Just noticed something. When mark watches the recordings from the 'dream state', pay very close attention. among the static you'll briefly be able to see the Murkoff 'M' logo. Its only momentary, like subliminal messaging kind of momentary, but I think this adds heavy credibility to the idea the Murkoff is behind the events at Temple Gate. If you'll recall, in Outlast 1, some of the documents explain experiments that cause vivid hallucinations, mind control (with no memory of their actions), and induced phantom pregnancies. All of those things are present in Outlast 2. So I'm making this argument to the day I die, Murkoff Corp is sending supernatural themed hallucinations into the mind of Knoth, who mistakes it for being visions from God. This sounds exactly like the kind of thing Murkoff would do, to see how far they can make people go under the guise of the 'prophetic' visions of a cult leader.

There's also a hard to find note in the game that talks about it, and it is written by someone who is measuring the radio waves or whatever, and it mentions a character who we know worked at Mount Massive. So yeah, Murkoff is 100% behind everything in the game.

I know Mark looked like he was getting irritated with the sudden transitions into the school memory/hallucination, but damn were those some good transitions. They just slipped them in seamlessly with the story and movements. Very subtle. I loved it.

I'm not sure about the locusts, but the birds and fish dying seems to only occur immediately after a flash by The Light, so it's possible that their brains simply can't handle it's mysterious psychological effect. As for the rain of blood, I'm wondering if it's actually just normal rain, and Blake just THINKS that it is blood, being sleep-deprived, concussed, dehydrated, blood-lossed, stressed, terrified and hallucinating as he is.

Michael Ramon this makes a lot of sense. I found it kinda weird that when mark pointed the camera down, or turned on night vision, it didn't really look like blood raining or pooling on the ground. To add to the "sleep deprived hallucinations" idea, Blake is slipping into the high school "fever dream" sequence more frequently that he was in the beginning of the game.

Or maybe it's some kind of like, idk what to call it, but maybe it's radioactive. Not enough to instantly kill the people, but cause horrible defects (the scalled for example) and make them seriously hallucinate, and the radiation is enough to kill the local wild life. And as you notice, the more it happens the worse the hallucinations get, and the more dead people turn up too. Radiation poisoning is a bitch.

Mark i love your playthrough of the game since you really care about the story and that makes it so interesting to watch! :) Some things i noted: Remember how there was no females in outlast 1 because the asylum mind control machines made everyone pregnant and go through the pregnancy quicker? Maybe the same is happening in this town which would explain all the dead babies, your wife getting pregnant, why the villagers fear the babies and the faith the people put in papa Knoth since he claims the devil is trying to enter the world which would give them an explanation for what's transpiring to the women? Also from a note you found earlier and the first time you saw the white light but didn't get hypnotized you saw the villagers walking around like in a trance and one of them kept apologizing to his father for something? Maybe the mindcontrol thing make people see the thing they regret the most or the thing that trouble them the most/feel most guilty for (which in Blakes case seems to be the abuse and suicide of a childhood friend that he felt he could have stopped)? A note mentioned that papa Knoth said the visions was from god and that the people had to face their sins over and over in order to be forgiven by god, which makes sense. Also the entire theme of the game seems to be questioning blind faith as seen in the demo description "Horror rises from desperation and blind faith." The entire plot might be that Murkoff found a highly religious town to "experiment" upon to test reactions and since you went to a catholic school that prob means the lead character is religious aswel and therefore affected. This might explain why that guy who let his daughter escape wasnt as insane as everyone else, maybe he wasn't religious and therefore didnt get affected? Maybe papa Knoth isn't religious but works for Murkoff to control the villagers which would explain why he had Martha kill the guy that was nice to you since maybe he realized he wasn't under the influence? Also someone else pointed out in an earlier comment that when you recorded the lake Blake mentioned the smell of chemicals and from the start of the game you know that the woman who escaped had mercury poisoning (which makes people insane) It's probably connected. Interesting to point out is that Val is referred to as a "He" in all notes but seems to be female in game, idk if relevant to the plot :D Looking forward for the next video!

Just got done watching the current 7 parts on TV and came back to comment on a few things Mark was questioning: •From what I can piece together, Jessica was raped by a priest (presumably Papa Knoth) and he hung her. Blake was the only witness. Evidence for these two is from the mention there was blood dripping down her feet as she hung, and that you find blood overflowing in the girl's bathroom. (Vaginal tearing is common in rape events, causing excessive bleeding.) •The helicopter pilot, under influence of the white light, most likely is what caused the helicopter to crash. Not engine failure. Remember that outside of that white light, everyone else sees something differently. •Blake said it was bad when he found civilization because at this point he can't tell who to trust anymore. •The Heretics are actually good people. The definition for a Heretic is one who disobeys the Church. Not directly meaning they disobey the religion. The church system is always what causes the corruption and hatred in a religion to spread. Ok, here's my theory. I believe Jessica was molested by one of the priests at the school, leading her to commit suicide. This would explain a few things. One, the monster that is pursuing our character. What are some notable things about it. The hands, it's tongue, it's disgusting appearance. I believe this represents his memories of what happened to her. This would explain his down look on religion. The reason why he's having this mental episodes is because the situation is similar. He started happening these episodes after learning about how Knoth forces himself onto women, then having them killed. After the traumatic experiences, he's losing his mind, explaining why the episodes are becoming more violent and frequent. He's losing touch with reality, explaining why he keeps referencing Jessica being in the situation, even though she is already dead. It also explains why he's seeing blood rain.

okay, here's my theory about the flashbacks/alternate reality stuff: Blake, Lynn, and Jessica all went to school together, a Catholic School by the looks of it, and most likely Jessica had a crush on Blake, from what we've seen in previous notes it's clear that Jessica would stay late on occasion, and probably watch Blake play at practice in whatever sport/extracurricular activity he was in, and then there's the thing about that field trip that, supposedly, Jessica had a bad home life and therefore forged her father's signature to try to go, but the staff clearly caught wind of that and didn't allow her to. My theory is that the day of field trip she was made to stay, and one of the priests stayed back with her while everyone else went on the field trip , her and Blake both were there after school, and the Priest tried to sexually assault her/grab her at first/whatever, she got away, and while she was running from the Priest she found Blake and had him hide with her, and while Blake still was hidden, possibly too scared to do anything/being just a child, the Priest found Jessica and raped, possibly even impregnating her, if all these themes of the game are anything to go by. She blamed Blake for not helping/saving/loving her, and killed herself/Or possibly the Priest killed her to cover it up. Or even repressed guilt is causing Blake to think she blamed him. Either way Blake witnessed it all and most likely blocked out a lot of the memory of the incident like some young kids do in very traumatic events. Due to these psychological stimulation it's coming back and warping/meshing with these themes, or even that one event has something to do with this all. Hell, Papa Knoth could even be the very Priest that sexually assaulted and killed/caused her to kill herself. But these are just theories of mine. Not sure what the truth is just yet.

Well now I'm at 20:02 and the footage review about the blood dripping + Jessica always saying "he's coming" and running away makes me think Blake was actually a big ol piece of dookie and was having his way with her. I still think Mr. Handsy is his manifestation of unsolicited sexual acts but maybe that he committed. Handsy talked to him on the phone about kissing her lips as her neck snapped and trying to pull him into the lake while saying "let me help you". I'm sure at the end of this I'm going to be VERY far off. What if he's Knoth? If my above theory is correct then it would explain the Knoth/Marta relationship about taking advantage of her because she isn't sinning if she's doing it for him and how she's into pickaxe-ing Blake's wiener. The light and sound could be a psychological treatment and the only way Blake can cope with his past is by imagining this reality where he is the good guy.

Y'know, Mark does raise a real question about this game, which really also applies to Outlast 1 to a lesser extent. So like, in Outlast 1 they _sort of_ explain how there could logically be SO many bodies, saying that "well its an asylum that was fully populated" But here? Sure, good effect and all but, I mean, the dead seem to outnumber the living in this tiny cult village in the middle of nowhere. And they're STILL killing everyone. How many members could this cult have possibly had? It's not like they were gaining members, they all refer to you as "The outsider" and every body you find are wearing the same clothes or have a very similar general appearance to the cultists. You never find an abandoned camera, laptop, phone, any modern clothing or tools aside from the occasional flashlights or batteries. Also, the heretics think that you're the messiah just because you aren't a fucking zombie like they are. Laird knows what a camera is despite it seeming that most of the cultists don't know shit about modern electronics. You can't satisfyingly argue that people are being born here, because they kill every child that's born and not once do you see any children anywhere. Even if you argue that the cult started at even 1000 members, they've been going I believe since the 70's. Let's be generous and say that only 1 person dies a night. this is contradictory of course as we see far more than one death in this night, mostly unrelated to your presence, but lets just say for argument's sake. Let's also say it was relatively peaceful until about 2000. Every inhabitant would still be dead by 2003. Even if you say that they stop killing all together, there's still rampant disease, no food, terrible conditions, this cult should have died out by now. But... It hasn't. I assume this is a plot oversight, but it's just such a blaring problem that it couldn't be.

This is an excellent, logical, and well thought out argument. However, considering the possibility of mind-controlling waves radiating from the towers, it is a possibility locals from nearby towns and countrysides may have been drawn in slowly/during vacations but surely providing them a constant supply - as well as the possibity of papa knoth allowing secret births, working in how having children is okay for a certain periods/a period of time in his "sermons", and offering housing to the mothers/children to keep the population, manipulation and of course the cult going for so many years. Knowing he would be almost completely excluded from the modern world if he created a cult, (going on the basis he kept his contact with the modern world mostly a secret), it should be safe to assume he made a plan of some sorts and was given more and more time with his successes proceeding him as time went on.

Mark, I'm commenting only halfway through the video so maybe you know some of this by now. The events in Outlast 2 take place shortly after the original Outlast and are in the same universe. The light that's coming from the towers is very similar, if not the same, as to what the morphogenic engine does. Whatever it is causes people to see nightmares/hallucinations of horrible things. The reason Blake sees Jessica is because that's one of the most horrific events that occurred in his life. Everything that seems supernatural or "God like" in this game is either a hallucination, or has some other type of scientific explanation behind it. I believe you missed it, but there is a note from a scientist who mentions someone (sorry can't remember the name) who works for Murkoff, as if the whole area of Templegate and the affect of the bright light is being observed by them. Also make sure to look deeper into Jessica's story because it isn't as simple as suicide. Plus Blake, Jessica, and Lynn were friends in the 4th grade, not high school.

So I got through the infanticide, the various mutilated bodies, the torture, the sexual abuse, the diseased, the handsy monster running around--but Jessica's message on the message board for depressed Catholics legit made me cry. Like, stop the video, I need to calm down. It just hit way too close to home. "Can you call the police if it's your family?" I remember after our parents separated (I was in college, my younger sister a senior in high school) and my mom got the locks changed, and still my dad would show up unexpectedly and just help himself to whatever was in the storage shed in our backyard (the yard gates latched, but didn't lock). My sister was alone in the house when he did that once, and she hid in the bathroom so he wouldn't see her through the window and try to get in. When she told me about it later, I said, "You should've called the police." She said, "What was I supposed to say? My dad's here and I'm scared?" Yeah, that's exactly what you say. I think of all the times I should've called the police when my dad was beating my mom, but he said they'd take me and my sister away. My mom had been in the foster care system, so I knew it was a thing that happened. I was just a kid. That's the weird thing about this game: all this well-written horror, but you can enjoy the scares because its not real. But out there, somewhere, there's a little girl who's afraid of her father. I'm not mad at the game or anything--I just wasn't expecting to react to it this strongly, to an element that's relatively mild, considering.
