Ion 1950's Futuristic Flying Wing - Pt9: Manifold fitting & Custom Exhaust- By O.F.W. (Peter) Fisher

The Ion Mk is a great looking flying wing from 1957, designed by O.F.W. Fisher and English designer and owner of Performance Kits. He was often known as Peter Fisher. The Ion has a 33" wingspan and was originally a free flight model powered by a Frog 80 diesel engine, however in this build it will be converted to 2 channel RC. The original design had elevons, used to give some reflex to the wing and they could be used to adjust the trim. In this build series these elevons will be servor controlled.

Morning Mark. Wonderful build series you producing. Relatively recently discovered your content. I truely loved the Tomboy senior build - plus your flying wing crash re-build. Fantastic attention to detail. As a British modeller of pretty much similar age to you - its nice to keep learning new tricks and tips. This week I acquired lots of square steel metal blocks - after watching you use them. Not sure how I've built model planes this long with them. 👍

The Kingcat Deluxe diesel came with a similar exhaust pipe. I have run mine with and without it, noticing precious little difference in sound level or performance, but it certainly gives a different look. Unfortunately it does just go straight back, so still sends oil over the model. A later exhaust variant included an expansion chamber that is more effective in reducing noise.

Hi David, thanks for the comment. The Kingcat does look great with that exhaust, but as you say going straight back is not the most helpful. Never seen the exhaust with the expansion chamber, I will have to look it up. 😀

wow great muffler.. but if you could use a small can in place of the pipe the sound would have been reduced... to tell you I just love the engine... it can never be replaced with electric motor..

Another cracking video Mark - thank you for taking the time to produce them. Does fitting the silencer make starting more difficult as I assume you can’t prime it through the port. Do you just choke it or squirt fuel down the venturi instead?

Perhaps I have missed it, but when using beam mountings for an IC engine, if a small angle of side thrust is called for, how to you mark and drill the bearers to an accuracy of less than 1 degree?

I would drill the holes in the beam slightly bigger than the mounting bolts so the engine can be moved side to side a little and adjust as required
