A major fail, KTLA %, millions of deafened and hard of hearing do not know and use sign language. Please add captions so all of us can understand what is being said here. This is especially relevant since "Deaf out loud" is supposed to highlight the diversity between those who have hearing loss. Of the 466 million people in the world with significant hearing loss, a vast majority do not use sign language. Thank you!

Shaylee Mansfield, who was in the Deaf Out Loud documentary, is now a budding young deaf actress! She was recently in Feel the Beat with Sofia Carson and guest starred on Bunk’d! Not to mention she’s the first person to ever have a sign over role in the cartoon series Madagascar: A Little Wild! I think it would be so cool and inspiring if Shaylee and Marlee acted/signed along side each other someday!

Why you have to emphasize her being deaf? You could have just said she was a budding young actress.

I’m HOH, wear hearing aids and use sign. No one in my family signs (wife, kids) because I can speak and can hear them when they come visit or we go out, but some places like the market, Costco, a busy mall or indoor venue and it’s quite confusing. I just watch what others do.

please no lateral ableism excluding certain segments of the deaf and HoH community by not providing captions in a video about a deaf subject is just waaaaaay sucky so captions please ffs
@fay-amieaspen60466 жыл бұрын
If this is sucky, then what about specifically buying a DVD box set of four films because one of them stars Marlee Matlin whom you admire as a person but also love as an Actress, only to find that there's no subtitles on the DVD, so not only can you not hear what's being said properly throughout the film, but her Signing isn't subtitled either, so non ASL users don't understand what she is communicating, this is especially true for me as I use BSL not ASL to communicate.
@TyrekeCorrea2 жыл бұрын
Hmm. Maybe they were just a little more focused on the fact that they were providing captions for the television broadcast of this segment. Acknowledgment and normalization of captioning videos on the internet simply has yet to kick in.

@@fay-amieaspen6046 ..Yeah,...CODA is like that,...so, either you know how to sign ASL, or tough luck. I wish the subtitles were "burned in".

I think sign language is very beautiful. I wished I could learn how to sign. I've never been much of a verbal speaker even though I can hear and speak just fine. I'm just the quiet type.

Jack Jason is interpreting everything she's signing and he is saying what she is signing except the part where they were talking about the shoes and he added his own sentence about the shoe Footwear that's the only time he spoke for himself the rest of the time he was signing with the news cast people were saying to her and he was saying what she was saying back to them
@kylemchargue35556 жыл бұрын
Actually Marlee made the joke about getting older and using the shoes and he voiced it. The only time he voiced for himself was when he said, “that joke never gets old.” When Marlee said “that is why I pay him.” And when he said his own thought he did Sim-com (simultaneous communication: signing and speaking at the same time so both parties know what is being said.) The only other time was when he was trying to get the attention back where it should be, back on Marlee!

How much of what people do in this documentary is done just because the camera is there? The dissonance in depiction which arises from that needs to be addressed, as well.

I guess I can see hypocrisy in they're being no captioning for a discussion about how deaf people communicate in many different ways, but don't forget that people who are supposed to be able to benefit from captions need to be able to read in order to do so.
