I am brazilian living in São Paulo and my grandmother was syrian from Aleppo. The syrian and lebanese immigrants here made the best hospital of my city (mostly the women), the Orthodox Church and they’ve contributed a lot to commerce, politics, universities, art, important people, and of course, the levantine food which is very present in my city and I love it. Thank you so much for showing the great history and culture of Syria when we only hear bad things. I love this country and I will visit someday for sure سلام

Mark, you forgot most important: 1) Damascus as the oldest continuously inhabited Capital - 9,000-11,000 y.o. 2) Aleppo claimed as oldest continuously inhabited city, possibly 11,000-13,000 y.o. according to recent archaeological findings. 3) Palmyra and the warrior-queen Zanobia. 4) Syrian women made first christian churches, by gathering people in their homes to pray. 4) The influence of Syriac rhythms on Andalusian music and the Mwashahat &Quddud of Aleppo. 5) A famous food of Damascus, the various kinds of "Fatteh". Also 6) Jerry Seinfeld’s origin is from Aleppo, Paula Abdul also Syrian origin - both of Syrian Jews who immigrated to U.S. Finally 7). Farid Alatrash, I say more influential than his sister Asmahan, as a singer, musician composer and actor.

Jbeil-Byblos Baalback ... You are correct, it is debatable, depending on “continuously inhabited”, what defines a “city”, at what size do they start counting, or just start at first settlement, etc... Nonetheless, Damascus and now Aleppo are at the top in all sources I’ve seen, followed by Byblos and Jericho. Others on the lists are: Sidon, Beirut, Argos (Greece), Plovdiv (Hungary). They are followed by: Sousa (Iran), Erbil (Iraq) , Varanasi (India), Faiyum (Egypt) and Gaziantep (Turkey) - generally all considered over 6,000 y.o.

I am as western as they come. I have been privileged to visit Lebanon and Syria in the past year. Both are beautiful with spirt! What could be more beautiful than listening to the heart of Lebanon, that is Feyrouz while sitting in the heart of Syria, that is old Damascus ❤️

One thing.... The Name "Syria" came not from the the "Assuria"! It's a greek term for the word "Aram". Also in the Septuagint and other Greek scripture there are also the Arameans called as "Syriacs"!
@Yusgfftag4 жыл бұрын
You are wrong buddy Syria did indeed come from Assyria the Greeks called Bilad Al Sham (Syria) because most of its people were considered Assyrians to the Greeks, but because the people of Bilad al Sham did not consider themselves Assyrians the Greeks dropped the letter A and called them Syrians and from that day Assyria and Syria became too separate terms that meant the same thing, just to clarify people of Bilad Al Sham (Syria) were not all Arameans, there were Cannanites, Amorites, Nabateans and other ethnic groups who at that time all spoke a form of Aramaic, even the people of Bilad al Nahrain (Assyria, Babylon) and Bilad Fars (Persia) spoke Aramaic, some spoke it as a First Language and some as a Second language.
