i have shrimp in my tank with a few guppies and a rescue cory and otto, this is my 2nd time keeping shrimp. the first time i kept them in my one tank with some black skirt tetras and i noticed 1 at a time they were being eaten. i was worried about other fish eating them so i set up my shrimp tank. after 2 months i was a little worried theyd die off and not have any baby shrimp. now i have like hundreds its so cool!

You're absolutely correct about baby shrimp being the food. My yellow shrimp gave birth and only 2 survived to become big and noticeable.Oh and I have a pair of guppies and a pair of saimese algae eaters in the tank which will be removed...soon 😀
@MarkShellyAquatics2 жыл бұрын
Lol yep, shrimp getting ate definitely slows down colony growth. I used to think I had lots of shrimp when I kept them with endlers and guppies, then I took out the endlers and guppies and BOOM, loads of shrimp.
@amym.48232 жыл бұрын
Wow! So even the tiny fish gobble up your baby shrimp? Thanks for the tip. I was going to leave my Endlers in the tank my new shrimp are destined for, but now I think I will move the fish out before the shrimp arrive.

Each tank is different, its not set in stone. I usually reset 20 gallon tanks every 6 months or so and start with around 20 to 30 shrimp. Sometimes I'll pull out 300, sometimes close to 1000, usually around 500.

I'm sure it's a stupid question. But why does the tank has to be that deep? It doesn't seem like they are swimming high anyway. They are pretty much just at the bottom. Low plants exists.

Thanks for the informative videos Mark! Mark, I have a question according to the algae on the wall... in my 60L tank my algae color are BROWN unlike your tanks (green algae)... is there are any tips to make a green algae? Because I heard that brown algae in shrimp tank is actually a bad?...
@MarkShellyAquatics2 жыл бұрын
Too many factors based on whats in your water to know what kind of algae, and to be honest I don't really know lol. Brown diatom algae on glass isn't bad though, I have a couple tanks right now that have some brown diatom algae on glass and shrimp love to graze on it.

I have few questions about fish and tank requirement, what kind fish you recommend for shrimp other than bottom dwellers fish like pleco? I had some shrimp only tank long ago and had issues with mosquito larvae so right try put some rasbora galaxy since they smallest and most shy fish I can find it perfect to keep mosquito away is that good choices?. Secondly what your tank requirement for shrimp, are you setting it like aquascape with fertilizer and bacteria home substrate layer or just simple one layer sand? My last experience with shrimp they more success with aquascape tank with crushed lava rock substrate compared simple one with fine river sand and breeding well but they somehow dies simultaneously for unknown reason. Lastly are oxygen aerator is necessary? Or should I just leave it to plant for it.
@MarkShellyAquatics Жыл бұрын
Ideally for the shrimp, it would be 100% shrimp, my new caridina tank that I have lots of money invested in is only 100% shrimp nothing else. I have lots of snails, so I welcome the snails, with so many snails I never see issues with planaria and hydra. Also to keep the unwanted critters out of shrimp only tanks be very very strict with what you put into your tank. Thats how you're gonna get those nasties 99% of the time.

What kind of light do you suggest for a 10 gallon tank?
@MarkShellyAquatics2 жыл бұрын
If you are on a budget an 18 inch aquaneat works. On a 10 you should be looking for LED lights that are around 15 to 20 watts, the stronger the light the less amount of time you want to leave your light on per day. I haven't had a 10 gallon tank in a long long time so can't really tell you from experience with the lights of today. My last 10 was a high tech desk top with co2, daily ferts, and like 2 of the old curly cue bulbs that would say 100w equivalent lol. Grew dwarf chainsword and dwarf hair grass carpets in that tank, it was a tank I really enjoyed. Probably close to 20 years ago now lol.

@MarkShellyAquatics2 жыл бұрын
I would imagine it would depend on what type of cory to some extent. I wouldn't think corys would be horrible, but I'm sure corys would eat some shrimp. I have never kept shrimp with corys so cant say for sure.
