One of the best and incredible railway bridges ever seen in person or via u tube or other electronic media. What an engineering feat. Trust, constant and frequent inspection must be diligently being done.

In 2005 I travelled from Mandalay to Lashio passing over this viaduct. I was lucky to board engine for better view. To be honest, it was most hair raising journey I have ever undertaken. Engine driver did not allow me to make video. So I made one from ground. I have posted on You Tube.

Went to Burma in 1977, got as far as Maymyo (Now named Pyin oo Lwin). Back then Gokteik bridge was off limits

Maintenance? No lighting, no handrails, every second refuge has no floor plates, the track approaching and leaving covered in undergrowth so thick it is classed as overgrowth! Even the sign at the end of the bridge says... "Congratulations, you made it!" Needs a bit more work Benedikt. Stay safe and happy.

@@GaryNumeroUno i also have seen the -negative - sides on the line. like you mentioned, no plating on more or less every second platform on the bridge.. who knows why? lack of money.? do we know? MOST PROBABLY THEY ARE WORKING ON A STRING BUDGET AND DO WHAT THEY CAN DO...

Hopefully the corrupt government and military may give a bit of money back to the people they are sworn to protect and get the tracks and bridge repaired to an acceptable standard. In my view the builders of this technological marvel deserve the Nobel Prize for Daring Challenges!!! By the way, it's nothing short of a miracle that this bridge survived the Second World War.....The Road to Mandalay reminds me of Rudyard Kipling. I wonder if the bridge was in his mind when he wrote about the white man's burden?

Sorta reminds me of the Huey P Long bridge in Jefferson Parish Louisiana! Big high and long except the Huey P has a long turn at the end! Only one train as far as I know ever derailed on the bridge and it was from a wind storm that blew 3 train cars over the side! When they hit the ground it sounded like a really big bomb went off! Thank God none of the cars were carrying chemicals or explosive gases or oil!

However, Mr. Robinson and the viewers will be amazed to know that during British India, a fearless Bengali surveyor Pramadaranjan Roy visited this place and walked down the stretch even while the bridge was under construction and the wooden slippers were not nailed!

It would appear that the towers were built to accommodate a second track, and its girders, if deemed necessary. It appears this second track was either never installed, or removed?

That steel looks to be in remarkable shape, especially in that saturated environment. I don't understand how things built of concrete and steel over a hundred years ago holds up better than things built last mid-century.
