If you’re not aware of terminology of trans-masculine individuals, you’ll likely go the entire time without knowing he’s trans. And even if you are aware, you might miss it the first time around. I know I did. It’s not even hinted at the first time you meet him. Like, it’s not even mentioned in this episode. It’s only after, if I remember correctly, one date that you get the hint. If you still don’t know what the hint is that I’m referring to, and it’s 1000% okay if you don’t, pay attention when you visit the Bloodmarch home. There’s a part where your character looks into Vincent’s closet, and it describes his clothes. It describes the collection of clothes hanging there. Most of it is gothic Victorian era attire. However, you’ll notice that they point out one additional item that doesn’t quite fit in that category: binders. Now, if you yourself aren’t trans-masculine or somehow acquainted with someone whom you know is trans-masculine, you may pass it off as a weird detail. I mean, it’s odd to keep a collection of three-ringed paper binders in your closet, but to each their own, I guess. But oh no, ladies, gentlemen, and all other configurations of being. This is no collection of high school paper organization devices, and that is only proven by the character creator options. In those, there are six options: three different body types, half of them in a tank top, and half labeled with the term “binder”. This was very clearly intentional. These people knew what they were doing. *Now for the most important part: defining a binder in THIS context. For those who are still confused about what it is exactly I’m talking about, you might want to pay attention for this part.* So, aside from a device that has three rings and holds your papers and other things, a binder is an undergarment that someone who‘s AFaB (AKA DFaB: assigned/designated female at birth) wears to flatten their chest to obtain a flatter, more “masculine” appearance. (Side note: Masculine in quotes because it’s stereotypically masculine and not all those who flatten their chests wish to present in or appear a masculine way.) Binders are not technically the only way to achieve this look, but they are the most effective and *BY FAR* the safest way. Their effectiveness varies depending on multiple factors, but it’s still a much healthier way to flatten one’s chest-at least compared to one’s natural appearance-while remaining a (relatively) much cheaper but temporary method that aides many trans-masculine individuals and makes them feel better about themselves. A binder is tight, and is made (at least the ones I’ve seen and possessed) out of a stretchy spandex-esc material with an extra layer of very much not stretchy fabric on the chest region. It is designed to evenly distribute pressure on the chest as to not over-strain one’s body. A binder most commonly looks like a tank top that only extends to about the base of the rib cage (AKA the “half-tank” style), but it also may look like a full-sized spandex tank top that is very inflexible down to about the base of the rib cage (AKA the “full-tank” style). It can come in any number of colors, though the most common are black, white, and sometimes various shades of nude (gc2b has a selection of about 6 different shades of nude ranging from both a pale peach with slight yellow or pink undertones-numbers 3 and 4 respectively-to a rather deep brown-number 1. **TL;DR** I love this game, the effort that went into it, and the representation and normalization it includes!!!!
