Great Video! I learned sliding because of this tutorial a year ago. This is T H E advice for sliding/snapping. But i can tell you that there are wheels you cant slide! If youre looking for wheels which are REALLY a dream for sliding on a surfskate but keeping the gripping performance if you need it: Orangatang fat free yellow 86a and the absolutly best sliding wheel ever - the Powel Peralta Dragon G-Bones 64 mm 93a! I will never ride any other wheels again than these.

I agree - there are no "magical wheels" which will suddenly make you slide if you couldn't initiate a slide previously. The center of mass is another crucial factor - the more upright you hold your body the more likely your inertia will pull you off the board, and in order to prevent this people will be too slow and initiate too reluctantly rather than lowering their center of mass. Going low makes the slide way more stable and controlled, and I noticed that pushing yourself slightly up out of your knees the moment you want to initiate sliding just as if you would want to do a little jump but without actually lifting your feet from the board takes your weight from your wheels just long enough to lose grip.

Thank You , I have fell on my elbow twice trying to slide on the roundhouse’s. Not good too upright , quick small slide then lockup then inertia throwing me down. Happened two weeks ago on the beach caught sand on the beach park concrete then got thrown down when the wheels stuck again. Too old too have bad technique and to get banged up 😮😕

Great video about sliding and it applies to longboarding sliding too. According to my personal experience (downhill longboarding), the properties (stiffness, e.g., 75A vs 84A, and lips of wheels) do make a difference for sliding based upon just my personal experience in downhill - not in your SurSkate domain. But, of course, as your demo explained, the key is in shifting the weight to the "pivoting" foot over the the top of front truck's axial. Another thing is that I used my regular 50-degree longboard 10-inch trucks to make them extremely loose like even rattling. The behavior of the toe-hill board gives me all the similar to SurfSkate specialized board for me to carve like surf-skating in the downhill (or like using a very short snowboard over a snowy mountain). Thanks. Cheers!

This helped me get my slides going - thanks so much! Is there a difference between learning to snap and powerslide? I find that I'm getting some progress on frontside snaps, but I still can't powerslide on a cruiserboard, and am now wondering if I'm mistaken in believing they are similar moves.
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer2 жыл бұрын
Some people use the term interchangeably but I think there is a difference. A snap is more about quickly swinging the back around and then getting it back into alignment - It comes from surfing. With a powerslide, it is more of a skateboard/longboard trick - I see it more like you are trying to sit in the slide and get all 4 wheels sliding. Much harder to powerslide on soft cruiser wheels unless you are on slick terrain.

Honestly, with this though surface you will need to optimize your weight on the front truck and the optimal range is so narrow, as we saw that at 5:55, that will normally not able to hit the sweet spot and it will hurt your upper leg muscle with more repetitions. It will take more time to master that sweet spot and not easy to remember most of the time.
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer2 жыл бұрын
Let me clarify that I am not advocating that you should be practicing slides stationary with roundhouse wheels on a gym mat. It was a way to demonstrate how the unweighting technique can be used to slide with almost any wheels on almost any terrain. Too many people were under the impression that they needed a certain wheel to be able to slide. Adding in forward rolling movement and less grippy ground surface will really open that range.
@konohaguy2 жыл бұрын
May be a dumb question. Does this work on a normal skateboard?
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't think so completely because a regular skateboard doesn't lean enough to unweight the wheels on the opposite rail, but the principle of getting your weight over the front trucks to slide the back should hold true.
@siryusmusic Жыл бұрын
the technique you show doesnt work on a surfboard, you basically put your weitght on the front foot while not even parallel to the "lip" and slide your tail around. this does work easily on concrete, but in the water you had to push your fins all the way around while having no traction in the front. its more surfing like if you initiate the slide way later with more emphasis on the back foot to push. just my toughts on that
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer Жыл бұрын
You are right, my video is to help people struggling to slide their wheels on a surfskate, it is not intended to teaching surfing technique.
@nicolaswilliengton67922 жыл бұрын
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer2 жыл бұрын
I understand what you are saying and you are right, however, as with all of my content, I am teaching people how to slide on a SurfSkate as its own discipline, not how to use a SurfSkate to learn to snap a surfboard in the water. Some people use a SurfSkate just for surf training, but more people use it just for fun and I think those that know how to surf will know not to dig their nose in the water! Living where I do, where I have seen the ocean only once in the last two years, I am not positioned to teach about using a SurfSkate as a surf trainer. Someone like Kale Brock would be a better resource in that regard. But thank you for pointing out this important distinction!
@rawnajaaris2 жыл бұрын
Great tip! can you also demo this with the decathlon carve540? I thought in your video review on that board, you mentioned that it was only capable of slides in those indoor type of skateparks with smooth non-cemented flooring? I'm really struggling to get slides with this board.
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer2 жыл бұрын
That is a really good point, and one of the issues with the carve 540 isn't just the wheels but the wheelbase and wheel location. Because the front trucks are so close to the nose it is tougher to get your foot right over the front wheels to unweight the back without getting into a somewhat awkward stance. I think this tip would help still, but it is part of the reason I am not a huge fan of deck designs where the front trucks are right up against the nose.

Do you have any tips for sliding a yow because whenever I slide it the board just nose dives when I bring it back
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer Жыл бұрын
It might just be a matter of lots of practice and repetition, but it could also be your body positioning. The YOW system has a bigger offset of the axles, so you want your front foot and weight over the axles of the wheels, not over the bolts when you are unweighting. As long as your front foot isn’t in front of the wheels, it shouldn’t nose dive. So try scooting your foot back a touch and lots of practice. Fine tune your weighting and positioning as you go and make note of how your board reacts to those small changes.

Concave wheels have less contact patch than normal wheels am i wrong? You have less weight to pull no? I have been struggling with my slides and it seems that "grabbing" your board with your backfoot while shifting weights helps a lot. I think you did the same. Please help!
@MarktheLandlockedSurfer2 жыл бұрын
In a way you are right and in a way you are wrong! When you look at concave wheels, it looks like only the edges are touching the ground, but when you are on your board, those thin lips squish down beneath your weight and act almost like a plunger, making them very grippy. Also, you made a great observation: hanging your toe or heel over the edge to get extra leverage is very effective at putting some more power into your slides.

What trucks are you using? It should be okay on most systems as long as you don't get in front of the front axels. The tips here are more about shifting your upper body weight forward rather than shifting your foot position, but if you have a long wheelbase or a board with the trucks right at the nose (I don't like those designs partially for that reason) then you may need to shift your feet too.
