Here is the full career of Monty Brown starting out in 2002 and going up to his retirement in ECW in 2007. The aim of this video is to find out it the internet narrative is correct, is this guy really the biggest missed opportunity in wrestling or is that wrong?
And don't forget plenty of Jeff Jarrett in this video!

Jarrett booked himself wayy too strong for years. People complain about Reign of Terror by HHH but Jarrett always beat anyone then gave the belt up for a few months. That is why TNA wasn't taken seriously. "The King of the Mountain" or "Planet Jarrett" were attempts at Ric Flair vibes as a dominant but cowardly heel, and it sucked.

True. I remember when I first started watching TNA I just couldn't stand JJ, and I've always loved cheering the heel, but I just couldn't get behind this guy. HHH's reign of terror is something I look back on and wish I could relive watching it for the first time. JJ just pisses me off.

Can’t fucking stand Jarrett. I wasn’t familiar with the phrase “punchable face” when i was a kid in this time period, but he sure does have one. Jarrett had like what? 4 or 6 reigns? Maybe only 2 of them didn’t go over 100 days. HHH’s reign of terror looks like nothing when compared to Jarrett’s reign of terror

Its stupid too. Just because Monty isn't ready to carry TNA yet doesn't mean he can't get elevated with a short title reign, which would give TNA a bigger star and give him experience as a world champion. Same with some of the other guys. It just stunts TNA's growth. And how would Jarrett know, he thinks nobody new is ready to carry TNA. The first world heavyweight title reigns for WWE are usually short because they know these guys can't carry the company but its good for developing them. The only guys JJ ever put over were midcarders from WWE (and I don't mean K-Kwik), AJ eventually after years of cutting him off at the knees and Sting.

I think Big E, oddly enough, is what Monty Brown could've been if he had the company build upon him and have him win the title. The disappointing thing about Monty Brown is I could see the Alpha Male gimmick working in literally any era other than the one he was in. The hangover from the Monday Night Wars was a period where every gimmick not about being a demon or a zombie had to just be "guy with a single exaggerated personality trait." But put his manic energy in the Hulkamania, New, Attitude, PG, or contemporary "eras" and I bet he'd have gone over gangbusters. Edit: Should have specified I meant his WWE run primarily, TNA was all down to Jarrett's golden shovel. Also damn, what a stand-up guy. Shame that kind of real life character isn't rewarded in wrestling.

The thing with Monty Brown is that it took some guidance from better hands for him to get everything fully together in the ring. Also, THAT loss wouldn't be as big of a deal if they played it off as Monty just ran out of steam because of what he had to do that night AND built it up to him taking the belt.

TNA had the chance to make a homegrown star with Monty, a guy with ability and charisma, and they blew it in favour of Jeff Jarrett's ego, then hiring a bunch of WWE guys to push instead. They were right on the cusp of making a new star and having him shine then they just decided to import stars instead because making them was too much work. WWE then set about doing what WWE does and removing what makes people special in order to have them pay their dues, or some other college locker room shit that gets in the way of developing talent. If not for what he did for his family he could well have eventually carved out a nice spot in WWE once he got past the paying dues stage. He had physicality and charisma and that would've served him well eventually. TNA dropped the ball, hard. WWE did their usual dumb shit of hamstringing a performer, but he might've eventually put a good run together.

Jarrett was only good in WWF as intercontinental mid card contender/champion. Jeff Jarrett was never big, I didn't even know Jeff Jarrett was wrestling after he left WWF. He was solid when I was a kid and I stopped watching after the attitude era in 2003. I used to appreciate Jeff Jarretts gimmick when he was a solid intercontinental contender heel. This was a missed opportunity for WWF in making the intercontinental belt a formidable title this leveling up the World champion belt. The WWE had all the solid contenders for intercontinental championship. Razor Ramon, Brett Hart, HBK, MR Perfect, Jeff Jarrett, Hardcore Harley etc. This would've put some weight onto the intercontinental belt and made it prestigious. Now it's a nothing belt lost in the anals of history

Monty Brown definitely had star potential, and even the "it" factor. I honestly think this can even be seen with the non-audio clips you show while narrating. His facials and body language ooze swag, and he just naturally feels like an alpha male in that old-school wrestling way. Most competitors these days should take notes. I should be able watch an interview or match on mute and still get an intimate sense of both the character you are and the story your telling. And that story should be told as much between the moves as it is told during the moves. Monty does that. Not to mention he looks like a million bucks too. Then after watching the with-sound clips, I think I realize which wrestlers he has elements of: The Rock, Big E and modern day Lashley. Combine that with a clear Severn influence in the ring with all those suplexes, as well as the training from Sabu, and I like the variety he brings to the ring. I should underscore that he was also a natural fit to have a move like The Pouncer as his finisher, given his natural explosiveness and football background. So, to count the score: he had the natural charisma of an alpha male, looked like a million bucks and was young with the upside to improve. Nothing here is telling me he wasn't main event material. Where exactly did it go wrong? We all know... and now a wild Slapnuts appears. You called the exact spot where his stardom was CONFIRMED. He either needed to win there or at the next PPV, because a guy doesn't look that good with the crowd support to boot, only for you to remove him from the title picture. That's purebred insanity, but we're talking Slapnuts here. Dude thought he was the main attraction, but history proves that to be incorrect. TNA goes farther with Brown as the face of the company than Jarrett. As for the idea he couldn't be champ or main event after all the WWE transfer came in, I firmly disagree. That actually provided a better chance to build a homegrown star. And let me be clear, I was wholly under the impression in real time that Brown was a star in TNA. In fact, when I was younger, I sincerely didn't like him simply because I was threatened by all the hype I was hearing about him in TNA. He came off a legit threat to WWE's hold on the industry. Meanwhile, neither my friends nor I could tell you much about Raven's or Rhyno's or even Abyss' doings in TNA. It was Brown that caught the eye and imagination. So put in him up against Rhyno and Christian Cage and Kurt Angle and Booker T. Let Brown, Samoa Joe, AJ Styles and Bobby Roode be your home grown stars, and let the WWE guys bring instant credibility that eventually gets transferred to the homegrown guys. I firmly believe that's how you get an emerging promotion over the top. Eventually when Brown came to WWE, I wanted to see "Marcus Cor Von" do well, only for him to never come back for reasons bigger than wrestling. My props to him for being such a selfless class act. P.S.: I'm going to be like the dorks in the old internet forums and give you a little correction in regards to the Super Bowl clip you showed. Brown actually played in Super Bowl XXVIII, but you showed Super Bowl XXVII. The same two teams played, so that can lead to the confusion. Also, a fun note: the football jersey he had in his TNA return was the second team he played for, which was the New England Patriots. Brown went on injured reserve the same year the Patriots earned a ticket to Super Bowl XXXI, so he nearly played in his second big game. Anywho, love the channel. Go smack somebody a new one.

I remember being a kid and only watching TNA sporadically as it wasn't on TV frequently nor consistently, like Raw or Smackdown (Portugal). But I do remember that other than the hexagonal shaped ring, the one thing that had us kids talking in school was Monty Brown and his absurdly brutal looking finisher hahaha it looked so stiff compared to a spear by Edge, who was our reference at the time... We thought he was awesome and were actually bummed that we couldn't catch TNA's programming more often and regularly. Thanks for your videos Hawk, I'm finally learning about this organisation's history and there's no lack of entertainment in the way you present your stuff. Rock on 🤘🏻

My cable company had TNA clips On Demand, which is my first exposure to TNA. I remember a few things, Ultimate X matches, Samoa Joe and Alpha Male Monty Brown. The guy looked like a star, he had the X factor. I got into watching the weekly show because all that was good to see. If Slap Nuts had let Monty have his moment I think we would be having a very different conversation. Sure he was green, and he was very much a big power move guy and not doing flippy shit, but ::insert list of names of other people like that who got over here::. There was a time where all my friends wanted nothing more than Monty to take out Slap Nuts. ::Edit:: Also, stepping up to raise his Sister's Children, hanging up his own dreams is seriously ALPHA.

No Doubt the most underrated Wrestler in my list. I was there watching TNA in 2004 and he was hot, and then all that heat went out when he became a member of Planet Jarret, which was completely lame. It didn't help much when he moved to WWECW and was treated as another face filling g up the roster. I still watch Brown's promos on occasion to remind myself how good he really was as a big man with top-notch Charisma.

He had the look, the mic skills and the athleticism to have been one of those guys like Joe and AJ when it came to guys you could build the company around. Plus his move set always looked like everything legitimately hurt his opponent. The pounce looked like it could puncture a damn lung with its impact. Real shame that he was never really taken a risk on and wasn’t trusted at the very top.

*Im so glad this video was made.* I really liked this guy back in the days and was so excited when I found out he would be in the SVR 2008 game, as well as featuring his pounce finisher. Its a shame that things just didn’t go the way they should have as I do recall researching his wikipedia page every so often each year in order to find out what he’s currently doing or if they had any plans to bring him back to WWE etc. Really wish it would have played out differently.

Attended some of the most noted moments on this video including both times he challenged Jarrett, him challenging at King of the Mountain at Slammiversary in 2005, the Hard Justice 2006 match, and his one Wrestlemania. He absolutely should have beaten Jarrett in 2005. Jarrett’s reign then was nothing short of brutal. On that Final Resolution show it also saw AMW win the tag titles in a vastly underrated match and AJ win the X title in the best Ultimate X match of all time. Having Monty win in the main event would have only been icing on the cake. Similarly, that Hard Justice match was one of the first steps in setting up Joe to win the world title which he should have at Bound For Glory that year until Russo came in and everything got screwed up.

Great video. I agree about Monty Brown being awesome. It’s a shame he didn’t get a chance by himself full fledged as the alpha male gimmick on raw or smack down. His promos where he got that gimmick over and impersonated his opponents were very entertaining. At the time WWE were pushing Bobby Lashley which you could cite as a reason for not pushing Monty. And granted, Lashley was bigger and also an incredible athlete, but Monty had such confidence and a great personality that I think he would have got over. That and the name of the move and his delivery of it in his promos was also very missed along with his proper name. Marcus Cor Von with jazz music… f*** off! Your Jeff Jarrett Tennessee accent was also as amazing as your Hawk Hogan!

Its funny you mentioned Lashley because to me Monty had what Lashley didn't at the time(mic skills, experience, flashy moves). They both really came along way but Monty did so faster in his limited time vs Lashley's slower peak half a decade later.

Honestly he had so much charisma but only needed a little more direction or someone to say "maybe don't do the whole cat licking itself thing" for his promos. Other than that Monty was fucking Money. Even him as a heel could've worked if he was a champ or the leader of a faction that was somewhere along the lines of the MEM except for up and comers. Such a missed opportunity and honestly with how wwe was doing at the time I'm surprised they didn't do shit with him

I started getting interested in tna pretty late, well kinda, about 2006/2007 I went to their website and looked at their roster seeing many familiar faces and some new guys, he stood out to me the most though, I immediately thought "money". Was always shocked that he just kind of ended, even looking back on him in wwecw I still think there was money there. Shows how you can think something is going to be a sure thing worth investing into but it just never comes close.

Monty is from my hometown. Met him in high school as he was involved in our schools football team. Motivational speeches and football drills. Super intense guy but more importantly a super nice guy…. unless you played in a high school rock band that practiced across the street from his house at 11 at night.….. I even got the chance to see one of his first matches one the indies. Him versus Dan Severn. Severn played heel and Monty face. Was a solid match. He won. I might be biased… no, I am biased.. but he could have been one of the greats if he was a shitty human being. But he’s a super wholesome family oriented guy. And I respect the hell out of that. Edited for spelling. Bridgeport education is bad umkay.

Great stuff to hear Josh!! That part about him being one of the greats if he was shittier is deep because thats a common pattern. Perhaps that's why the famous stay famous because their delusions make them complex which helps to reinvent themselves to get more money whereas those that are humble stay grounded which in the long term seems better. More money more problems(Suicide, drug addiction, jealousy, etc) vs less money/exposure equaling a faster way to solve them.

Some ECWWE fans liked the Alpha Male but the majority were behind C M Punk. So when he got overshadowed by Punk joining the New Breed the higher ups dropped his push and put Punk in the spotlight. And him using submission holds more was due to WWE wanting to make him a Lashley or Brock style badass shoot fighting monster heel.
Did this powerhouse wrester finally fulfil his potential?
