poor backswing with some reverse spine tilt has got me in a fair bit of trouble with my back and caused a pretty serious injury, Dan touched on it in tip number 2 and Mark in tip 4, turning behind the ball 👌🏼
@rossharrison896 жыл бұрын
Had a tendency to slice too many shots and simple thing of having a softer grip with a better wrist angle really helped, as per your video. Another point was the take away for me, feeling as though I am keeping the club faced close for as long as possible, when in reality it's following the correct rotation for my grip. Great video as ever.

I don't always know what is going on with my swing. A lot of the this I hit a small draw. However, when driving I tend to slice it, fade it slightly off target or top it off the tee. I think these tips will help along with the aiming tips in you other video. Gotta get to the range!!!

Tip my backswing!!! Love this. Many ways to really start, but gotta get to the delivery you desire. I have such a bad habit lately of getting that driver up in the backswing and NEVER trust my hands when it feels like the head is dropping. I subconsciously re-grip up there as I start the downswing... low pull hooks every time... I need to take this video to the range and remind myself of that last part in the video.

Great wisdom as always - I think there is an element of the phycological to the backswing - does it make you feel that you will hit a good shot. Two different backswings, same result but one feels right and gives confidence. Possibly due to watching what most Pros do and getting an idea of what is "correct"?
@devinwright1316 жыл бұрын
You asked about backswing feels/triggers. For me I know I'm going to hit it well when, at the "top" of my backswing, I feel the weight of the club resting on my cupped trail hand in combination with a tall yet weighted feeling in my feet. From there I trust that I can load hard, turn hard, and hold my wrist angles through the swing. Without that feeling at the top I know that I tend to throw my angles and matchups go all to hell. And although swings with various clubs are naturally different, this feeling is true for me from chipping to driving with the exception of bunker shots and high chips/pitches when I want to use more of the bounce and add loft.
@jamesharrison50046 жыл бұрын
Great stuff Mark. Full appreciation for your knowledge that we are all individual swingers of the club and any coaching needs to be tailored to individuals. I've tried things that other pros have laughed at and poo pooed as not being 'the way' but if it delivers the results I want where is the issue? I think a lot of pros want to make us all 'pros' but 99.9% of us will never be that. We all have a natural swing at the end of the day and unless you're someone like Faldo who has the time and resources to rebuild a whole new swing then we will have to deal with the swing we've been dealt.

I'd LOVE to see what you chaps would do to my pals game. He has a 110mph swing speed, but is crippled by a massively inconsistent face/SLICE and a high flight. I bet he could add 40-50 yards average to his drives easily with a good bit of coaching.
@keithmancinelli31706 жыл бұрын
My newest backswing thought (after a proper lesson) is to take the club back with my shoulders/chest. Apparently, I was very wristy, which was leaving my club face extremely open from the start, and somehow it also cause my hips to still be in the way at the transition. After the change, the club face is in a better spot, and there is a dramatic change (on camera) at the amount of space between my hands and my waist. Now I have a better starting position (at the top of the backswing) with both my club face and the spacing for a proper downswing.

My back swing feels right when I don't overswing. Reference points as such. Club outside the hands a smidge at first parrarel. Then stand the club up so the handle points between my feet and ball. And finally. A tiny "Crossfield Rev" and lay the shaft down as much as I can. These thoughts Fixed my slice. #Lowerhandleonthedownsing

I find it interesting that you also say "over swinging doesn't affect impact", the reason why I'm working on my backswing (it being so long, poor wrist angles) is for impact and better face control.

Mark, I didn't quite understand what you meant when you were in Dan's studio and were talking about right and left hand dominance. I, for one, am left handed but swing right. To me it makes perfect sense that my dominant hand is at the top of the club where it can direct it as needed. It never made sense to me that a right handed player was to have his right hand "along for the ride" as so many instructors have taught. Am I missing something? Btw, it was so great to see Coach smiling and flashing that million watt smile!

I've always felt that with even a rudimentary understanding of ball flight laws, and a VERY clear picture of how you want your shot to go.. your backswing will sort itself out. Your brain is intelligent enough to make your body do whatever you tell it to... but it's not so great when you try focusing on positions instead of swinging into a picture.
@jb-golf0075 жыл бұрын
my swing coach says my overswing "pulls" me off the ball (causes me to lose my spine angle). swinging shorter has helped me with contact/strike. so, for me, it was the negatives that overswing introduced that forced me to learn to stop.
@mikegraham63086 жыл бұрын
Great content Mark- one question slightly off topic- I see you practicing your chipping a lot- but on the video when faced with a shot like you practice you would definitely putt it. I would too- a bad putt over a bad chip. But I can generally putt them fairly well- but my partners say “it’s not golf” I’m still shooting to an5/6 hc so not sure it’s such a problem?!

Mike Graham haha my mate will put from 30 yards up the fairway it’s a topic that causes a lot of piss taking. He consistently puts it to gimme range and holes quite few so who is actually laughing. Great video. The backswing is something I need to work on. In my case with the irons my teaching pro is making me stand closer to the ball and more upright. It has definitely improved the quality of strike but now I am struggling to control a draw/hook: more with the longer irons than the short ones. My guess is that I need to have a much more upright backswing and that requires me to change habits of decades. Another visit to teaching pro is required - wish me luck!

As a sufferer from the poor wrist angles and losing the club out of the hand a bit at the top of the backswing, does this result in the breaking of forces in the downswing and therefore loss of distance? Obviously strike is king but I still feel I can get into the 'good positions' at impact through the ball even with those poorer wrist angles. Great vid gents as always 👍
