This game still breaks my heart. This wise, all-knowing stone man watches years go by in seconds, yet he loves and values the world so much that he travels for miles, something he may have NEVER done in his life before. He enjoys watching society evolve around him, but knows he must keep going if they’ll ever survive. Finally, he makes a sacrifice that may not have killed him, but forces him to wait forever inside a volcano, to never see the sun or sky or plants or people again. But still, he’s happy, knowing that the world above will be blissfully unaware they were ever in danger. Unaware that they were ever so loved. Aaaand I just depressed myself.

I think the monument in the end is there to honor the player themselves by breaking the fourth wall-- you being the traveler between worlds (real world and game world) who has died from saving everyone from the volcano. And since it is a secret location, an easter egg, the player can be qualified as a curious person who's never satisfied with the conclusion that's handed to him, therefore the game wishes them to "find a way home", to a place where they could finally be at peace and stop looking for answers to questions that might not be there. That's why the monument is a tombstone, because it's literally the death of the player's curiosity, if you reached that point, there's nothing more you can do to explore the game. That's how I see it anyway.

"Grandpa, how long has that Statue been there?" The young child asked. The elder smiled and looked over to where the stone, silver, statue sat. It sat in the grain, some say it even planted it. "Well, 30 years ago our civilization has just started to grow. We're we ever hungry and cold, we waited for a miracle to happen. A miracle to bring us food. Then, one bright winter day, a figure came. The figure ventured far, then stood still, with a puzzled look planted on its grey face. Then it moved to another place. After a year it came back, wielding some grain. It took and planted the grain several times. Then sat and it waited... Well, for us to eat it I supposed. Even though we have but it is most likely blind due to its stone eyes." The old man shrugged. He sighed and relaxed while looking down at the youth. "That's it?" the child asked. The elder nodded his head as he chuckled. Until they both heard a yell. The child and elder rushed to open the door. And there they saw, the statue. There was a comment I read when I was watching this a few months ago that explained what this game might've been based off of. If I remember correctly, it was a folklore that went like this: - Many years ago in northern North America (or Canada before they were colonized). There lived a small tribe of native Americans and they were starving. One day, a giant rock appeared in their village and many assumed it must've gotten there while they were asleep overnight. They described this rock as having a face. And in many cases when these unnatural occurrences happened in nature, such as a rock having a face, the native Americans would worship them as signs from their gods. And in doing so, they would give them some sort of offering, and in most cases it would be food. But the tribe was starving and had little food, instead the tribe gave any food they had to their chief leader so he could live. The story varies here but it's described that the Rock with a Face did not spite the Native Americans for not giving it any offerings. And every day since it arrived in the village, it would noticeably move from its original spot by a little bit. No one could understand this phenomenon because none of them were strong enough to move the giant Rock with a Face, and if they could, they would have still been to weak from hunger to push it. 10 years later, the rock had completely vanished and none of the people knew where it went. And in its path which it moved, within their village, food was growing abundantly. Flash forward a few centuries to 2012, a group of researchers discovered a volcano in Canada. They observed that the volcano should have erupted many years ago, and if it did, a large part of North America would have been destroyed. However now that it has been so long, it is no longer active. They discovered that in one of the critical-erupting points inside of the volcano, it was blocked shut by a large rock different from the rock the volcano was made of -- and it had a face. We have no clue whether this Rock with a Face really had an impact in stopping the eruption of this volcano. However, now this folklore has been retold that the Rock with a Face was possessed by spirits of the tribe that, in one lifetime, died from the volcano and came back to protect this lifetime of themselves so they could live and so a future could exist. On top of the Rock with a Face, there were two words engraved on it, where no one could see it because they would've been too short when standing beside it. It read (American translation:) "nomad" and "universe". Anyone who is culturally and ethnically multilingual know that words can have connotative meaning that can be lost through translation. "Nomad" and "universe" could have a deeper meaning. Sorry if I got any facts wrong, like idk if native Americans worshipped gods. (Lasted edited: 06/07/17)

How is there a theory to this? it's obviously shown directly no-bullshit-style in the game. As said by Interesting After School: "Well, this is an ancient story based in some Inuit tribe beliefs in northern Canada. The Inuit people known it as a rock with a face.The belief was every year the rock would move forward. There was no logical explanation because many of the men were weak and had no food, therefore no one had the strength to push the rock. The rock came to a village and yet a tribe had only one piece of food. It was not enough to feed the village so they gave it to the chief. The next week, they found plants growing in the village. Not only that, but the rock was on the other side of the village facing toward the volcano, and it would wait. Later in a decade it was gone. Many years later when European explorers hit Canada, there was a Mountain they named Artemisia pipe. They checked to see if there what was down there. And it was a stone, a stone with a face that looked as if it were sleeping. Sources: -I'm a nerd -I like research" Please read this.

Hey I’m really late to this but I sort of have an idea of what the gravestone means? (Not that anyone will likely see this) I believe that the first two lines refer to the player them self because they are playing the game but are also in the real world. Their name is unknown because the game doesn’t know the player’s name. The third line is calling the player curious, because they were curious enough to get to the grave and take the time to get there. I’m not entirely sure about the last line, but I think it has to do with the patience of the player, and feeling like reading the grave wasn’t worth the effort (which is a bit dark but it kinda fits the theme of the game). I’m like 3 years late to this so Mark probably won’t see this, but I hope he found some sort of meaning.

Hipster Shady I think the last line means resting curiosity for this game. You may take a different approach of getting to the end, but there is no "secret happy ending", you just have to sacrifice, and leave the game. Maybe you can play again, but it's always the same. Everyone has the same two endings. You can let the fire burn, or put it out and achieve peace. And in your place, grows new life. All of this, just a metaphor of reality. For those who can't be patient.
@Wolfsquad5936 жыл бұрын

I have a theory for the second ending of the game: I think that when Mark went onto the other side of the volcano, it was like an alternate timeline or more likely a glance into the future, and the tombstone belonged to the stone character. Whether or not he chose to go into the volcano, he was going to die, so it would make sense in that case. And when it said he was a traveller between worlds, that could be a reference to the civilisation he walked through as well as the many decades/centuries he lived for. So yeah, I think that when you play this game, the "traveller between worlds" that you find at the end is you.

Wow, that went deep... Deeper than I thought a cute little pixelated game could. But anyway, about that gravestone, I think that's meant to be your character's gravestone. Think about it, it spoke of a traveler between worlds. You could argue that as years pass and things around you change and advance, you're leaving one world behind and entering another. We clearly don't know the name of this character, it's only described as a being of stone, and it could be described as curious because as it goes around and watches these changes happen, you could say that it might begin to wonder how these changes come about and what causes things to advance in society, even maybe how it becomes curious as to how to stop this calamity from happening. That's just my interpretation, but I'd love to hear other ideas. :)

"Here lies a traveler between worlds, whose name is unknown. May his curious soul find a way home, like you have found his resting place." This man both hates and loves the company that brought him in his world, away from his old family and loved ones, but in a new life without trouble and pain. This just made me so sad, it’s sadder when you actually think about how the statue lived. He set out on a mission to save humanity, planting trees and giving food to humans, only to be feared. He was lonely his whole life. Even if he was able to make a friend, he would lose them due to his immortality. He continued his journey and saved humans by sacrificing his own life, even though he was feared, discriminated. He died for those who are hateful because of how kind he is, but they most likely didn’t recognize his sacrifices. It just makes me think about how judgmental someone can be. Not even trying to learn about someones personality and only judging them on their appearance. Just my thoughts about this game, but honestly, I really wish the game showed how the humans reacted. Did they even recognize what the statue did? Did someone find him? Like, what happened afterwards?

Technically, since he is a rock, he is immortal. Therefore, the volcano's lava could not hurt him, maybe melt him at most. However, he would most likely cool down and be reformed as a new rock.

The gravestone at 11;24 is an easter egg, built from a human's point of view. 1)Since Stone Monster has seen 150 year's worth of time, stretching quite possibly from the early 1600's to the late 1700's, it was able to see multiple cultures. 2)The Stone Monster doesnt seem to be capable of language, so there was no opportunity to exchange names with anyone. 3)The Stone Monster has been wandering with no apparent aim, so it was labeled as "curious." 4)Humans don't bury their dead far away unless they have to. It seems the latest buildings from the humans seem to from the late 1700's. Although Wyoming became a state in the late 1800's, Yellowstone is the most dangerous volcano in America, and quite possibly the world. Of course, only Stone Monster can save us. --- You'll get a cookie if you thumbs up.

What if one of the stone faces of Ellis Island woke up, spread his seed for the humans, and jumped into a volcano to save the world? The humans would worship it by making more of it to help them further, right?

+CronicleBeast Wrong, and wrong. More like a couple years. I've had Staligmites form in my basement from a leaky pipe in 3 years. There are plenty of cases where they form this quickly. There's even an attraction called the tepee fountain in which a giant "Stalagmite" structure formed from a pipe in the ground after just a few decades. Although it is now almost a hundred years old I believe..
