Dude, your new knife is gorgeous! I’m new to the knife world and have been watching your channel for a couple months now. Great content! You really know your stuff so I hope you can answer a question for me. I just bought a snap on version of a ken onion CRKT hi jinx. Is the blade steel on this version the same as the original budget CRKT hi jinx or is it something different? This one is black washed, and I can’t find any info on it.

I know I started out thinking that 200$ was an absurd amount to spend on a knife... fast forward several years and my acceptance of cost increased with my love for the hobby and appreciation of design elements. youre absolutely right that enthusiasts dont want everyone else to have the same knife, the exclusivity of knife collecting and carrying is fun and the wide range of diversity in what we all carry make the conversations interesting and engaging. Well said MC

It’s amazing the beautiful handmade customs that are obtainable. Made with your choice of exotic materials, polished up all nice and shiny. To display in a case. I can’t carry handmade knives. I have Elementums and Bugouts for EDC. But I appreciate the beauty in knife making. Kyle Royer, Kirby Lambert, Todd Begg. Some of the best knife makers.

I also think the purpose of the knife also effects the price. If I just wanted a knife to cut 200$ might be enough. I collect knives that are beautiful. I buy full customs when I can, and production knives that look like customs. To pay for the knife makers time, and materials used is costly. But it is worth it for the hobby we love

As someone who collects and owns hundreds of high end production and custom knives, I definitely try to explain to people that you don't need to spend a ton of money for a great knife. I try to give newer people good examples of users at lower price ranges, and definitely do not push them to buy the kind of knives I do. Quite the opposite really.

I told my sister yesterday that I had around 10k worth of pocket knives and she just didn't get it. I think her brain glitched and just said, "I don't understand.. Why?" And my only explanation was, "Because it makes me happy." I thought about it the whole way home and that's the only answer I could've given that makes any rational sense.

I find most people that are asking for a good knife for $20-$30 are currently wearing sunglasses, shoes or watches that are in the $100-$200 range. When they are shocked by the price of my knife, I ask them about the price of their watch, shoes or sunglasses. It’s funny, as soon as I ask you I can see the lightbulb come on. Almost every time they start entertaining the idea that $100-$200 dollars for knife is a good idea.

I think the whole lot of you guys are crazy for paying more than $50 for a knife. But watching videos about knives helped me find the Miguron Velona and I am very excited for it to be delivered. (Bought an extra for my son) I so appreciate this community since it is helping to fund further development in quality materials and workmanship that was necessary to bring this knife into existence. Over the years, the quality of steel has improved, the quality of overall design has improved, and I have you crazy people to thank for that. So thank you. Good video, I think I was the intended audience.

Hey MC - one of the reasons I enjoy your channel is that you are realistic and honest about what you get for the price of any given knife, and showcase knives across the price spectrum. I love seeing your fancy-ass knives, even knowing that I will never ever buy something like that for myself - I have other expensive hobbies (skiing, fly-fishing), but I appreciate the craft and it's great content. You also do a great job mixing in a lot of reviews of 'budget' knives - which I define as

My first “good” knife was $50 and I thought that was an insane price for a knife. I thought people that spent $100+ were just being bamboozled…until I experienced the elements of that price range myself. I’ve since worked my way up to the $500-600 range and I can definitively say: no one *needs* a knife more than $50. You can get 90% of practicality in that range and 98% of it under $175. There’s still plenty of other factors to enjoy that you can’t get in that range, but at the end of the day there’s still plenty of budget knives that are solid tools and will cut well.

This topic reminds me a lot of the tool community. I don't comment a lot because of how many diyers and collectors are so adamant about certain brands being good or bad. I use the stuff every day to feed my family, so aside from things I'm going to be using constantly I buy based on what's going to be good enough to get the job done and easy to warranty if it's something that's gonna break

I love your rants, especially how you never actually get mad but can laugh about these kinds of things. In the span of a few months I got really into knives and went from being a person who said "I'm never spending more than $100 on a knife! All it does is cut things!" to purchasing a $400 knife. And the quality difference is noticeable and I love it. Obviously a point of diminishing returns is reached but now I can appreciate the quality and detail in an expensive knife. One caveat for me is I always use everything I buy. I would never buy a pair of shoes and not wear them, a car and not drive it, or a knife and not cut something with it.

I can vouch for the preference thing. K390 endura is still my favorite pocket knife, even though I own a lot of much nicer, much more expensive, much more highly regarded knives. I think a $20-50 first knife is great to start. The reason being you will likely ruin the behind the edge thickness of your first knife while learning to sharpen. (I got a new K390 endura and found that my first one was like twice as thick behind the edge now from all sharpening that I did while learning to sharpen).

I totally agree with everything you said but I started with crkt and kerahaw inexpensive knives. But the more time I spent in this world, my ideas of what I liked has changed as well as my upper limit on what I would spend. Yea, they are ultimately tools that cut but for some people there is something else there for them. I can’t put my finger on it but whatever it is, I think some people don’t understand. For example, my family does not understand my love for knives or why I have so many. Truth be told, I can’t explain it to them.

I'm a desk jockey. I have absolutely zero need for a pocket knife, other than opening the occasional package. I buy them because I always need something to fidget with, because I can appreciate special materials and shapes, because I love to see and feel a high quality product, and simply because collecting something is fun. I'd certainly never expect anyone to think and feel the same way I do, nor for them to spend any more than they strictly have to.

Personal feelings aside, I'll offer an explanation. It's all about 1) Value- what kind of value does any particular item have to you. 2) What you can afford- value is relative to how much money you have in the bank and what you are willing to trade-off to have it. No one can account for another person's values and what they value, financial goals, self-discipline, timeline, motivation, etc., and we are all wired/trained/educated/influenced in different ways making the decisions very personal. If those things align for you and that gold plated samurai sword is something you have to have then go for it. That is something that no one else can explain for that person, but that individual. Enjoy!

Sweet knife. Basically I have 3 that I use and each one is its own. I do own more three. They are the $300 ZT , My (Discontinued ) Roxi and finally my Elementum (Added titanium scales and clip). If I had to pick my favorite... Elementum to sort of customize it and flame anodize myself but the Roxi makes this clank sound when closing. Ok I don't have a true fav but being able to add the clip and scales allowed me to feel that I stepped it up another notch. I started with copper. I'm fine with the D2. The other two are M390 and 20CV. Also at my 5 plus decades. I'm not old enough to appreciate something over $300 in a knife.

Are those t5 or t6 screws on those zirconium scales? You really should have a talk with the maker, they should use huge ugly fasteners to break up the lines of the zirconium scales

If I had all the money from what I spent on knives over the years, I'd have a good little chunk of loot. Luckily I don't have anything that's in the thousands, cause I know I'd be the one to depreciate something like a Francois du Toit by using and then sharpening it.

I have a pretty decent m390 TI scale, caged bearing flipper in the face of Twosun TS177 (Maverick) but I find myself using the Ganzo g729 with the 440C steel a lot more, the Spyderco-esque dimensions paired with a nice axis lock and good g10 scales are so nice to handle, can't be beaten for the $20-30 it sells for.

I hear what you are saying, but I think you are forgetting the nature of collecting. Humans that collect things as a hobby, from comics to cars, are doing so in part, because of the searching for, ownership of, and pleasure in search g for and owning. And nerding out on the various compositions, makers, artistry. Like any art. I guess a car would be a better analogy than a comic as it’s got a utilitarian function. But no one who owns multiple vintage, or high-end cars is doing it for the utility of owning that car. Same could be said for bikes. Got your every day commuter, maybe a mtn bike. Maybe a road bike. Maybe an e-bike. And then a better mtn bike, with better components. And then an upgrade on the gravel bike. And all of a sudden one owns 6! Who needs 6 bikes? But once you start and go down the rabbit hole and enjoy it… well, There it is. In any event, big game today. Geauxxxx Chiefs!

Didn't get into super expensive. (yet), I personally will pay for quality and utility. I'm still in the spyderco fanboy stage. However, I can absolutely appreciate that someone would be willing to pay for that hand-made art piece. It's not financially responsible for me at this point. But if you can, that's awesome. Like if I see someone with a brand new Porche, and they aren't a douche, I'll be happy they found their toy and could afford it. I'm a 20 year old honda accord guy. And that's OK.

Does a knife need to be a certain quality of Steel to get a mirror polish on the blade? I suppose that higher quality Steel will produce a better quality mirror, correct? And I'm referring to polishing knives at home myself. Would a S30V produce a nice mirror finish? I assume that's going to be a tough one to polish is that correct?
@ssunfish
@ssunfish Жыл бұрын
It's not as much a question of quality of steel. Some alloys make good knives and are not as easy to polish. It's a problem for the maker, not the end user/ customer. Most of the time it's not welcome to mirror polish higher tier steels that perform because of the Vanadium content! Most everyone in the know says CPM 154 is a dream to polish compared to CPM S30V. There's a huge difference in Vanadium content.

If that FDT is only $2600 for a fully handmade custom, then other productions have to be overpriced right? I guess it would be interesting to know how many hours that took, compared to a Shiro or a Rosie or especially a Grimsmo and Holt that are totally CNC.

South African knife makers tend to charge a bit less because of purchasing power (money goes farther there) and because their craftsman culture doesn't center around brand prestige in the same way that it does elsewhere. This is true for knives and other goods.

I think like any luxury item that the hardcore people lose track of the purpose and get caught up in the numbers - latest and greatest specs. The worst are the snobs who look down on anything that isn't the latest and greatest. 20 years ago D2, VG-10, 154cm and CPM440V were considered (pardon the pun), cutting edge. Now some in the knife community who are lucky enough to be able to spend $200, $300, $400 on the latest releases in M390, ZDP, etc look down on these knives. Why? Did these steels suddenly become pot metal? Do they melt under today's global warming? Have they been found to be carinogenic? None of the above. They cut well then and they will cut well now. It's just that there have been advances in metallurgy and the bar went up. But those older steels are still darn good and will still offer performance more than average person needs to cut that Amazon package, or blister pack, or show off cutting an apple with a $400 folding knife when a $20 Zwilling paring knife would serve us better...which is what most of do, let's be honest. Most of us are not making feather sticks and batoning wood or cutting seatbelts rescuing people out of burning cars with our cruwear knives. Seeking better, stronger, faster and the latest and greatest is fine. That's how we get better products that perform better. But at the end of the day theres more to a knife than the steel composition. There's overall build, comfort, ergonomics, intended purpose and use and even subjective tastes like cool factor. I'll take a mint vintage out of production BM 710 in ATS-34 over any current Benchmade in M390 or cruwear because to me there's more to the knife than the latest and greatest steel. The thing that matters is that you enjoy it whether it's a $35 Byrd or a Chris Reeve custom.

I love your watch analogy with watches. I can and have justified a >10k watch purchase that can't even do everything a $10 Casio can do and what it can, not even as well. However I have never bought a more than $150 folding knife, despite liking knives. I anticipate there is a similar lack of public recognition of the knife in your pocket as the is the watch on your wrist... No one notices. Wear/carry what makes YOU happy. It all comes down to what you appreciate and ultimately appreciating said craftsmanship! Long winded, but very valid points!

Perfect example: Moms China cabinet. The Queen herself could have showed up for dinner… and those plates are staying in that cabinet. Are expensive plates more utilitarian than normal plates? No? Then…Why more expensive?! Because humans like to collect nice things. Probably a status thing tied to evolution.
