I appreciate this. I am about to rob my bees for the first time (2 year old hive). My neighbor came in summer to help me inspect and he said there was probably 50 pounds of honey then. I’ve just been nervous but it has to be done. I hate to ask people for help, I’m weird about help, so this really helps!!

Awesome video mate , the hardest thing for a new bee keeper is keeping their hands of the honey till it’s ready , the first harvest is something you never forget , it’s like magic when you get your first honey from your bees , I remember mine 24 years ago still to this day , excited like you wouldn’t believe lol , each to their own , I never take my honey till its 100% capped , this is premium honey the best and properly ripened, patience is the thing especially when it’s your first hives honey. 👍

I was considering setting up a hive for our fruit trees and to collect honey. This video is great. I was curious on your opinion since my purpose is smaller, do you think going the traditional route is more beneficial than the flow hive? What draw backs would there be to using the flow hive versus the traditional methods?

Super super helpful! Thank you! I put on a new honey super last week, before the goldenrod came on, the existing honey was full of Over honey, all 10 frames. When I harvest, my honey in a week or two, do you recommend and harvesting those two supers together or separately? In other words, mixing the goldenrod, honey with the spring and summer honey, or separating them?

why do you have entrance holes in the supers?

Where are you in NW Indiana? I just moved from there to SW Virginia in 2022 and I think it's time to harvest my honey for the first time. I got my bees in early June of 2023. Thanks for the tutorial!

Can you put your hive box under a shaded tree or do they need sun

I want to have a hive for honey but I would like to know the best place to put them. I want to put them under my peppertree which is highly shaded with hanging branches. Can you put them in the constant shade and still have bees produce honey?

Hi Doug. Thank you so much for this information. 2 years ago, we went through that heartbreak of dead hives in the spring… both of them. It’s surprising how emotional that experience was… I felt like a murderer! The following year we could not get Bees as they were all sold out, so we stored our hives in the garage. Two our amazement and delight, a colony of bees found one of the hives in the garage and moved in! So we moved the hives back out to the bee yard And did our best to learn everything we could and try to figure out what we did wrong. Although the colony seemed very strong, we took no honey. we did not treat them for mites, did not open the hive after September and stacked straw bales all around the hive and a tarp over everything to keep it from getting wet. They came out gangbusters this spring, and we did the happy dance! Last week we opened the hive to find 7 seams in each deep absolutely covered with bees! So we did a split (clumsily). The queen remained in the original hive, leaving the split to make their own queen. My question is… Should we have provided a queen in that split?

Am I correct: did you put 2 boxes of bees into 1 hive, with 2 queens? We have ordered 2 boxes of bees, to come in a few days, and were under the impression that they would go into 2 distinct hive boxes, with I queen per hive. And what about front feeders, should we use them? That’s what we have used in the past. Thank you kindly.

The only thing I found questionable about that technique was not securing the queen cage to the frame with that pre-attached clip or a rubberband. I DO like your technique of allowing the bees to migrate into the deep box frames at their leisure, without a shake-out. Good Tips !

As a beginning beekeeper. I want to say this. I think you're thinking too much about the placement and not the. Reason why they wanted in the Southern area is because it gets the most SUN OR HEAT. It's not the direction it's the most light and Heat..
