I am not buying. My current AirPods Max will do the same thing. I would have considered them if they got Lossless Audio ability and manual equalization. But there is nothing in the specs saying that. Beats Studio Pros (to stay in the Apple Ecosystem) are a better alternative for the money. And, as you said, there are other great alternatives with even better sound and lossless capability.

as an airpods max daily user for the past 3 years I'm beyond disappointed with how apple has treated this product, first and foremost theese are "airpods" so all the "airpod" exclusive features u should expect, y Apple has chosen to shun thier most expensive Airpods is baffling, no adaptive audio, no conversation awareness, no new siri interaction, no voice isolation, no personalised volume, no water or dust resistance, Bluetooth 5.0 as opposed to 5.3, H1 chip as opposed to H2, none of the newly announced hearing aid features too, and all of theese features are avaliable on airpods that are almost half the price of theese, it genuinely confuses me what Apple are playing at here?

@@rickd438I looked at the original model AirPods Max when they were released, but in all good conscience given the feature set , or lack there of , I would not buy them. It’s a shame Apple did the bare minimum to this product which could have been so much better imo. I have a couple of other pairs of phones , one Bose set that I have absolutely worn to death, even slept with them on occasion 😊, to the point the ear cups need replacing. I also have some old skull candy phones which are also well worn and showing their age , and probably cost a third of what the Apple phones cost , probably not as good sound wise , but I’m no audio file and they do the job fine for me , have nice easy to use buttons , and battery life seems amazing on them. Apple imo needs to do better on the AirPods Max.

No. I'm gutted, to be honest. I've been waiting for the update for about two years, because I've wanted a pair of these since they came out, even though they're overpriced. But now I really can't hand over that amount of money: the most expensive AirPods now have older technology than the cheapest pair of AirPods. This doesn't make sense.

Just get an XM5, all my devices are Apple products but using a Sony headphone has been one of the smartest technological purchases I’ve made. I mean sure, you can’t get the seamless transition like the AirPods but sound quality, price, etc. all triumph my need for another overpriced, outdated Apple headphones.

@@CH-gt4nj Yep, that's pretty much my Plan B - you don't get the seamless transition between devices, which would be lovely, and the audio pass-through isn't as good (but this isn't a big deal for me - these are headphones to use at home, not having good pass-though is not something I'm going to miss) - but the sound is as good and the ANC is as good - and they're half the price. I love the visual design of the Air Pods Max, and I love the seamless transition, but neither of those things justify paying twice as much as the Sonys. For me it's very simple: I really, really don't like wearing in-ear earbuds, so I don't. All I wanted from Apple was an equivalent to the AirPods Pro 2, but as overear headphones. And I would pay a premium for that. But that isn't what the AirPods Max are.

We have had them from release. Audio sharing is a strong feature. I use them for zoom and the mute function is key. The ANC is the best. I use them for hours every day.

I think the case is a brilliant compact design. It protects the main surface area and I haven’t damaged my pair since I purchased in 2021. The last thing I want is a big clunky enclosed case that won’t fit into my laptop bag.

Anyone that owns a Lightning Aipods Max has ZERO reasons to "upgrade" to USB-C. Why spend $550 just so you can charge with another cable? If you can plug a USB-C cable in, you can surely plug a Lightning cable in for no more than the reason of saving all that money. I honestly hate the fact that they don't have a on/off switch, I started having problems with mine and that's when you wish they had them. They are old and outdated and surely treated this badly by apple means they are not a priority moving forward which to me is reason for concern if I was indeed in the market for new headphones...

I actually ordered both of them because I still can’t decide :( Px8 are better build and what I can read on Reddit better sounding, but I’m so deeply sinked into Apple ecosystem, I’m not sure convenience won’t be a deciding factor tbh. I have momentum 4 and BT switching is pain in the 🍑

@StaagG I believe they sound much better. I find the Max too bright. Good, though not for me. I'll miss the transparency mode as nothing beats the Max, though the Px8 certainly aren't bad in that mode. Best to try both as we all have different tast at the end of the day

I'm not in the apple ecosystem but the Max exists for people like me. I have to wear hearing aids for tinnitus. If I remove them to use in ear type buds (I have pixel buds pro) the sound quality is destroyed. I have a pair of Bose QC 45 which allow me to keep my hearing aids on and enjoy superb quality music.

I’ve had the Beoplay H100’s for about a week now and I love them! They do a great job with immersive Dolby Atmos, giving you that ability to look away from the screen, yet have the audio stay pointed at the content. And I’ve been extremely happy with the ANC and transparency. Finally the sound quality, bass response, sound stage are awesome! Are you going to be reviewing those sometime soon?

i actually really enjoy how if I'm using my macbook or iPad and i get a call it will ask me if i wanna answer it and it will switch to the phone. Very smooth transition and my voice doesn't sound muffled or distorted. Love that!

I purchased my Max a year more ago. I find all of the Apple headphones to offer especially clear and consistent sound. They may not be of audiophile quality but few are. I even like the case. I have a travel case that I purchased for about $35. But for everyday listening, I find the smaller case to be easy to grab and carry. The Max essentially work like the rest of the AirPods in that they sleep in their cases and connect when removed. I do think Apple owes Max and update and would not be surprised if one came along in a year year or so. They need to update the chip, the mics and perhaps add some water resistance. As for cost, we are now seeing wireless headphones priced at $1550 from Bang & Olufsen. $550 is still a lot of money, Apple offers high quality for the money. There are certainly other good offerings for 1/2 to 2/3 the price.

It honestly would have been a better move for them to either silently update them or just not at all. The optics are just bad, there's no excuse for these to not have gained feature parity with the cheaper and much smaller AirPod Pro's... ANC is great, not as good as my AirPods Pro’s but I don’t think you can expect over ears to be as good. Clamping force and comfort are spot on, very comfortable to wear whilst working or walking. Purchased my APM on launch day four years ago and struggled to find a use for them other than when traveling. I use my APP daily. As someone with a shaved head I am left with an indentation from the band and ear cuffs for quite a while whenever I use them which to be honest is one of the main reasons I’ve given up using them.

Apple said very little about the APP2 sound improvement over the original model and yet they are so much better. I think there could be more coming they haven’t said yet, but it also could just be a minor upgrade as is now expected. They also did this with APP2 in the past. I think the Max sound great and I have thousands and thousands in headphones and IEMs. Apple could provide a nice EQ (or an auto EQ) and I don’t think anyone would really need better. They also have the best microphones, but that may just be because it’s closer to the mouth than the APP2. What you’re really getting with those other headphones is simply a different tuning. The drivers and amplifiers used in the Max are really well engineered. Because Apple is such a huge brand, they’re tuning for what their studies show are the most popular frequency response. This common tuning will moreso be for your average listener and not necessarily an audiophile who may want something different.

thank you! this actually really helped me weigh out my options. i started with airpods gen 2 and after a few years they were breaking down. then, i got a pair of airpods pro (can't remember what gen) and have been using those since. however, i was looking forward to an airpod max 2 major update because i find myself being very forgetful of a small tiny case and the pros have been through the wash accidentally a couple times(😅). the update was not what i was expecting in all honesty, it's been about 4 yrs and i expected better. unfortunately, i think i will still be investing in these poorly updated airpods max just because i don't want to give up the easy use of airpods in the apple ecosystem. if anyone else has some opinions, i'm open to hearing them out. i have considered getting the pros, and looking for another over ear headphone (around the same price of if i bought just airpods max), but i just am not sure because the pros aren't what i was looking forward to.

You hit the nail on the head with your comment about the AirPods Pro 2's having more features at half the price. if the AirPods Max is the premium product which warrants a price tag at a ridiculous $550 USD then they should at the very least have all or more features as the AirPods Pro's. I really wanted the AirPods Max update to convince me to buy a pair but when all they did was to change the charging port to USB C and call them "all new AirPods Max" I was convinced they were ripping me off!

I bought mine when they were on sale for $100.00 off the regular price. I loved them. I loved the easy of use, the easy it was to go to transparency mode, the buttons, how quick they pair to Apple products, etc. Unfortunately, I bought the silver ones to match my silver M2 iPad Pro with white Magic Keyboard. I use them when I go to restaurants by myself to watch KZbin and every night to listen to music as I fall asleep. The ear cuffs got so dirty (I bathe every day)! I washed them the best I could. The last time I washed them, I was so frustrated that I washed them with dish soap and ran them under water until they were clean. Needless to say, the stopped working after that. I washed only the ear cuffs, not the whole thing. Still, they won’t even charge. So I will never buy them again, ever! I have Beats Studio Pros, and a paid of Bose 700s and they are great.

How big is the problem with the loss in elasticity of the headband? Can it be replaced?

As some who bought the air pods max in April 2024. So impressed by them. I got the air pods pro 2s for out going. I looked at everything else. The Sonos came close. The Bose cheap for a reason. Not enough base and not enough clarity. Everything else has touch controls for a set headphones that goes over the ear. I would agree with you that sound could be better. But for $550 along with a $35 adapter for 3.5mm audio jack. You can’t beat hear through. Has good physical controls. Better than Bose. I would almost mix with these. If they can solve the latency problem. The noise canceling tech up with big boys. It’s hard to beat those. Unless you compromise like Bose. Or spend even more. I think a guy fstoppers ranked the Bose 45 and 35 mark 2s as the best bang for the buck. Because they did it first. And being not far off but better clarity. The only thing that’s missing for the max is professional support. If apple does a max pro version. Obviously it will cost more. For the land of high end cans the air pods max not that expensive. Not compared to $1500 headphones for audiophiles.

Thanks Mark. After waiting over a year for updated AirPod Max, following the announcement on Monday night I promptly went and ordered a pair of Sonos Ace on sale at Amazon! As much as I love the look of the Max and would appreciate the ease of use within the apple ecosystem that I get with my AirPod Pros, there are too many compromises compared to what I expect from a pair of headphones - On/off functionality, a proper case and the weight of them, and I just don't think they give the value for money compared to other options out there. I'll give the Sonos Ace a go (seem pretty good so far, and being an owner of a Sonos Arc and Ray can take advantage of the audio swap) and see where we are at in a couple of years. I do have the Sennheiser Momentum 4s to fall back on if the Sonos don't work out...

I bought myself the Sonos Ace and I like them a lot. Solid audio, good and up to date codecs, extremely comfortable, USB-C and 3.5 cables included, pretty good ANC and transparency mode, a proper case and… yes… a crappy app with an underwhelming equalizer. But the whole package is very good. And as you mentioned, there are loads of other great and less expensive options. I have no clue what apple was thinking. They certainly lost credibility concerning their commitment to good audio.

Funnily enough, the one major complaint I’ve heard about the Sonos Ace since they launched is in regards to their sound profile. Read a rather concerning amount of comments across different websites and forums of people criticising them for sounding rather anemic/ lacking bass. Put me right off them.

Just bought the first version, and for me, they serve the purpose brilliantly. My primary use is listening to the audio from my “smart” TV, and the APM works brilliantly. Also for music listening: brilliant. Too expensive? Probably, but I’m gonna forget about that and enjoy them.

People I know with the prev airpods max love them. They've improved with updates. I'm wondering whether to get an older version or the new ones. Battery for those who have had it from release say the battery is fine. Second hand they're £325. Case isn't important for the intended use as it's going to be used at fixed locations.

Is there USBC audio in? Can you connect that filmsy Apple’s USBC-jack adapter and listen by wire? Lightning version had this option that required special wire tho.

It needs an on/off switch. So many times it doesn’t wake up. Taking in & out of the “case” & plugging & unplugging the charger to turn them on is a punish. I’m on my 2nd pair & this has always been a problem. The canopy mesh is also soft. Other than that i really like mine

I purchased my Max a year or more ago. I find all of the Apple headphones to offer especially clear and consistent sound. They may not be of audiophile quality but few are. I even like the case. I have a travel case that I purchased for about $35. But for everyday listening, I find the smaller case to be easy to grab and carry. The Max essentially works like the rest of the AirPods in that they sleep in their cases and connect when removed. I do think Apple owes Max an update and would not be surprised if one came along in a year year or so. They need to update the chip, the mics and perhaps add some water resistance. As for cost, we are now seeing wireless headphones priced at $1550 from Bang & Olufsen. While $550 is still a lot of money, Apple offers high quality for the money. By the way you have interviewed an audiophile who gave the Max high praise. There are certainly other good offerings for 1/2 to 2/3 the price.

Sound refinement is important, but I think quality of life stuff is more important with each iteration (headphone brands should apply what they've learned from customers in that regard).

So there AirPods are the 1.1 versions with new colours and a new usb-c charging port. You can’t even buy an usb-c to 3.5 mm connector like the lighting to 3.5 mm jack. Am sure it’s the same H1 chip, I don’t know why they didn’t put the H2 chip like have AirPods Pro 2 so they could have similar features as them like you said

Oooh my. I love Sonos products! I tried the ACE’s and found it to be night & day compared to the AIRPODS MAX. The Max’s soundstage was more spacious and balanced. The Sonos needed tweeking in the mids section. They definitely have potential and could stand a firmware upgrade. Love your videos!

Mine have been broken, exactly after 2 years. I mean like exactly on the date i bought them and no warranty i was using them every day. Basically they don't connect anymore. It charges, everything ok. But connecting doesnt work anymore. Cleaned it but still no connection

I have that sagging issue too! I was thinking it was maybe just my unit. Well, apparently they don't age very well in that regard. One thing I'd love to know with USB-C is whether I can do audio over USB-C to USB-C, unlike the current gen's Lighting to 3.5mm.

As someone who could never wear earbuds because no pair I've ever tried has ever been able to fit properly in my ears (every pair I've tried always cause immediate pain and discomfort and always fall out of my ears, my ears just aren't built for them), I can only comfortably wear over-the-ear headphones with ease. I kind of hate the over-focus on earbuds while shrugging off over-the-ear headphone users.

Unless the Dolby atmos & Spatial Audio is a must have, I would say get the Bowers & Wilkins PX7 s2e. You’ll save some money and won’t have to invest in a case. Plus while the AirPods Pro sound good, B&W sound better.

My canopy is doing the same thing... Cuts into my head. Went to Apple and they won't replace it as it's wear and tear. Never thought mesh that is failing and hurting my head would be considered as part of the design.

Thought about waiting for the new AirPod Max for office use. I got the AirPod Pro for the gym and was unimpressed by the sound (Coming from Sony xm4) so I ended up with a pair of PX8 for the office and have not looked back. The fact Apple didn’t bother updating the AirPod Max reinforced I made the right decision.

For me, I’d been wanting air pods max for a long time but I didn’t want to have lightning. I tried other over the ear headphones and the lack of seamless change from one Apple device to the other was a draw back. Do i wish they did more of an update absolutely. But 1. They didn’t change the price. 2. I was in a position that I wasn’t buying these full price due to a gift card I had ear marked for this. I completely understand people not wanting them and going for other options. I had just sorta made up my mind on it. I just wish they’d done more, but who knows. Maybe the sound is better and we don’t know it yet.

Yeah it’s disappointing we didn’t get a new model, but the maxes are still great compared to the competition. I’ve tested a bunch of wireless headphones, and I’ve come away only really liking the AirPods Max, Focal Bathys, and the Dali IO12

Hi Mark, the only reason I got the AirPods max is they seem to be the only product that work well with my iPhone. I tried 2 pairs of the Bose quiet comfort and a pair of the quiet comfort ultra but they automatically disconnected from my devices after minutes of use. I also tried the Sony XM5 but the sound quality didn’t seem as good as the Bose and was missing quite a lot of the bass. I eventually had to settle for the AirPods max which have been great but could be better.

All airpods products lack in bass a lot, and I'm a daily user of airpods pro. And imo Airpods max sounds like it's got a nail stuck in the driver.

A bit disappointed they (APM) were not improved, however mine are a little tired and I value them mainly for Apple TV box. I have been offered just over £135 for my current (APM) via a selling website I rated as condition 'C' grade. So im deciding between paying £75 for new air cushions for my tired pair or selling and using the sale funds towards a new pair of APM. Still on the fence. All the best

I bought mine in pristine condition for £300 several years ago, it's insane they still charge £500 now considering it's the old H1 chip and the headband does not last. Mine has completely sagged about a year into ownership forcing me to buy a third party insert, shameful considering the price. I do love the ANC, sound quality and comfort though, they are my go to for hikes.

Lovely review Mark again. I sold my Focal Bathys (I hated them) looked like Dr Who and the cybermen, hated their sound also, but love my Focal Radiance which is a closed back headphone. I also got rid of my Bowers and Wilkins PX8 connection wise they were not very good kept disconnecting etc. I got the latest Bose but they were so boring and cheap feeling. I then bought the Apple Max which I am listening to your review on and I completely love them - yes for what you said the flawless connection to all my Apple products. The isolation is to my mind better than the Bluetooth headphones I have mentioned. I don’t use the case. However I bought a beautiful case from Waterfield but never use it because as soon as you put the headphones down after use they turn off and I just forget to put them in the case. The only thing I wish is that the cups were leather and not material. It’s quite scratchy and like you say the mesh should be a better material and not sag. Mine is okay at the moment but now I am paranoid. Thanks again for this.
