I worked in The Netherlands, North of Amsterdam, as a police officer for 38 years. My station was 9.9 miles (16km) from my home. Most days I commuted by bicycle. The largest part of my ride was through the "polder", let's say an agricultural area. Especially the spring and summer seasons I loved. I worked all shifts, morning, day, afternoon and night. Especially the afternoon/evening shifts could be very busy and stressfull. At 23:00h I cycled home in the evening fresh air through the super quiet farmland area and I came home without stress and could sleep well. Cycling is not only beneficial for your physical health, but also for your mental health. I'm 69 years now and last month I cycled 700km (435 miles) just for fun and good health in the border area of The Netherlands and Germany. My dad started cycling as a kid. Never got a driving license and commuted all his working life 40 km (25 miles) per workday. He had a very good physical health, was almost never a day sick and passed at the age of 93. Enjoy cycling !

One more thing: for those who drive, add to the hours it takes to drive to and from a gym or fitness center plus the time there to work out to get to the same fitness level you are now getting from commuting.

I would never ride such routes as you do, with either no lanes or merely painted bike lanes. Way too scary imo. But hills, un-plowed snow, rain, etc... Will do every day of the year pretty much. The exercise is just so worth it. Wakes you up real nice. Much easier to stay in shape. I hope you get more safer routes as well, it's nice to be able to relax while riding without an increased risk of getting rear-ended or sideswiped. Also that would really help with more people realizing cycling is a decent commute option.

I cycle to work most days, it's a 15 mile round trip. It's actually a perfect way getting in and out of a busy city during rush hour. Plus you get some regular exercise. The only downside from my perspective are some other cyclists aren't very considerate on the shared path we're lucky enough to have access to.

PRO TIPS: (1) Always cross train tracks perpendicular to the rail, never at an angle. (2) Head-mounted headlight adds a lot of visibility and versatility. (3) Carry pepper spray for use with attacking animals, should they go for your ankles. (4) Consider a nice electric bike to assist with hills or monotonous stretches that might otherwise dissuade you from riding.

Haven't done any cycling for 20 years, until now. I'm also in my 50s and recently started bike commuting again, unless, like before, the weather is bad. Only where I currently live, rain = hail, so I don't want bruises all over my body. Otherwise, I would do it then too. I am walking to and from work every day. It is a 35 minutes trip each way, just under 4 km. It is on separate infra structures, a big part of the distance through a park or green areas. And as you said, it is free excersise, because I would need to spend almost the same amount of time in my car in the rush hours. The advantage with walking, compared to bicycling, is that I can listen to music. And since I play a brass instrument as a hobby, I can excersise on my mouth piece as well. If I am in a hurry, I will use my bicycle.

Yes, my wife does the same on days when she goes to work although her walk is not as long - to and from the bus stop. When I was younger I also played brass instruments. I started on the trumpet and ended with the trombone playing every brass instrument at some point. I had a partial music scholarship to collage and played professionally for a short time. Mid way through collage I decided the lifestyle of being a musician was not as appealing as being a CPA so I gave up playing.

Way to go! Isn't it interesting how a successful commute makes you want to share your experience so others might take it up? I too feel the same way. One of many important components to my commute is smart wool. It dries well and doesn't smell so it can be reworn before washing. Sounds gross, but when you ride 5 or 6 days a week you will wear out your base layers by washing them constantly. Smart wool is worth it. I have 2 pairs of pants, and 4 shirts of varied weights in long sleeves. Not to mention socks for days. Also, bar mits are really helpful, and they allow me to just use wool gloves, which I find more comfortable than waterproof gloves.

So, I’ve been bike commuting for the past month here in Phoenix. Arizona and I lOOOOVE IT! What I’d like to know from other commuters is how do you prepare for worst case scenarios? Flats, rain, heat etc. I just had a flat today and I knew it was coming that I needed to prepare for it. Best I could do was walk my bike back home 2 miles in my 5 mile commute. I’ve got my own ideas but would love to hear some others. My current is to carry a spare tube and a set of tools/pump.

I actually carry two spare tubes, a pump and CO2. I started commuting in August and so far have only had to fix two flats at the side of the road. This depends on the person, sometimes it is not as stupid as it sometimes is. In one way by bike, it takes me 18 minutes (6.5 miles) unlike 7 minutes by car. Why this difference? Because I live between countries connected by the countryside, therefore only round and no traffic lights, I very rarely get stuck in traffic (only 5 days throughout 2019 and there is a low population rate in my countries). To count that as you said, with the bike, I must also add the cleaning time. In all, in a day, it takes me about 20 minutes by car, but it takes about 55 minutes by bike (I don't include a shower in my house). So in my case, yes it's stupid, the car is a winner in everything. But anyway, I grind more miles by bike than by car, because the bike has its beauty. I find it more satisfying, also because I can save petrol, to use them at the weekend for a trip in a sports car. Ah, I can't ride a bike in the rain, I don't know why, but I think I have a 70% chance of getting sick according to my own statistics.

I think a bicycle commute under five miles turns into more of a commute while one over seven seems to be more of a road ride. An advantage of a shorter commute is it is more comfortable to ware regular clothing and use any bicycle. Longer rides start to turn into "road" rides where cycle clothing and a nicer bicycle is more important. At least that is how it feels to me. I think you will enjoy commuting on your regulars bike. Yes, I bring a lunch every day. I started using a fairly large backpack. I still use the backpack when I rice my fast road bike. My commuter bike has a rack and paniers which I prefer. I started with cheap paniers from eBay but changed to nicer Topeak paniers. The Topeak paniers are nice as they have a section on top of the rack so my lunch is not on its side.

I just don't ride my bike when the road is frozen. I tried using gravel tires when it is frosty but that was not much fun.

If I ride to work then I don't need to spend any extra time doing cardio.

What bike do you ride in this video?
@markgunnison2 жыл бұрын
I'm riding an REI City bike in the video. That bike now has over 4k miles on it and has become my backup/winter bike. About a year ago I purchased a Trek Checkpoint that is my current commuter bike.

Consider an electric bike as you age. There are lots of videos online about them

I considered getting one when I got my bike. I have several family members with really nice e-bikes. They are a lot of fun.

Why on earth would cycling to work be a dumb idea???
@markgunnison3 жыл бұрын
Most of my friends think I’m crazy. Especially when it is raining. So far I have not talked any of them even into trying it. I’m really enjoying it though.

@@markgunnison maybe you should change your friends and join the fraternity who think nothing of cycling in wind and rain for health, adventure and a better planet.😊
