My thoughts? I'm afraid it can't be helped. The sheer amount of forum posts, KZbin videos and paid trolls pushing agenda (yes, they DO exist) is beyond repair. My advice? STOP reading forums, STOP following KZbin channels that solely focus on gear, and START putting more time in the field. Landscape photographer channels are the best choice, since they are the ones who talk about gear the least (Heaton comes to mind).

Obviously the camera manufacturers are partly responsible for some people's belief that new equipment makes better photos. But youtubers are also responsible when they have topics like Sony kills Canon and Nikon. Or "Has the newest Canon DLSR shown that Sony has fallen behind". These things tend to make people doubt their equipment. Your presentation is clearly on track. Do photography rather than do equipment. I certainly advocate this. I think the lesson and travel are great recommendations.

People ... Especially new people who is getting into photography need to know n understand those ads video n awesome pic posted online or on magainze are usually all edited. People tend to believe or take it as " if i got the same gear. I could get the same kind of images" n that alone is a huge.. Huge mistake. Thats the problem. ... Most (big) KZbinrs ARE paid / sponsored salesmen of the industry so I would not separate them.
@jeffreyhawker90425 жыл бұрын
How to separate the wheat from the chaff? I've actually invested in a number of courses (Jimmy Chin) and books (Scott Kelby, Bryan Peterson). Some of the courses are a complete waste, they are good photographers, but not teachers, the courses are all over the place (lack structure) and tend to be expensive. You can get a lot of the same info on youtube, but you have to search and have an element of luck. Books are more structured, having gone through the editorial process, have teaching points and a margin to place notes and ideas. I think at the end of the day, shoot, practicing what you have learnt, analyze you photos critically, and shoot some more, striving to improve. Look at lots of pictures critically, why is it that you like a particular photo? Some things are naturally photogenic (The Watchman at Zion National Park), some things are pretty, but just not photogenic. Like anything, you have to master your skill, and in this case a large part of that is your equipment. Some equipment is vital to achieve your end goals, I can blur the background with f 1.8, I can't with the stock 5.6 lens that came with the camera. But for most of us, it's not the equipment that limits our photography, it's our mastery of it, our eye for composition and the final product (post-processing), which is exactly what you are saying.

I agree, to a point. When I upgraded from my 12 year old camera, my images instantly improved. The newer features alone made it possible to get images that I wouldn't have been able to before. Things like live view and an articulated screen meant more varied images and more often in focus. Upgrading from my also 12 year old kit lens that was soft at any focal length/aperture also instantly improved the image quality of my photos. Of course I'm talking about upgrading "old" equipment not just moving up the newest version of whatever you've been shooting with. I think if I'm disappointed with the quality of the images coming out of your camera, the last thing I should do is spend $2000 going somewhere and get photos that I'll be disappointed with. First, I need to find out what's causing my disappointment. Is it the gear that just can't handle what I'm are trying to do with it? Maybe it's my technique in the field or in post that isn't achieving the result I'm expecting. Or maybe my expectations are too high and that $2000 is best spent on some counseling to help adjust my perception of reality. Like I said, I mostly agree. ;~)

Another bit of advice is to get out of your rut. I just ran across a set of videos on Boudoir Photography, which offered really interesting tips on posing models. To get out of your landscape rut, try asking other hikers to pose for you briefly, and use those boudoir poses -- back arched against the wall, hands touching the wall overhead, for example -- and shoot a silhouette of the hiker against a tree in the same pose. Now try it at night silhouetted against the milky way. Something new and fun! There was a very sage comment made by a scientist some decades ago that rarely does anyone invent anything new - the great advances come from combining known things and techniques in new ways. Same for photography. Same for your excitement and growth. If anyone tries milky way landscape boudoir photography, please send me some shots. :-)

Mark - I do agree for 2 of the 3 options-- I think there is so much free content on KZbin and elsewhere, that buying tutorials, maybe a waste of funds.. Travel and workshops is where I would spend my money. I have attended 2 workshops in the last 15 months and have one for this year and they have been absolutely a great way to learn and have a lot of fun. My only issue is that they seem to sell out so fast. The 2 companies I have gone with, are sold out until 2022. I have traveled a fair amount with my spouse over the last couple of years, but that makes photography hard sometimes.

Gear can make things easier to do. I just recently got a giant benro tripod, because I'm constantly want more height. Or my camera to be in a higher position. It helps immensely, because it opens up compositions that were just not available before. I also got a new body ( larger sensor) which saves me from having to stitch photos and exposure bracket as much. It also cuts down on the banding I was seeing in some of my photos. I live in Florida and there is just endless places to explore in just an hour radius. So I dont really need to spend money on travel, besides gas I guess. So I would say it depends. For beginners I agree, gear is not going to help, but as you get more advanced gear can really make things easier, and sometimes that's what you need. ... next purchase is a canoe, so I can access more places.

And happy about it.

Crop sensor has so many advantages for landscape, due to depth of field and weight, stop upgrading the gear, buy what works for you, and invest in books, or trips that get you outside and shooting. I think more people need to see this kind of video, always chasing the latest and greatest.
@Spartacus19755 жыл бұрын
Very well said. Maybe I describe how I deal with this topic. First I see some gear that attracts my attention. Then I lead a conversation with myself, there is a pro- and contra-position. The pro-side has to convince myself that I need a certain gear, in most cases the con-side wins because I can do all I need with the gear I already possess or it´s simply to expensive. But sometimes I can convince myself because my workflow would become faster/easier or I would achieve something in photography I can´t do with my old gear. A good example is a new telephoto lens that allows me to photograph ibexes, eagles and other animals that are quite away (impossible with my old lenses). My advice: Learn to control your gear and practice your photography!

less is more. I significantly improved my photos, when I sold my APSC camera with three zoom lenses, tripod, flash and a huge amount of gear. I got a full frame camera with a 50 mm prime. Back to basics. I then learned again to see. To see around me, to zoom with my feet, to adapt my shooting style to the constraints, but also to the new opportunities. A f 1.8 lens with IBIS opens more opportunities at night than I lost during day time. Now I love my photos again, and when they are great, I feel so proud. Travelling? I learned to walk. In my garden. In the vicinity. In the local park. Just a light camera. I learned to take time. Not to shop for more gear, more filters, more gadgets. Yes, I know: 90% plus will disagree and continue searching on videos for more gear to buy. But my approach worked fine for me and I will continue this strange path. But the most important point: there are thousands of ways to become happy and to enjoy. Search for your individual personal way

Yeah but it is fun upgrading equipment when you can! I worked my way from a Nikon film camera to a D40, then the D300S, the D600 and then to a D810 which I currently own along with a variety of lenses that cover from 16mm to 500mm and assorted filters. I’m at that stage where I don’t crave anything new and just try to get out and make some good images that I can print and hang on the wall on the occasion that I capture one good enough to do so. That is one thing I would recommend for people to spend some money on is a decent quality printer and print out their work. There is just something about seeing an image that you’ve taken in print form versus on a computer screen. Good advice Mark.

I learned postprocessing my photos in Photoshop and Lightroom by watching a lot of tutorials and tips and tricks on youtube. This way I developed my own workflow for editing my images the way I imagined them to be when I took the shot. For the photography part, it's all about spending time outside and put in the effort, so you will be able to improve yourself. Spending money on lenses and bodies is something which I did only when I knew for sure it would benefit my photography. For me, in the end it all comes down to 3 things: Knowing how to handle your equipment, being familiar with the subject of your photography and being able to process your image. If either of these 3 things is lacking, then you know where to invest your money in.

Temptation is always there to get the best of gear in any discipline, whether it's photography, music or whatever, because you will get better results from the high end kit. But you will only get the best out of that high end equipment if you know how to use it, and that's where your advice makes sense to me. A guy learning to play piano on a Steinway is not going to better than the guy learning on an entry level Yamaha. The Steinway will only make a difference when you know how to play it. ✌️

Hey Mark. Again another good video. I subscribe to about 20 photography/lightroom/photoshop channels. (Yours is my favourite, by the way.) Actually more now since you showed us your own personal favourite channels, that you follow. (And some of those are really, really good!! Thank you again for that) And every single one of the KZbin vloggers/bloggers seems, to me, to be making the same mistake. (You are included). When I first started watching these channels, the videos would come out once every few weeks, and they were eagerly anticipated, a bit like a new Beatles album, but just lately there seems to be a rush to get more and more videos out there, as fast as is humanly possible. Competition for viewers must be very intense. There is one guy at the moment doing a video a day!! It's a 30-day photoshop course, and admittedly, it's pretty good. But I can't keep up with it. I have a life to live away from youtube. You have been very consistent with one new video every week, but that rate of production is unsustainable. For the next 2 years, you are going to have to come up with a hundred or more ideas for videos. You are going to start repeating yourself very soon, and then you will start to lose subscribers. It's a bit like subscribing to a Photography magazine, for tips and how-tos, for more than a year. Very soon you realise that its the same stuff you read last year, with maybe a different angle. You have probably heard of the saying "Quality not quantity". I assume KZbin pays by the number of videos, or number of views per video, not the quality. Actually, I have no idea how you-tube pays but I would like you to be around in a few years time. Please do not take this the wrong way. Love your work. Any thoughts on this?

Madcat100 Thanks so much - that means a lot, so thank you for that! That’s really the main reason I only upload once per week, I’d rather focus on quality as opposed to quantity and trying to upload 3-4 videos per week would drowned me.

Great video Mark. I suffer from GAS at times (I am literally awaiting delivery of the Sony FE 24-105mm as I type). Travel is certainly one alternative that resonates for me - even driving a couple of hours and staying in a cheap motel so that I can capture a sunset and/or sunrise has helped me tremendously. I think it's a cyclical process, as some posters have suggested. There comes a point where you become limited by the technical capability of some kit components (aperture, ISO performance, weather resistance for example) and that sparks a switch to gear investment again. I think the trap to avoid - as you imply - is to assume that buying new gear will in itself make you a better photographer. It will just allow you to stretch your skill development further.
@MarkDenneyPhoto5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Daniel! I suffer from the same as well - I love new gear, but after spending thousands over the years I now better understand when I “need” new gear versus “wanting” new gear.

Nice to hear the basics again. If you learn all the basics and use the correct techniques in camera and post processing then you will be a better photographer. In fact I've heard time and time again of people taking woeful photos with a d850 yet people with a d3400 are taking better photos because they took the time to learn the correct techniques.

This is great advice Mark. Although not the same thing exactly, I haven’t been out shooting since 1st January. Why? Because I’ve been taking the time to read up, watch videos, critically assess my back catalogue, and come up with a list of no more than 10 things i plan to start doing differently. I only took up the hobby serious at the back of 2018 and bought lots of good gear which will stand me well, but ultimately it comes down to technique and approach i.e. skill and you can’t buy that. Practice is one thing, but if you’re practicing the same bad technique or habit over and again it becomes hard to unlearn it. So I’m taking stock at the moment, and saving money on fuel. I see it as an investment in its own right. I have loads of reading material now and videos etc. The next step will be a local workshop - a weekend - or something, when i have the opportunity for someone much more experienced and whose work i admire, to give me pointers and spot things i could do better. That would be far more sensible than resolving the gear question I’ve had in my head for months, which has been: do i get, for astrophotography/Milky way a 14mm prime e.g. the Samyang, or do i stick to my canon 16-35mm f2.8 and work with that in a better way? Love your videos. You present really well and i have trust in you!

I have only one lens, a 18-250 zoom Sigma on my Canon camera. That is all of have had for years. The reason is, when I travel I don't want to be lugging a lot of heavy lenses/camera gear. Somehow I have not gotten my wife on board to be my sherpa. I really enjoy your teaching style, content and the calm way you have it organized so that even someone as limited as myself can learn. How long have you supported your family with photography. Financial to Photography is quite a change. I went from engineering to Insurance. You can see the correlation. I live in St George UT with 5 Nation Parks within 2 hours. It is amazing. I did not particularly car for your Orton video. One of the ones I really enjored was 'THIS COMPOSITION TOOL EATS UP THE RULE OF THIRDS'.

As someone who started with a micro 4/3 for video work and transitioned to loving astro and landscape photography, I did feel like I needed a new system. Instead of spending a fortune on a new system I found a great deal on a Nikon d800 with a 24-120 and 14mm f2.8. The rest of my budget is for travel once the Milky Way core comes back up into the northern hemisphere. I also bought a few astro courses. So I think you hit the nail on the head for the majority of people. My Panasonic just had too much noise even with my f1.4 leica lens.

Mark, a great main point and good suggestions. But from my experience, whether to make gear purchases top priority depends so much on where you are in your growth. I shot with APSC cameras for over three years (Nikon D5200, Sony a6000, Canon 80D, primarily the latter), and shot a lot for an amateur. I really like low-light shooting, including a fair amount of astro. Last summer I acquired a full-frame Canon 6D, and absolutely loved the ability to shoot at high ISO--even in daytime I found it really helpful (eg, when you need substantial depth of field on a cloudy day, along with a fairly fast shutter). Then I moved up to a good used Canon 5D4. I absolutely love it. The files are so much easier to work with. It focuses better. It is wonderfully ergonomic. I am taking better pictures with it. But that's my own peculiar situation. I am blessed to live in an area of abundant natural beauty, so I really don't need to spend much on travel. And I get a lot of good info for free on KZbin. Also, I'm lucky in friendship with a couple of good photographers, who have been informative, either directly or indirectly. Having said all that, you have raised my interest in tutorials and workshops, and now that I've got gear that cuts the mustard for the kind of shooting I most enjoy, I'll start saving for that.

I see people trading equipment frequently and often wonder why? Still, I do get tempted from time to time. My a6000 is 3 years old now, and I am feeling the urge to buy new, but for landscape photography, the fancy focus improvement don’t do much, and the newer Sony APSC camera still seem to be using pretty much the same sensor. I do take photos of birds etc, and that might be what finally makes me upgrade.

Thanks for all these wonderful videos. My wife and I have recently gotten into landscape photography and have found your videos to be of immense help. I have a question, which perhaps you could do a video on. What does it mean to have integrity in Landscape Photography? I see these beautiful pictures but know when I go to see these places they will look nothing like the photos I have seen. When we edit photos what should we try to present to the viewer? How it actually appears, or how I want it to appear? It is a question I struggle with. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Some great advice for sure and chasing new gear just to have the latest and greatest is BS. It especially being pushed by so many in regards to mirrorless switch from DSLR. There is some great mirrorless no doubt, but Canon coming out with EO-R does not make a Canon 5dM4 or even older 1 D series less if it is in the hands of someone that knows what they are doing and has learned from other as well as their own. Many of KZbin photographers that I have followed over the years and sadly some that I liked seem to start follow in with pushing gear more and more and less of showing good photography. As far as workshops go, there is some good ones no doubt, but many are a waste of money and sadly so many find out the hard way after they have spent a few thousand dollars to only get corralled with others taking the same photo, getting very little from the organizers and even more and more of paying to be there while the leaders concentrate more on getting another KZbin Vlog up to promote their workshops instead of focusing on really helping the people that attend and letting them people advance or better their way of shooting verse trying to get them to be a clone of the leaders. Tutorials are hit and miss also when one pays for some, I have a few that have been great, but have even more that was waste of money and nothing that I could not get on KZbin free or even better just going out and practicing and improving from practice. I prefer to go with books that help and even though they are getting less and less out there, going to a brick and mortar bookstore and checking them out before buying, sometimes even (hold on for some readers may not even realize such are still out there) the good ole public library. You have an excellent channel and a dedicated follower and keep up the good work. Overall best advice is get out there and take pictures and learn from your mistakes and keep an open mind of tips from others. Photo clubs are probably the best thing to join if you want to get good tips from fellow like minded men and women IMHO (as long as they do not get an elitists' attitude within the club or the dreaded political views).

While I do agree with your statements, I think there is some increased creativity with a lens purchase that is different than what is currently in your collection. Up until about a year ago I though landscape photography was all about going super wide and capturing everything. After purchasing a more telephoto lens and some getting inspiration from youtube, I can honestly say my landscape photography is the best it's ever been.
@MarkDenneyPhoto5 жыл бұрын
In that instance I have to agree with you. My investment in the Sony 100-400 really enabled me to capture something I otherwise didn’t have the equipment to do.

I have a Sony Nex6 and it's my first camera since 2017. I was able to buy two other lenses with different focal lengths. I can't buy other gears except for some accessories. Though my gear is so simple my aim is to challenge myself with the gear I have to make better photos day after day. I have learned many things just through youtube and I improved my level. It's not the gear which makes the picture but it's the one using that gear.

Point well taken, but with one important caveat: that the gear you already own is adequate and capable of doing what you need it to do. Would you shoot on a flimsy $30 tripod? Of course you wouldn't, and you should invest in a better tripod. If your goal was to sell large, gallery-style prints, would you shoot with a ten-year-old Canon Rebel? No, and you should invest in a modern high-res body. If you shoot wildlife, and your only lens is the 18-55mm kit lens, should you drop $2k on a workshop or on a 100-400mm (or similar) lens?

I definitely agree with regards to upgrading gear. There are occasions when I think new gear can help though, I'm looking to add a proper wide angle lens to my bag (15mm kind of range) for those specific shots where you really accentuate the foreground. So if the gear is going to give you more options with your photography in can be worthwhile. But just upgrading to the latest model of a camera or to full frame just because you think you should is definitely not the way to go, your suggestions are much better ideas.

Well, I feel that some parts of my camera are holding me back from getting results that I want -- photos taken in low light are often very noisy, even with fast lenses. That's making me look at getting a new camera body, and in addition perhaps some lenses to go with that body (depending on what body I will eventually get!) Regardless I agree that it's not the camera as such which will make my photography better.
