I've been in the Z system since 2018. I started with z6. I recently upgraded to Z7 II. Prior to the Z6 I had the Sony a7r III. It took nice pictures but I did not enjoy using it because of the ergonomics and the shitty non-touch menu system. This is not the case with the Z cameras. The Z glass is some of the sharpest I've seen. The lineup is building quickly. Completely satisfied with the Z system. I do get sick of hearing people dismiss it because its AF is not class leading like that's the only way to rate a camera, or shoot photographs.

Recently I have been using my Z7ii with Nikon’s 50mm 2.8 Macro and Nikon’s ES-2 film digitizer to scan slides and negatives from when I shot film. The results have been extraordinary. It’s been so much fun I am now thinking of breaking out my film cameras for more shoots, and going to estate sales to look for slides and negatives in search of the next Vivian Maier. It really does boil down to what is the best combination of price, functionality, and ease of use to let me get the job done. For me the Z series fits the bill for a lot of what I want to do.

Great review! I gladly second it on several specific counts, and agree with the message that enjoying the system you use is a big part of the photographic arts. I recently turned to full-frame mirrorless as my 'just right' solution after shooting Fuji GFX 100 for almost 2 years. Jaw-dropping IQ and very malleable DR, just never bonded with using it for some reason I cant quite pinpoint. Ended up grabbing my Nikon Z7 more often because of lens choices, better AF, closer focusing lenses, and lighter kit -OK so maybe I can pinpoint it. Nikon is producing some truly outstanding Z mount lenses. The company's design philosophy and direction makes for an enjoyable and productive shooting experience and they are building a comprehensive system. So, I've adopted Nikon Z-mount as my primary 'do everything I need, plus some things I might need someday' system. Perhaps as a matter of some personal indulgence, I also pair two Leica SL lenses with a Lumix S1R. I think the 3d render of these is rather magical, but consider this as a bit of a luxury as the overall IQ of some Nikon combos come very close. If I could keep only one system it would be Nikon, but the L-mount alliance has a lot going for it with the ability to use SL lenses as a key differentiator for me. Plus the S1R has fantastic button, dial, and knob design and a great user menu. It is like a full frame version of the Fuji XT cameras in a lot of ways. But the Leica/Lumix combo serves a niche similar to how I was using the Fuji GFX, especially using that killer 187mp pixel shift function behind SL primes. The Nikon Z works extremely well for all other scenarios.

I am so pleased to watch a video Hugh, that does something most don't do - hail the Z7II for what it is, not to mention the outstanding lens quality. I shoot film with Leica IIIF, M3, R5 & R7 and I love them all, the IIIf especially because it belonged to my Father, before his passing. For Digital I shoot Z6II & Z7II, having the initial offerings first - these new bodies are stunning and the lenses are all optically outstanding, as you say for the money where they find themselves in the market place. As you so rightly say, it's about use case and, after all, we are all marmite

Im seriously considering the z7ii to replace the lot . With the Z , I can (in theory) shoot in crop mode to gain the extra reach of the apsc format for wildlife , or crop in post with the higher pixel count. I will also have all the advantages of full frame. I actually bought the 6D for landscapes and ended up shooting portraits... and after selling lenses I never used I switch between a sigma 35mm f1.4 art and the 135mm. For me Nikons bodies are so comfy in the hands.. it almost feels like it's meant to be in my hands. Although their Z lens lineup isn't huge, the pricing is SOOOOOO much better than canons and the results from images I've seen look amazing. Everyone trashes their autofocus compared to the likes of Sony or Canon but coming from a 6D which has almost zero focus points and terrible auto-focus, anything will blow my socks off. I think I am currently leaning towards the z7ii.. something about the files and colours that come out of the Nikon files just looks better than that or both Sony and Canon. Not to mention good pricing and great build quality. The biggest draw to the likes of Sony I guess is the superior lens selection from third parties like Tamron - who are making some killer lenses.

Hi Hugh! My take-home from this video is that there really are no wrong choices right now. Especially for street, all systems are "good enough" (for, as they say, 99% of us 99% of the time). As much of a camera gear geek I am, the whole circus gets tiring sometimes. I know gear videos probably do very well on YT, but I'd love to see some videos from you about your philosophy on street photography, techniques you use, reviews of greats of the field etc.

Claudia's images are spectacular, the best part of this excellent review. Been getting the feeling that the Nikon system is underrated and, after using even the original Z6 in the camera store, I would probably go Nikon if switching from Fuji to full frame.

I guess the live preview on the SL cameras should be available with the SL3, and I also guess that camera was delayed by the pandemic. Who knows, the boffins of Wetzlar may even include better autofocus. I had an SL2 and the 35mm F2 APO lens and I agree that the image quality was outstanding. And the feel of the SL2 in the hand, with its Futz-free (™) usability were wonderful. But, in my particular use case, autofocus is a requirement, robust and predictable enough for animals in motion. So, long story short, I now have a Nikon Z7II and Z9. Of the Leica lenses, the one that I miss the most is the 24-90 vario elmarit as a true workhorse but nothing I have ever used from any manufacturer could fully compare with the 35mm F2 APO. I hope you continue to enjoy the SL2/35mm APO combo.

I’m watching this in August 2022. Nikon rumours about a Nikon z6 iii and a new camera. I’m in to upgrading my existing camera for something better. I thought about a D780 because it uses F mount lenses. It does have the capability of the z6 but only in live view. Jumping to Sony A7 IV & Canon R5, and reviews on the z6ii, all the complaints from various youtube channels. Its like watching cartoons as a kid and being bombarded to get certain toys or cereals. I decided not to get the D780. You discussed every camera on the market and had them in hand. As a Leica user and saying what you like is much better than what you don’t like about the Nikon Z7 ii and the lenses. It is quite a compliment considering the quality of Leica. The only manufacturer you didn’t mention was Hasselblad. But that camera is in a whole other world. I cant put money toward a Leica but i am considering the z6ii or z7ii. As far as F mount glass is mentioned, there is the FTZ adapter which opens me up to Sigma and Tamron glass which isn’t available yet for Z Mount. Great video as always.
@3BMEP2 жыл бұрын
Of course, we’ve been hands on with Hasselblad as well, but yes: it is a different proposition. I think the Z7 II or III (Z8?) will work really well for you!

For the photowork I do at a zoo the camera failed me and I went back to a Nikon D500. The AF was unreliable and often started ok and then grabbed the background/random stuff. I missed many key shots because the AF is not good for my use case. If your doing static stuff sand landscapes it fine but clearly not a camera for fast action and animals., Had mine for 3 days before I sent it back. The Nikon D500 is 300% better. Hoping they get the Z9 right because I'd love to have a silent shooting mode.

I have always wondered why the major camera brands advertise their wares with mediocre photos at best in so many cases. Such is the case with many of the photos Nikon chose in their ads for the z series. Anything in the photos that you used in the video would have been better. Holy cow Hugh and Claudia, you are photographers. You have proven again that the camera is only the essential tool. I want to get better at my craft after seeing more of your work. OMG HUGH!!! I swear you’re the virtual mentor/uncle I’ve never had! (Apologies early for the long winded comment) Ok, so….. As I was starting my “Professional Journey in transitioning from amateur/enthusiast I was pretty committed to Nikon for a plethora of reasons (ergos, colors and potential of the Z-Mount being largest in industry and what could be done to utilize it with both bodies and even more important, lenses. Your “Last lens you’ll ever buy” on the 50mm f/1.8 sealed the deal and confirmed my decision to go all in building out my Nikon system. A Z50, Z6ii & Z7ii later, along with a bag full of the 1.8 primes and trinity 2.8 zooms, I thought I was set. Love Love Love the Z7ii! BUT WAIT….! I’d always had the “Leica Itch” if you will; and your videos did not help to sooth the itch 😂 In fact only made it worse. So I finally decided to pick up a Q2 and MAN!!! Pardon me but DAMN!!! I haven’t picked up my Nikon’s in weeks!!! I’m currently figuring out how to schedule surgery in a 3rd world country to sell a kidney to get into the M Line 😬. All that to say, Hugh, you’re the man! @@3BMEP thank you for your advice. I think I’m still going to go with the leica. My reason is that I just don’t like the look of Nikonesque crushed blacks (I think they overdo the coatings) and honestly I like a lens with some chromatic aberrations and this is something Leica doesn’t “overcorrect”. Got a chance to work with SL2 recently on a job as a Digital Tech for an advertising campaign. Frankly I was surprised the photographer was showing up with that so I brought my Z7 as a backup. The Leica managed fine for the first half of the first day but we quickly ended up having to switch to the Nikon kit. Handling the camera I was surprised at some of the design choices, the poor battery life and the absurd amount of extra work it takes to do simple things like changing batteries. It made me wonder, who are these cameras even designed for? Clearly not a professional that needs to shoot tethered. Not someone who wants a remotely light or portable settings for travel or street photography. So is it the SL2 just for anyone with disposable income who wants to shoot to card in their home studio? Though most of the teams I work with are mostly Canon with maybe 10% or less Nikon and maybe 1-2 Sony shooters a year -- all those systems make sense to me, but I just don't get the point of the Leica systems.

Great video, although now I am completely perplexed. I am currently in the process of adding a CL to my SL2-S, which might not be the best choice as you point out. Although the weight of any CL kit is hard to match, except by an X-E4. But the XF glass, as you point out, doesn't come anywhere close to the TL glass. Too many good choices :-)

If more people were starting over, say after their entire kit had gone missing, the Nikon Z lens lineup might help increase Nikon ML market share. Sad to say but some might not consider a switch to Nikon based on Nikon's uncertain long term future. Being an older guy, that might not be as big a consideration 😅 but I'm going to wait a while longer to see if a leap to Nikon makes sense for my future light weight travel kit. If they apply themselves (e.g., diner grained control over HDMI output and AF, use of shutter angle, nail a product showcase feature, learn from Canon’s touch interface on playback, no recording limit), they’ll be in. great shape.
