I went from dumbbells to kettlebell back to dumbbells. I'm pushing 60, and I find that with dumbbells I'm less prone to injuries. Kettlebells are more technically complex than dumbbells. Most of my dumbbell routines involve complexes like varieties of man makers. Do I miss kettlebells? Yes! But dumbbells are very underrated, I think, especially as you enter the golden years when training injuries can have a more detrimental effect on our bodies and training. That's just my experience, your milage may vary.

DB's are awesome and very versatile (if you use adjustable plate loading DB's). KB are popular due to the marketing and myth of them.

Mark Wildman, thank you for clearing that up...the correct way to do a DB/KB Snatch. Gonna experiment with this tomorrow with using a 1 Gal. water jug in place of the 10lb kettleball I own.😊

Very great video. It will def. come in handy in the future. I'm still trying to perfect my form for the clean. Got the swings down pretty good to where I was doing 20 OTM for 10 minutes, so I switched to one handed swings...

Something about the dumbbell makes it feel more “squatty” (rather than “hingey”) even from a hang position. I also feel the dumbbell is better suited for athletically “catching” the weight like in olympic weightlifting (extending through the toes and then repositioning the feet for the catch)

why does it hurt my forearm when I hold the kettlebell?
@MR-yp7mu

My observation is that when I do dumbbell snatch or press I feel that stabilizers and wrist need to work harder because weight is higher (above my wrist) as opposed to the kettlebell when the weight is lower and more stable supported by forearm.

Which tool is better? My technique and strength is way better with a dumbbell (50lbs for reps) than a kettlebell (still working technique with 15-18lbs). Is it better to continue working on strength with DB snatch, while developing technique with the KB? Or totally focus on technique to develop strength with KB; don’t bother with DBs?

Could you talk about cross training kettlebells with other types of training, like bodybuilding or calisthenics
@delis4256
@delis4256 4 жыл бұрын
well I'll give my opinion based on my own research/study. which is you don't really cross train at the same time. It's better to switch them after you've done a protocol for an extended amount of time, be that weeks or months. Kettlebell training isn't really bodybuilding. They have different goals with different outcomes. Find your goals and do them Calisthenics, I find, I can do everyday basic pushups, pull-ups, and squats. I do them when I wake up even on days I work out. working out is taxing on the body on more levels then just the muscles. Recovery and diet are almost more important then lifting weights.

Of course, the kettlebell snatch will be different than the dumbbell if they are used differently. I do them with dumbbells and go slightly past straight overhead, to get the anterior activation.

Hell yeah.. an in-depth video on a beginners program would be great. I want to get all my information just from Mr. Wildman , because (with anything) if you use different KZbin sources, you'll find so much conflicting info and just wind up getting confused.

Depends. I'd not recommend going heavier than 24 kg for snatches, though. And unless you're very strong (I mean VERY strong), start lighter and get to know the movement.

I love your content in fact it has gotten me into clubbells now but the statement about the weight being being behind you with the kettlebell and not with dumbbells isn't true. Whenever you lift anything over your head no matter what it is you will naturally align the center of mass over the top of your shoulder. So even though the weight of the kettlebell is on the back of your wrist you will still line up the CoM with the structure of your shoulder. This same principle will apply with dumbells, barbells or any other thing you lift over head.

Good video! Just a point: The mechanics of dumbbell snatch that you showed in the video is nowhere near to the actual technique used in dumbbell snatches (specially the first 1-2 db snatches you showed in your video). Here's how a DB snatch should look like kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJaliqiqis2MjtU I am sure you must have noticed that it is significantly different from the DB snatch which you showed in the video. Your DB snatch is simply like a KB snatch however the actual DB snatch technique is very different from KB snatch. I agree with a lot of points you made in the video including the point that both are great exercises/movement, none is better than the other one, it's just a different movement.

It’s not black or white. Go look at a traditional barbell snatch. Your video is closer to that. For someone who doesn’t have access to kettlebells… like I don’t right now, Mark’s version is awesome.

Use adjustable plate loading DB's and you can load your front core...just have added weight on the back end when you lift the DB overhead. Not sure why none of these brainiac's couldn't figure this out? LOL
