I was watching (live webcast) when Kipchoge broke the WR in Berlin, the race where he started with 3 pacers and then sped up after dropping the last one around halfway. He looked totally relaxed, didn't look to be moving that fast. Then they'd switch to a side-on view, and I'd notice that the background was kinda motion-blurred. Ridiculously fast. I reckon that gives me a reasonable grasp on how fast he really is, but hell yeah I'd love to have a go on the Tumbleator. No way I'd survive Kipchoge marathon pace anywhere near as long as Mark did, but I reckon I could manage 20+ mph very briefly. Got the strength and coordination, but forget about the cardio to sustain it...

But I went to support him in one of his half marathon runs (he's underaged so he cant run full marathons) and it was mesmerising watching them float on air and run in that pace for 2 hours, it inspired me to run, i blew my own mind when i ran for the first time for 20 mins straight, then 30 mins then 50??!?!?!??!?! That's exactly what I wanted to point out in this video, and other ones where this treadmill was demonstrated to the public. There is no air resistance. I have stood at the sidelines of the Berlin Marathon and watched the pros race by. Their speed is just insane, makes your hair flow from the wind they create. Equally impressive is seeing such a powerful human machine up close. The energy and the determination their aura emits is something else. The first group always consists of runners from Kenia and Ethopia, closely followed by Japanese, European and American pros. And most of them are not smiling and jogging around after crossing the finishing line. I have seen them collapsing, writhing on the road and VOMITING. At one point, there were five African runners all on their fours and vomiting simultaneously. Didn't look very healthy or glorious. But you won't see that on the news, they cut away before they collapse.

Amazing. Great effort, and it really makes you realize how fast Kipchoge ran, for so long. It's utterly insane. And let's also not forget that on a treadmill you don't have to drive your body forward and you don't have to fight wind resistance. You just have to keep up with the pace of the treadmill, while your body remains at a literal standstill. My personal mile time increases by about 30 seconds in real life versus on a treadmill. That's how big a difference it is.

By way of comparison, I was a national level decathlete a few decades back. Ran a 2.36km time trial once and ran 4.30 for the 1500m a few times in Decathlons, which is above average. Rested I could run the 2.51 min / km pace for probably 4.5 mins if fresh. No wind resistance might help a bit. I expect you'll get similar results for elite Soccer players and Australian footballers who are midfielder types, with the odd exception for those with a history in middle distance competition. Mark Blicavs, playing his 250th AFL game this week is an exception. Former 3k steepler could run sub 4 minute 1500m when he started playing Aussie Rules football. He'd have lasted maybe 15 mins, similar for most top triathlon runners.
