Congratulations on your new strawberry patch. In my experience with them, they can and will take over. They're not as bad as mint, but they do certainly like to spread

Many thanks! Yes shrubs like Honeyberry and Saskatoon are not commonly heard of in the UK though we have several commercial large farms growing honeyberry in Scotland already as well as one growing Saskatoon. Being small scale and using business models like CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) allows us to experiment with new, niche, crops, which is great fun! And we have the tried and tested berries as back up.

How exciting! Will you need to promote a more bacterial soil basis to support the bushes?
@TapoNothFarm
@TapoNothFarm 6 ай бұрын
Thanks! From our understanding, it seems like soil science advice recommends a fungal dominant soil for woody shrubs like berries etc. We're just going to go with the soils we already have without changing them too much as they have quite a bit of woodsy compost already on them as mulch, along with carbon based mulches like straw etc.

It really is worth investing in a few strawbs. The send out so many runners you will be able to increase their numbers very quickly

Are you going to enclose those berry spaces at all? We have 5 year old blueberries and currents up here in PNW and if we don't fully mesh them the birds will get to them all before we can :D

@@TapoNothFarm after posting I gave it more thought. Following the guidelines of forest gardening, ie multilayering, you could underplant your bushes with blaeberries? or whortleberries as we call them in SW Britain.
