Snatch is easily my favorite movement but getting the grip right is crucial. I'm still struggling with it not ripping my hands open. Met with a SF coach last month for a one-on-one session to work on it and I think I have the idea now. I wouldn't be upset if you had a short video focusing just on the problems people have with the snatch grip and why they tend to rip their hands.

I have three different weights for different exercises. i.e. 20lb kettlebell for Turkish Get-up and 24kg for swings. I do my cleans, squats, and snatches with a 35lb kettlebell. Someday, maybe everything will be with the 24kg but I'm in no rush. At 68 years of age, my core is the strongest it has ever been and I can attest to the fact that I NEVER have back pain anymore. Oh, and btw, Mark Wildman changed my life with these videos.

You also have two different weight measurement systems, which is confusing.

@@lewisham The two kettlebells that I referenced in pounds, were purchased as such. The 24kg kettlebell was purchased the same. I believe the 24kg roughly equates to 52lbs. Sorry for the confusion but that was why I described them that way.

I love the KB snatch. I recently regained enough strength (after a couple of abdominal surgeries in 2022) to enjoy it again. It makes me feel strong, good cardio, just a FANTASTIC workout.

It's all about builidng volume. If you can snatch 10kg for 3 sets of 10 reps, try doing 5 sets of 7. Then 6 sets of 6. Then 5 sets of 8. Then 6 sets of 7. Then 5 sets of 9. Then 6 sets of 8. Then 5 sets of 10. 6 sets of 9. 7 sets of 8. 6 sets of 10. 7 sets of 9. 6 sets of 11. 7 sets of 10. 9 sets of 8. 7 sets of 11. 8 sets of 10. 7 sets of 12. etc. Just gradually build up lots of volume. If you go from 3 sets of 10 to 10 sets of 10, bump up the size of your bell. You might do a workout like that 3 x per week and bump up a level once per week, or once every 2 weeks if the soreness really accumulates.

The one kettlebell exercises you don't talk about is a crossbody swing but in the back of you like a low swing in the back of you that ends at the side of you and can be transitioned with a low pendulum swing in the front across you.

Who doesn't love Snatch? As an old surfer, it builds all the right types of strength and conditioning as well as range of motion and coordination. Generally however, i don't like more than 20 kg. More muscle mass comes with to much metabolic cost. It just costs far to much oxygen to paddle around in big surf with big muscles 🥷

Thanks Mark. Great as always. I recently started doing snatches recently (wouldn't have been comfortable to do this at heavy loads without your help learning cleans / clean and press / then shoulder mobility with clubs). I find that as the weight gets heavier (for me anyway), my heels start to come up on the hip snap. Is this something I should actively avoid? I find that it happens naturally and doesn't feel awkward.

Same. I'm pretty sure it's just physics. I'm not concerned about it. But, I might be completely wrong.
@cioran1754
@cioran1754 9 ай бұрын
Agree it's natural, for example a world class kettlebell instructor has the heel lifting ( more sports style ) for long sets, it exists. Always felt right for me, like a kick through the hip into the upward phase. I think in the same way Mark insists on the feet straight ahead for clubbell training ( for very good reason ), but with occasional nods to when this rule could / might get relaxed, you'd imagine the snatch ( hardstyle maybe ) could be trained by keeping the feet planted, but the aforementioned would suggest this wouldn't be sacrascant. That said, I'd wonder about an advisable approach when a complete novice, hardstyle versus softstyle, load, etc...

I've been doing a lot of kettlebells for well over 2 years, and what i can not get down with is inhaling at the bottom. I love the snatch, and my body wants to inhale on the pull and exhale on the way down. Same with swings (which i do not love...)
@richard18219
@richard18219 9 ай бұрын
Feet straight ahead sounds good, but now I have found the painful reason why my foot points out to the side, I discovered I have a hip impingement that now needs operating on, so check the nature of the joint before changing it

Holy crap, I think I get it now (only taken 2 years but whatever)... You always talk about how the KB goes "around" the wrist for cleans, snatches and related. It never dawned on me that we need to supinate the wrist; actively turn it outward on the "up" on these movements. F*** me. My wrists often getting hammered. Now I have something to focus on.
