Tactical Tanto and black!! LMAO! In my my earlier years in this in interest was always a tanto blade I bought I like you and many others started off there and certainly didn't think a knife could ever be over 100 dollars. Now I have amassed a pretty large collection from 25-80 dollars and the 100 to 650 range there is a lot of knives of all different flavors and now have a better appreciation of what it costs labor materials and origin. Great video.

In fairness even as a tool any knife above $150 or so is just pocket jewelry. One of the best cutting tools for household chores is a simple $5 utility blade. It’s hard to beat the slicing performance of a thin razor blade and you never need to sharpen them since they only cost a few cents to replace.

TLDR: Buy whatever makes you happy, forget what the haters say. Yeah I agree with you in a lot of these points you brought up MC. "Tactical" had lost all meaning these days & (let's face it) is used as a marketing tool to get people to buy said product, with or without a following. Me personally, I'm more of a fixed blade guy myself, and I do actually prefer combat or "tactical" looking knives myself, BUT not because I'm gonna do bad stuff with them or because I'm a trained professional, but because simply put it *_I like them._* I love my Ontarios, KaBars, Bucks, Cold Steels, SOGs, some of Viper's fixed blade line ups, and some Halfbreed Blades because I like em more than I do some other knives. That doesn't mean I'm an "inexperienced" person so to say, it just means that I am aware of other knives out there & that I just prefer _these_ knives because I like them more than others. Nothing more. I could care less what others people have to say or think, respectively; *_So as long as they are not hurting, hindering, or killing anyone while at it._* Anyway, great video here! I am gonna share this with some of my friends and shoe horn them their place in terms of knives as a _knife apprentice connoisseur ultra hybrid soldier turbo mode legend guy,_ and let them know that their tastes suck :) Cheers 🍻 Edit: typos

I actually do agree with much of what you said and I understand where you are coming from. However, as a law enforcement officer of nearly 2 decades and an edged weapons practitioner, I still gravitate towards knives that possess useful weapon attributes. I have a pretty sizeable collection of knives in this category and they run the gamut from fairly expensive custom and mid-tech pieces, to production pieces at various price points. I just like them! Truly though, if you know what you're doing, you can use any contact weapon and have a better chance of getting more desirable results than someone who is not trained. Certainly though, some people think their tacti-cool knives will do all of the work and turn them into ninja's. IMHO, the reason the so called "weapon" knives don't get used in defensive or offensive situations very much is because the people that buy them are well adjusted, productive members of society, who would rather not be involved in violence, regardless of whether they are trained in edged weapons use or not.

The pure aesthetic appeal of anything is always worth more money. Car companies charge you more if the color is anything other than silver or white; furniture companies charge more for certain colors on couches and the like! Charging more for something because it is pleasing to the eye is perfectly normal in any industry so why can’t knives do the same thing?

I'm sure the ones that think knives are only weapons, are the same people saying "no one needs an automatic weapon" with no clue that NO one is running around with automatic weapons... people like me that grew up with pocket knives were not thinking about knives as weaponry at 8 years old... it was for cutting apples, sandwiches, whittling, a 1000 things....

I started collecting knives in 2021 so I can be considered a newbie. I started with CRKT then I bought quite a few Chinese knives. I still have a lot of them. Then I moved up. I guess the first fairly expensive knife I bought was a ProTech Godfather (which I no longer have) and then an SOG Vision XR then I started buying Spydercos. Having gone through all of that, my favorite tactical/fighting/self-defense knives are still my James Williams CRKTs. If I had to choose just one, I still love my CRKT Hissatsu folder (I've got three of them).

Knives are tools ,somebody who has something bad in mind will rather use a kitchenknife or screwdriver instead of a 800/900dollar hawk knife. But good advise for the non knive people

I grew up in an era and a country where people just carried knives as a matter of course. Our teacher would tsk-tsk and whip out his knife to sharpen the pencil of us six-year olds. A little older, we had folding knives in our schoolbags and a lot of them were from Boy Scout and other youth groups. But then, we played outdoors all the time. We used them to make our “dens” in the undergrowth where we played…house, actually. Or something more like clubhouse, as we got towards adolescence. The sunroof in the bus flew up - someone jumped off, cut and trimmed a green twig off a bush and used it to repair the broken buckle. A strap on your bike pannier broke, you found something like a cord from a jacket and cut it. Yes, I would say it is about the last 20 years, and very very much an American culture spread, all this macho fantasy-warrior crap. Which feeds off the fantasy “prepper” crap. In an age when mass production makes as sturdy and robust a knife as could ever be needed, there can’t be any NEED for a knife that costs more than a few beers.

I know you don't do skits, but, man, it would've been hilarious if you had a cold open where you were doing dodge rolls while dressed all in black with a black t-shirt wrapped around your head as a ninja's hood, and after each dodge roll you just say, "tactical." 🐱‍👤 Joking aside, the first knife I got that wasn't a lil Swiss Army knife or slipjoint was a CRKT Hissatsu with my first paycheck from working at a flower shop. 😸 So, I am the target market, but that's also because I just don't like a bright metal sheen, and I also want a bigger knife that actually isn't as eye catching since it's not reflective, hence why I want to follow my Spyderco Dragonfly 2 with a black on black Paramilitary 2 or Para 3... or a Winterblade Factor if my bank account and its availability manage to sync up for once. 😏 Still, I feel the role that these kinds of knives and say wacky tacky stuff like the Cold Steel Espada serve is to catch someone some fragging charges. Unfortunately, then, they attract and enable people to humor their worst instincts. 🙃 Except for me, King of the Dynobutts, since I'm a perfect angel. 😌

The troubling part is that people who fear knives as weapons also see all this marketing and it reinforces that as well. I have personally talked with someone who firmly believed that not even people working in trades should be able to walk around with even a box cutter because all they see when they look at a knife that's designed to be carried is a dangerous object meant for aggression.

The most useful knife, far and away that I ever had was a Chinese knife from the local equivalent of a dollar store. It had a larger and smaller blade, a full-length peeler, a fork that nestled into a spoon, a can opener + bottle opener, awl and a corkscrew. The knife handle was a strip of steel that just flared out as wide as the spoon and folded right over the heel end to make the cover for the other side too. So it was free at either side, and the tools came out left and right. Or the whole stack could swing out, which made it very easy to clean. It also had a small folding loop. The steel was very good, and in 30 years I’d barely had to sharpen it. From the day I got it, every blade was razor sharp, including the awl, can opener and peeler. And very strong. The can opener could cut through just about anything. One day eating an ad-hoc picnic (opening the beer and wine, levering jar lids off, peeling mangoes, cutting meat and bread, spreading butter, spearing olives and spooning out yoghurt) one of my brothers admired it and I carelessly gave it to him, thinking I could easy replace it. But I never found such a useful, compact ir sturdy design again. Just huge lumpy “camp cutlery” things with knife and spoon OUTSIDE the cover, snagging on everything, or these goddamn “tactical” things that don’t even sit comfortably in your hand. Literally a knife that in its day cost about the same as one can of beer, was the most useful and most used knife I ever had.

Cold Steel's marketing is certainly over the top. 😂 While black is my favorite color, I love the fact that so many knives now come with so many color and material options for the handles now (no not you natural G-10 😛) I would also like to point out that even in the knife world, there are prejudices against certain kinds of knives, considering them more tactical while diminishing their practical uses. The karambit for instance was originally an agricultural tool, the finger ring allowing knife retention while holding or grabbing other things, it's use as a weapon coming later in it's evolution (and blown out of all proportion now) I personal find the finger ring a useful feature, especially in an outdoor knife, the White River Firecraft FC 3.5 Pro being a great example of a very practical knife that some will disregard simply because it features a finger ring.

Perfect example of this is the recently released ProTech Godfather SWAT and Operator knives. The regular Godfather is about $210 while the SWAT is a blacked out version for an extra $15 and the Operator is a blacked out version without the blade markings and tritium insert in the deployment button for a cool $300. All three will do the exact same thing but the two blacked out versions are marketed as “more tactical”. The operator is definitely really cool looking and that’s why I’d be more tempted to buy it, not because I feel like I’d be imbued with magical tactical ninja magic powers. Now I just gotta scrounge up $300…

@@oliverherron6606 I mean yeah logically trainers would be the best place to start. But shhhh I'm trying to justify not going down another spending rabbit hole of a different category of knives 😅

Question about an unusual folding knife i saw today!! it was a lockback knife and the opening mechanism was a lever, but the rotation of the lever was parallel to the rotation of the blade (everything that comes up when i search lever opening knife has levers that rotate perpendicular to the blade of the knife). It looked like a pretty normal lockback knife aside from this lever. Have you seen anything like i'm describing? edit: i found one that has a parallel lever on the spine, which is cool, but the one i saw had the lever mounted on the side of the handle

I laughed at the comment about influencers parking expensive cars on their videos for views. This coming from a knife guy that does the same. I dunno...just found that funny.

You do not have one knife under 300 being shown there . Christ 2 dead locks.. what happened to the beginning when we thought all pocket knives were 20 bucks 😂 Did we even care about what the steel was … got to love that … Food for thought have the same steak knives in the kitchen drawer for ever … they are still just fine …. I have had for so long. I forgot what I paid but then wasn’t over $100 that’s for sure. . Use them and wash them every day. 😂. If you CCW a gun and have to use your knife, your in deep shit .. that being said fixed is self defense more then a folding knife. I believe we most all this … Too funny how so many of us have the knife bug… that’s a fact . Thanks

"I don't need the training, just let the knife do it's work." I need this on a shirt or mug or some type of merch.

Only thing Smith & Weson has worth a shit is GUNS! Lol. If things got that far out of hand, I would just go to my M&P Shield or bigger, than pulling out my fancy tactical expensive knife. Just sayin.

The first time my brother took time in making a decision about what knife to buy he chose two knives with the company names TacForce and Wartech. Both assisted opening. 😂😂

A good paring knife is first a kitchenaid but can be used to open boxes, slice skin, flesh and arteries whether from a dead or a live animal.😂.

Knives make the worst weapons. And if I’m in combat, I’m already dead if I have to whip out my Spartan Difensa. 😂

i never considered my knives as weapons. once you get into that territory theres always a chance it gets taken from you and you get killed by your own very sharp blade.

I don’t know anyone who carries a knife and doesn’t look for a reason to use it for anything.

Well, here the law is literally "you can only carry a knife if said knife is specialized for what you're using it for"

17 years of special and covert operations..I have used my knife in combat once! And it was a fixed Winkler! People who buy a knife for defense solely and that knife is not fixed are idiots. The rule is..riffle then pistol then knife then hands and in reverse you fight with one to get to the next best weapon. Bottom line..get trained and avoid breaking the rules of stupid. Avoid conflicts! My words got me out of many harry situations..which is always the goal..however you come at me with your 3K knife I’ll bet I put you down with a gas station knife. It’s all about training, ability and violence of action.. you want tactical and hard use..get fixed period
