Spend the cold winters in The Algarve Portugal it's cheaper than you might think. Escape the snow of Canada or Northern USA and enjoy spring like climate in the south of Portugal on the famous Algarve. Winters can be very pleasant for Norther Europeans and British retired people to spend months away from cold and damp weather.
The Algarve has plenty of choice from bustling cities like Albufeira, Faro and Lagos to laid back small villages and towns Alvor, Tavira, Quarteira and Ferragudo. Winter is especially nice because there are no crowds, no rowdy football fans just mainly retired North Americans and Europeans. How Much Is Winter In The Algarve Portugal we show you we have broken down the costs of staying a month in The Algarve, from the cost of rental apartments, car rental, restaurants and groceries. We give examples of flights from Toronto to Faro direct on Air Transat and TAP Air Portugal via Lisbon.
If you are curious about the Cost For One Month Winter In The Algarve we have the answers.

I love the off-season in the Algarve, and this year prices seemed lower than in previous years (covid?). We just got back form a month there. We are coming from the Netherlands so our flights are much cheaper and we found a great 1 bedroom place with a pool, 5 minutes to the beach in Quarteira for €1100. We do the same thing you did with the car, the little kiosk in P4 is so much cheaper than the big-name companies at the other end of the airport. We always wind up with a small 4-door car with AC and manual transmission, but it's great for parking and fuel costs. The supermarkets are superb, many fresh ingredients, prepared meals, roasted chickens, and more at good prices. Baked goods were particularly cheap, many prices under €0.50 for ham and cheese pastries for breakfast. If you are on an extreme budget there are also nice options for lunch, for example, the Continente store has decent take-and-bake pizzas for less than €2. For that cost, you get pepperoni and a veggie, but my wife and I usually buy some mushrooms, arugula, and green peppers and add it to the pizza. Wine is spectacularly cheap so we can have a decent enough lunch with wine and fresh-baked pizza for €5 for the 2 of us! We also found many local places run set lunch specials in the €6-8 range. The malls are great, but they also have very affordable food courts, and several offer local soups and flavors. It's not spectacular eats, but a solid value and not the penalty box a foodcourt in a North American mall is!

Hi Tina and Norm: we enjoy this and your other videos. My wife and I are in an apartment hotel in Albufeira right now after a flight from Calgary to Lisbon via Amsterdam. Things are wonderfully open here in Portugal due to a 98% double vaccination rate for eligible 12 year and up Portuguese (see the New York Times three weeks ago) with no fourth wave. There are plenty of Dutch, British and French tourists here but sadly only two other Canadians. Rental cars, however, are double normal prices.
@ThisIsOurRetirement
@ThisIsOurRetirement 2 жыл бұрын
Yes we read about the Admiral who was in charge of Portugal’s vaccine he did a great job. The problem we see is the amount of visitors from other European countries, Germany and UK are having a spike in covid cases and we believe that is where the risk will come from. Also we were vaccinated in April with second shot in June, these antibodies according to medical people have all but disappeared leaving only the memory cells to react to this virus. Booster shots look like a temporary solution so that is what we are waiting for. It’s great you are there and having a nice time, most Canadians we know tend to go to The Algarve January to May. Thanks for watching we really appreciate your support.

Hi Norm & Tina. Thanks for another great video. We travel exactly as you do (minus the car rental) and it’s amazing the wonderful vacations we’ve had across Europe without breaking the bank. We just love Portugal - the people are friendly and helpful - they are proud of their country and it shows. We all have to educate ourselves as best we can when visiting another country, but we never felt that business owners in Portugal were out to rip us off (which we have felt in other European countries). We really hope to travel there again in March 2022. Hubby is ready to book flights and accommodations right now, I’m still a bit hesitant but we may have to hold our noses and just do it. Chips fall where they may. Keep up the great work!

We love Portugal,my wife and I have been many times. We’ve stayed in Albufeira but some years ago drove to Alvor,staying at the Dom Jao 11 hotel. and it’s our favourite resort. Silves a town in land from Alvor,20 or so minutes drive has the best piri piri, bbq chicken restaurant for miles,nothing grand or expensive but the food and wine are delicious. Looking forward to going back next year.

Also, face masks are required only on public transit here in Portugal and nowhere else, e.g. on the day tours we booked and in the bottom of the On/Off tour busses but not as guests in restaurants and at a fado music evening. However, the hotel and restaurant employees all wear masks and respect proper COVID safety protocols. Our outdoor and indoor pools at our Albufeira apartment hotel are open and being used by guests with reservations and a restriction of no more than ten people at a time. It’s lovely here!

I am living in France but I am portuguese. I am 60 years old and lived 23 years there. Next time you go to Portugal, please don't forget to visitt the "Fuseta" beach. If I had to choose the three most beautiful beaches ones out there, Fuseta would be one of them, may be be the first. When you go there, you must take a boat with lots of people, litle boat, it costs 1 euro. Very nice. There's one every 15 minutes. You can also take a taxi boat, it costs 7 euros each total, but I see no point in doing this. This beach is near Olhao. Olhao also deserves some inspection, there are an old lovely town and many bars from a few metres from the sea and litle boats, market, etc. There's a nice restaurant where you eat like kings for 7 euros, all included. Not for tourists... I can't say the name now, but I can check it for you if you want. Thank you for the nice video, take care. Francisco

Unfortunately, we visited Madeira with the hopes of retiring there but one look at the road system changed our minds instantly. Too many steep hills with drop-offs immediately off the edge of the road of hundreds of feet straight down were too much for us. We even booked full-day tours from local tour companies for most of the days to let the locals drive instead of us having to drive. Beautiful island but not unfortunately for us.

Currently in the Old Village Vilamoura since October. 2 bed 2 bath at €737 a month all expenses including wifi and TV. 10 minutes to grocery stores and 20 minutes to Marina. Moving to a 2 bed condo in Quarteira 3 minutes to the beach at €750 per month all in. We will have our own mailbox and will spend 7 months each year there. Sure beats the Ottawa weather. MEO cell phone plan with 10GB of data at €27 per month. Life is good!! We used TAP and did the layover in Lisbon. It was ok.

@@ThisIsOurRetirement Found our current place by luck while in Canada. It's through a UK property management company called Live'n Holidays. The grounds are beautiful but each unit is individually owned. Ours just hasn't been renovated so it's only ok. That's why we are moving. Before we get to Quarteira we will stay in a fully renovated studio owned by our new landlord. It is beautiful and just next door. Lots of room. As for the condo, just got lucky again. Got a shuttle to DHL and got talking to the driver. He knew the guy with the condo and we got in touch that way. Went for a look and it was perfect for our needs. He just has the one condo though. We finally got approved for our residency visa. I went to DHL to courier our passports to the Embassy of Portugal in Ottawa. They will attach the visas and send them back. They were very helpful. Just had to provide a pile of info. We arranged for our NIF numbers before leaving Canada. And we have opened a bank account here, also easy. I did have a lot of luck, but I also spent a lot of time following leads on the internet. Hope this has been helpful.

Sounds great just to clarify you are going to live in Canada 🇨🇦 for 5 months , then Portugal 🇵🇹 for 7 months to still keep OHIP and OAS ? We are thinking you have a house or apartment in Canada . Which residency visa did you apply for , that allows to do this as we would also like to do that but didn’t think you could still live in both places like what you are going to do . We hope you have a wonderful stay and great weekend Cheers 🍷🇵🇹🍺🇨🇦

@@ThisIsOurRetirement 7 months in Portugal and 5 in Canada. Then we don't have to re enroll in OHIP. Not sure what visa they gave us, but I don't think it's a D7. Still expect to have to have to do the whole SEF interview thing. I wanted a D7 but the Embassy seemed to think we might be able to get something more permanent. We'll just have to wait and see. We sold our home because home prices got crazy and we sold over asking in 1 day. We bought a 41 foot Jayco at the lake 5 minutes from our old home. Our family is still there. The trailer is new with an add a room, shed, gazebo, and the yard is bigger than at the house. The yard has a pond and we have a lake view. Quite perfect for us. Kind of got lucky with that too. Went to see and older unit and this one just became available on the day we were there so we grabbed it. You may want to check AXA for travel insurance. And we will probably use Victoria for supplemental private insurance. The broker is Abbeygate here in Portugal. It meets our age requirements.

Some great tips for travelling to Algarve, Portugal. Interesting about the costs between hotels and Air B&Bs. €10.50 is good value of a dish of the day. You would never see me walk in a MacDonalds. And the beauty of Albufeira is, that unless you really NEED a car, want to tour, or have s real problem with the hills, then no real need to hire. Public transport is reasonable and available to reach other major locations and around town. It doesn't tend to be like UK, standing and shivering in the rain awaiting a late bus. Just walk everywhere 😀. Not surprised if prices are high. I'd think it is going to be same in restaurants, bars and hotels for some time to come. There have been so much financial loss created by government, one can hardly blame small company owners , especially, from attempting to claw back losses and profitability.
