I use to manage an office complex. Every single time a tenant complained about having ants, they would have crumbs all over the floor and a trash can full of food wrappers. For some reason they couldn't understand the connection.

I live in a low income apartment and I would never ever treat a place like this. My landlord said I have the cleanest and nicest looking unit in the complex. I keep my home spotless and If and when we move in the place will be very clean. I have 2 kids and 3 kitties and they don’t destroy the place. We’re quiet we follow the rules. I just don’t understand how people can treat someone else’s property like this. I’m sorry you have to deal with people like this. I’d love to be able to rent a house like this.

I knew a college student (22 years old woman named Missy) that began taking in “homeless” animals. A dog, a cat..yes. But also, a monkey, a ferret, a potbellied pig, a parrot, a cockatiel or two, turtles… The house began to stink really bad! I went to the apartment once because my sister was friends with her. (I was a 24 y/o male). Missy was smitten with me and for years after she asked about me, wanting to be my girlfriend. That first impression of the animals stink turned me away forever. Keep that in mind…single cat ladies. 😻😾

I know how tenants can be My Dad had several rental properties, and believe me, it is unbelievable how people live. Finally, after years, the tenants were getting worse. So, he started selling those properties off. Renters are not like they used to be. My husband and I were in the military, and we had to rent. We left the place in better shape than we rented it. The landlords were thankful. We cleaned, painted, and put new flooring in, fixed small plumbing problems, and kept up the grass and flowerbeds nice. The landlords always agreed to pay 50/50 on the repairs or just take off so much rent.

I've been in property management fir 24 years and believe me this is the norm. There are a few good tenants but there's more bad apples then good ones. Then there's a whole other story when you have to evict a tenant( they fir sure going to leave it looking like this on top of punching holes in the wall, breaking windows, appliances, etc.......). Oh and sometimes the smell can knock you on the ground.

One of the main reasons I will NEVER be a landlord/rent anything to anyone ever again. I've been through this and MUCH WORSE, with cops/courts involved, and no matter how you bend over backwards to please a tenant, many times they will do things like this. Worst one I ever had was a similar situation (Daddy in FL paid for everything, so ZERO f*&@s given for anything). Good luck with everything!

"Economic outpatient care" is commonly referenced and warned against in Thomas J. Stanley's book "The Millionaire Next Door" which is a statistical book about the habits and choices of millionaires. Well renters…You can thank your fellow renters for that! This 69 yo educated addict… who is also a narcissist.. lied on her application….she knew how to play the game. Everything that has come out of her mouth since signing her lease have been lies. It was a beautiful duplex…I live on the other side…(nightmare) ….go out of my way for my tenants. I did call in the board of health….if you have never dealt with a narcissist..lucky you. Nobody does that to a narcissist…….the mind games she played after that were unbelievable. Vindictiveness only is only the half of it. She has used every trick in the book ….every illness thinkable…why she DIDN’T have to move. Thank God….I documented every thing since the day she moved in. DOCUMENTATION…..DOCUMENTATION…you need to do that! Hundreds of pictures taken ….internet searches galore! All will come in handy when you go to housing court….with a lawyer. I clean, paint, remodel and do electrical and plumbing etc. I have cleaned out 1200 heated square foot homes that were hoarder houses. One in particular, the tenants had been there 12 years and other than a narrow walkway from front door, through living room, to bedroom, bathroom and kitchen- stuff was piled to the ceiling throughout. I had to use only my fingers in a tiny crack that the doors would open and pull items through the crack one by one until I could open the doors little by little. When I lived in Florida and was going to school I lived and apartment complex that wasn't "low Income" or "Student Housing" it was just cheap housing that alot of students lived at who went to school in Orlando and you wouldn't believe how most of them lived and rules of the lease? haha yeah right..... The rules didn't apply to them. They have one renter that literally cut a hole in the wall between the living room and the bedroom almost the entire height of the wall and put their tv on a rotating shelf so they could lay in bed and watch tv at night. The cops were there every weekend because there was a party or a fight or what have you..... it was crazy. You would THINK that college students wouldn't act like that, but they did.

That's crazy. We rent a garage apartment and though I would like to use the garage, it's not part of our lease. Neither it the basement, as that is where a lot of the thing are located that are not for me to mess with, like hot water tank and the heating system. We have a property management team that includes a team of maintenance guys and anytime something needs dealt with they come right over, but I woudl NEVER think to use the garage or the basement because they are both locked/secured and I knwo ti is not something I am paying to use. I am working through a few boxes I still have on my porch area, but it's not something I will have out much longer. One thing these people never think about is how things might bother other people. My home is behind another house. My front door and both porch/patio areas look over at the house. I would be upset if they left it junky because it reflects poorly on me when I have a visitor. It makes my property management team look trashy and encourages other people to nto take care of their property. We live in an area that used to be very affluent, but now is more middle class. However, the homes are still beautiful and you can tell when head to the trashier areas becasue they all treat the property like this family treated this home in the video. Hopefully you can get your money back and they get more than a slap on the wrist. Maybe if momma has to go to court or deal with a judgment on her credit (even if it gets paid off, it still could come up as a judgment on credit report). And soem of these landlords now ask questions like, have you ever had to pay more than $500 for property damages? This mom is not doing them any favors and will ruin her own credit covering for these birds that need kicked out of the nest.

Oh My Goodness! Those tenants seem like the exact same people that occupied a rental next door to us. Had a mommy money bank too. She preferred to pay for them to NOT live with her. Kept complaining to the property manager about them with, dogs, kids, drugs yada yada yada and they did absolutely NOTHING. When they finally moved out (they never stay long) the house was completely trashed! The entire neighborhood was glad they were gone.

My stress level was thru the roof but now at age 74, I’m done as they have been sold and it is the best life ever. Thank Jesus for my life and sanity.

How do they get a reference to get another place? We had a duplex with an apartment upstairs and down. We rented the upstairs unit to a woman who decided to put in a water bed. She hooked up the hose to the kitchen sink and left to go shopping. I got a call from the downstairs tenant screaming that water was pouring out of the ceiling fixtures. We sold the place and that was the end of being landlords.

I had a neighbor in Austin for 12 years, who lived like that. When he left, his home was absolutely full of stuff. He allowed his kids to spray grafiti all over inside the pool. The buyer demolished the house and built a new one. When I sold my home a year later, I left it almost clean. I offered to vacuum the floors and fill the little holes in the walls. The buyer told me not to. He also demolished the house and built a new one. By the way, my own brother lives like my former neighbor, and so does my former car mechanic (retired now). Go figure.

My brothers first wife thought if you rent a place it’s not yours so you don’t have to clean it. He cleaned and did everything and worked. He was divorced before a year was up. If you rent it is your home if you are paying money to live there. You should keep it clean. 🙄 I don’t know how people can think any different than that. It’s your responsibility!!

Parents do a disservice to their children, and the world at large, when they pay for everything. My brother did this, and you'd have thought an adult child would be truly grateful. Nope. My sis in law, had a heart of gold, but she had one flaw, which made her see her adult children, who had children of their own, as helpless as they were at age 5. She not only bought their food, she shopped for it. My brother, a physician, and professor not only gave two of their children (1, got the heck out of there, at age 15, by getting pregnant, on purpose, got married, and never looked back) about 1 1/2 acres of land, and a 3 bed/2 bath home. The result was neither had toil in their lives. My nephew, whom I adored could have been a musician. He could master any instrument, and my niece could've worked with horses. Both chose to do nothing. Too many want to be wealthy, today, on their parents money. You hear neighborhood "Karen's" insisting on "my property" lines being here, finding that she is actually living in Mom's home, and instead of her at least keeping the place clean, allows her child to write on the walls, instead of cooking, is always tired, so Mom finds herself being a mom to an old teenager, and a toddler. People need to toil, but also deserve what they toil for. If I have more, it's not because of some invisible inequality. It's because I began getting up early when I was in 2nd grade, and doing work assigned to me. If I am paid more, it's not because of my skin, it's because I go above and beyond, the assignment. Parents who cosign, usually learn a valuable lesson, if they aren't let off the hook, too. I hope your tenant's mother ends up paying for the filth her family left you to deal with. The property could be a bed and breakfast, and I love the color. Better luck, next time, and hopefully you learned not to rent to people who need a cosigner for anything.

I just don't understand how some people have no pride or respect for a place they live in, whether they rent or buy. I have to agree with you that Mom probably pays for everything and always has but never taught responsibility. I'm a long time renter and I've lived in many cities in the past as I traveled with the ex husband while he was in the military. We always got our deposit back and there was one time we got it back without an inspection. The landlord came over the day we were leaving. She had been over many times before and she also had my permission to enter the place whenever she wanted. I know about the 24 hour notice thing unless it's an emergency. But I wanted her to know we had nothing to hide. She handed me the cash deposit and never checked the place out. That was so cool really. It's really so sad how some renters just destroy the home of another. Just as a note of interest, since there is access to the underside of the house in the cellar, I would put bubble foil up under the flooring. It keeps the upstairs warmer and mice don't like it. Also, I live in a very old A Frame cottage near the woods so mice is a definite problem. That was until I got some plug ins that emit a signal not heard by the human ear but definitely keeps the mice and other critters out.
