I have made something similar using a medicine bottle with the bottom cut off and a smooth fitting wooden plunger with a dowel attached. A little piece of foam on the wood plug makes it easier to see her. About 6 or 7 1/4" holes in the white cap lets a person use a marker. Care must be taken not to squish the queen, but it works pretty well. Bob

I like this better than the one I seen last week where she was under something pressing her down next to the hive frame
@Pugwash074 жыл бұрын
Damn sure I saw some hive beetles on that frame where you caught the queen.

I have the good fortune of making my first hive and ordering bees just in time for a national quarantine. Making finding a mentor to help all but impossible. I was nervous about messing this up before, now I'm terrified

I did the same thing! Nothing like picking up your first NUC in full COVID gear!

Doug: doesn’t wear gloves when doing all this Me: AAAAAAAAAAA DONT GET STUNG
@DougtheBeeGuy5 жыл бұрын
I usually wear gloves, but its problematic when trying to catch the queens and mark them. Thanks for watching!

Yeah, see how that could happen. Stay safe

Do they not sting your hand?
@DougtheBeeGuy6 жыл бұрын
+waggs cole I get stung very rarely especially in the hands because I'm wearing those goatskin gloves. Honey bees can sting through the gloves if they're seriously pissed and sting deeper but usually they don't push that hard.

What kind of pen did you use to mark her?
@DougtheBeeGuy7 жыл бұрын
I used a Sharpie paint pen to mark the queens in the video because my POSCA Pen was all used up. I would recommend using uni Posca pens for queen marking because they have been used by many beekeepers and do not adversely affect the queen. Here is a link to them on Amazon: amzn.to/2hLQoM9 I also put other links in the description for stuff that I use in my videos. Thanks so much for watching!

What do you use as paint
@OnlyDenver3 жыл бұрын
Freeze the image at 3:06. it looks like oil based paint (in a sharpie marker)

Great video. How long does the paint last? Do you need to update the paint regularly?
@DougtheBeeGuy6 жыл бұрын
Usually it will last the life of the queen. 2 to 3 years.

Where on the bee do you mark her?
@DougtheBeeGuy5 жыл бұрын
Queens are generally marked with paint over the brown spot on their thorax. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

Have you ever had a situation where once you had painted the queen and were attempting to put her back into the box She simply flew away
@MH016848 ай бұрын

What's the point of marking the queen, just to find her easier?
@DougtheBeeGuy5 жыл бұрын
One reason is to be able to find her easily. Another is so your able to tell what year your queen was introduced into the hive via the color. Also marking the queen will allow you to know if your hive swarmed during the season. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
