I've worked as a photojournalist for the past 35 years. When I need a small, pocketable setup, I use my A5100 (24mp) and a Kamlan 50mm f/1.1 (great for portraits). Take your time (use focus peaking, bracket your exposures), and you will be stunned with the results. Thanks for this excellent video, Mark.

@@sweetphilly2 Focus peaking means that the camera indicates in colour on the display which areas of the image are currently in focus while you are focusing manually. Another aid is the focus magnifier, which allows you to enlarge a section of the image in order to focus even better. Exposure bracketing means that you take several pictures with different exposure times or use the exposure compensation function to take a number of pictures (3 - 5). You then either select the best exposed image or merge the images to create an image with a so-called high dynamic range.

the a5100 is a big step forward. i got one last September brand new in a sealed box with one-year warranty for 11,000THB (313USD at that time). perfect for experimenting with CCTV lenses like the Fujian 35mm 1.4 and all the fantastic manual lenses by Brightin Star, Risespray, 7Artisans, TTartisan... edit: the focus peaking comes in very handy in absence of the viewfinder.

That is an understatement! The a5100 is a bad camera, compared to what Sony has today, even on the entry-level. It has decent autofocus, awful ergonomics, and a lack of buttons and a reduced customisability. But it's tiny, ultra-cheap used, and has a flash and a good touchscreen to put your focus point! The a6000 is the much more useful camera, in autofocus and ergonomics, despite not having a touchscreen. However, compared to the a5100, the a5000 is a garbage camera for not much lower price, and the NEX-5T for instance (one of the best of the NEXs) is awful as well - has that old techonolgy of touchscreen, which is awful and semi-responsive.

Last year I had this exact camera and the a6000. One thing that the a5000 beats the a6000 is in the grip. I LOVED how the a5000 felt in my hands, something I did not felt while holding the other one. In every other aspect the a6000 is the superior camera. The a5000 is truly compact, with a pancake lens you are having a mini Ricoh. The problem with it is the lack of buttons and dials to change settings. I did configured it in a way to quickly access the menu and switched between Av and Tv. I even took both the a6000 and the a5000 to cover for a kids birthday party as requested by a friend. Sucked at night time but I got the 28-70mm zoom on the a6000 and the 50 1.8 on the a5000 and still got great pics with them when light was still around.

I appreciate your commentary about the advances in camera sensor tech, as to videography vs still photography. There's so much BS online about "outdated" "obsolete" cameras - that are absolutely NOT even if they are (gasp!!!) ten years old. I enjoy it when someone shows some love for these "old" Sony cameras. I own some newer and "fancier" ( and more co$tly) Sony cameras - and also still shoot with a NEX-6. It has an EVF, so although not quite as small as the a5000 and with an older 16mp sensor, I stick with it. I enjoy putting an excellent lens on the NEX-6 because like the a5000 you can get some fine captures that way.

Great points!!! I love the way that U're different from the rest of the KZbinrs especially those jumping on promoting every single latest, greatest n most expensive gears! I'm a serious photographer and until now, I still can't justify for replacing my Sony A6000 (which I brought in 2014, sorry Sony) ... and I can take any photos just about as good as any latest cameras! The main reason is, in today's digital age, the camera itself is just a light capturing device and once the image is captured into 1s n 0s digitally, one can easily manipulate the image computationally ... whether it is lens distortions, noise, saturations, colors, sharpness, contrast, len boken and etc! I sincerely hope more people who are seriously into photography spend more time into studying lightings, composition, perspective, post production and developing one's artistic style to become a great photographer rather than focusing endlessly on the gears ... and leave changing every latest cameras and lens to the gear-heads!!!

Any old Sony APS-C camera that you can find for a low price is a good idea because you won't have to replace lenses if you move to an A6700. Tamron 18-300 is undoubtedly the greatest bargain lens for photography, and Sigma 10-18 is best for wide angle. For videographers, the Sony 18-105 power zoom and Sony 10-20 power zoom are excellent lenses. For novices who wish to combine both photography and filmmaking, the 18-105 power zoom is the greatest option for affordability and quality and versatility.

The latest tech is not always optimal unless you are a high end pro. My criteria for camera shopping is that the results have to at least beat my phone, which I already have all the time. An alternative for me needs to be super portable, lightweight, rugged, superior resolution (not necessarily 40mp with higher storage needs and processing requirements), excellent single battery life, AF and 4k video for crisp viewing. I like the idea of a good relatively inexpensive quality camera just to grab and go, without the worry of damage or theft, just to be available anytime. I'm also poor and always looking for a deal. Thanks!

Great video! I'm looking to get back into photography after a few years away. Is there a telephoto lens you would recommend? Strongly considering this or the A6000 since I do like a viewfinder. THANKS!

By the way, this camera may not be great for _recording_ video, but it's a nice, inexpensive tool to use for streaming instead of a traditional webcam (because in such setup the camera is just 'watching'). Cheers! //Rick

You mentioned the lens Mount is the same. That’s a huge pro for Sony cameras.

Are you saying that unless we buy an extra lense it isn't good to take pictures? I have no idea how to put a lense on. I need to take pictures for ebay. I had a pixpro fz53.

I still have my NEX7 and it is a great camera but I use my a6600 the most. No need to upgrade to a6700.

Sure is cheap, but add a few $$ and go for a5100. After research on facilities and prices, invested £356 in A6000 with PZ 16-50mm. 30 days to try and compare with current kit. Tempted by the Brightin Star f/0.95.

Ok wasn’t a hundred bucks for me but I picked one up anyways. It’s a super little camera! I even put my sigma 600 on it and it worked great. Thanks for the pointer for a nice lite little camera!

I have the a6100, gave my a6000 to my ex. I’m still trying to look at all the photos that camera took! 11fps I think. Took great photos in low light at a sweet 16 and Quienseñera. I do have Canon 5D mark III, 1DS mark III, but I feel more comfortable with Sony’s low light capabilities.

Whoa this is a gem! This would likely work with as a webcam camera as well right? Just slap like a rokinon 12mm on that bad boy and call it a day.

The LAST purpose for me to buy a camera would be photos. Anything can take photos and I barely care. But my reasons for buying a current model is VIDEO. Its worth every penny.

Fantastic Video, just about to replace my A6000 and is wanderings which camera I should get as replacement! Since the sensors are just about the same, I simply go with the most budget friendly. Video & frames per second are not huge factors for my basic use!

Don't do it! Keep your a6000. I sold mine and regretted it. Ended up buying another one. If it was weather resistant, it would be the perfect apsc pocket camera.

I just unlocked the software and gave it a clean HDMI output on my A5000. Then I donated it to my local Comedy Club for their video recording. It's a great camera, but I want to learn with a better one now.

A very interesting channel. I have recently purchased some of your recommended cheap lenses. Also the X-T1. Going cheap and vintage is a way to go, if the mainstream hype seems to be going over the top £6000 cameras & 10,000 lenses. Nice work.

Some good ideas for a basic apsc Sony E mount system. I'm still using A mount but looking to go to E mount eventually if my micro four thirds system doesn't work out for some reason. Micro four thirds is probably the best affordable alternative to the the Sony apsc E mount system.

A5100 has very decent HD and better than some 4K models when they shoot HD. It also has slightly better AF taken from the A6000 too.

This model was my 1st real camera about 12 or 13 years ago. Honestly, I didn't like it because of the lack of EVF. I traded it in to get a discount on the Sony a6000

This camera can take good photos, but the screen is horrible that I can't see if the photo is under exposed or over exposed. Also me being an absolute novice doesn't help.

Thanks for sharing! I wanted to learn photography. So I got a used Sony A7s2. Then lens I got with it was damaged. I thought buying a zoom lens would help me practice diversely with different focal lengths. The thing is I don't keep my camera with me. I should have got a fixed focal length lens (which would have also been smaller) and a smaller camera so that I can keep this handy with me always. I need to practice more and more. The setup I have currently I just don't carry with me. Keeping in mind I want to click pictures in low light during evening and night after office, please share some suggestions for a body and lens to have with me everyday.

I went and looked it up on google before I watched the video. Y’all better order while they’re cheap 😂 I’d buy one but I need a full frame. I may go with the canon 1ds mark ii for my 50 mm portraits

Hey Mark! I’ve been a longtime fan of yours. I was wondering what you think the best lens for cinematic video would be for the Canon m50. I’m looking to invest in a cinematic lens for film in the $1000 or less range. I’m also looking for a lens that would be a good “one size fits all,” meaning that it would be a good main lens that could stand alone in my small collection. Thanks!

With no EVF, with my ageing eyesight I'd need a bright rear display. I rejected the RX 100 because its tiny size made it too difficult to handle. But I love this camera's simplicity. Any alternative recommendations?
