Mark O'Connor, Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas and Mark Schatz.

Bela Fleck - banjo
Jerry Douglas - dobro
Mark Schatz - bass
Recorded 1987; Kentucky Educational Television's "The Lonesome Pine Specials"; recorded at the Kentucky Center for the Arts; producer Richard Van Kleeck; director Clark Santee.

Chick Corea Spain, this may just be the best rendition of Chick's epic song. It always puts a smile on my face.

Jimi Hendrix was an innovative, visceral, and colorful artist. Mark O'Connor is badass, as are Bela & Jerry. Great energy here - I'm proud and lucky to have been a part of it!

Thanks! I've been playing with Claire Lynch for the past several years; check out the projects I'm on with her: Whatcha Gonna Do, Dear Sister, Holiday, and North By South. Also proud to be on Sarah Jarosz's latest project, Undercurrent. -Mark

Thanks for the reply, Mark. I'm working my way through the Claire Lynch albums, and they are great. I've heard her on WNCW radio, but I didn't know you were in the band. Man, that's good stuff. Such solid playing. And I have been a fan of Sarah Jarosz since I heard her do Bob Dylan's "Ring Them Bells." That new album is an interesting turn for her, but I think it's beautiful. Again, thanks for the conversation. You are, indeed, one of my musical heroes.

Mark really kicks ass on guitar. Not given any where near the credit he deserves as guitarist due to his expertise on fiddle.

Amen to that! I saw Mark perform at the summer California Live Oak Festival in the Santa Ynez Valley in the late 90's. Following the live premier of his ensemble chamber musical score for the then soon-to-be-released PBS TV special "Liberty!", he picked up his.guitar, and with a surprisingly modest and humble advance apology to the audience (for starting a solo departure on his OTHER instrument), he seated himself and proceeded to just let it rip on that guitar of his. But I already knew what might expect, having previously seen him perform in town as Tony Rice's young replacement in David Grisman's Quintet in the early 80s. RIP Stefan Grappelli, who I also saw perform on that earlier first occasion and... of course, RIP Tony Rice

I think he’s referring to marky mark. But seriously, I can’t believe how great he is, only then to put down the guitar for some number of decades. He plays superb mando too. Search for John Hartford’s old time riverman live version with vassar, tony, and more greats

Hendrix was a major innovator in several areas: (1) Rhythm guitar (2) Guitar effects (3) Recording studio as musical instrument (4) Lead, rhythm, and vocals at the same time (5) Fashion and style (6) Songwriting (7) Changing musical styles between albums Hendrix only released three albums during his life, and he was only well-known for about three years before he died. He's actually underrated, because there are still people who hear him making some nasty feedback-drenched noise on stage and have no idea that he did anything else. It's easy to be "better" than someone when you come after them. Any working physicist these days is "better than Newton", but that doesn't diminish what Newton did. BTW, really great version of Spain !
